  • Anaerobic digestion(AD) is the most promising method of treating and recycling of different organic wastes, such as OFMSW, household wastes, animal manure, agro-industrial wastes, industrial organic wastes and sewage sludge. During AD, i.e. degradation in the absence of oxygen, organic material is decomposed by anaerobes forming degestates such as an excellent fertilizer and biogas, a mixture of carbon dioxide and methane. AD has been one of the leading technologies that can make a large contribution to producing renewable energy and to reducing $CO_2$ and other GHG emission, it is becoming a key method for both waste treatment and recovery of a renewable fuel and other valuable co-products. A classification of the basic AD technologies for the production of biogas can be made according to the dry matter of biowaste and digestion temperature, which divide the AD process in wet and dry, mesophilic and thermophilic. The biogas produced from AD plant can be utilized as an alternative energy source, for lighting and cooking in case of small-scale, for CHP and vehicle fuel or fuel in industrials in case of large-scale. This paper provides an overview of the status of biogas production and utilization technologies.

  • A study on the screening and isolation of microorganism was performed for the removal of main malodor, such as ammonia, produced from the livestock farm. The main malodor components in livestock farm are ammonia, volatile fatty acids, sulfur compounds and trimethylamine. Damages to man and livestock were originated from malodors mainly due to ammonia, and thus ammonia reduction experiments were performed. Sludge of sewage treatment plant was inoculated in the sesame dregs culture, from which ammonia gas was produced. An aerobically grown, pure cultured isolated from the 10th enrichment culture was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing and identified as Alcaligenes sp. NS-1. This strain NS-1 precultured in the sesame dregs was found to remove ammonia gas with an efficiency of approximately 99-100% at an average concentration of 40 ppmv of ammonia gas. When the strain NS-1 sprayed to pig excrements, the removal efficiency at an average concentration of 100 ppmv of ammonia was approximately 60% after 16 hr.

  • In this study, field experiment, odor simulator, and dispersion modeling were used to evaluate the odor impact from J sewage sludge treatment facility. The height and flow rate of exhaust stack at this facility were 22.3 m and $100Nm^3/min$. The mean odor concentrations of the wet scrubber inlet and exhaust stack were $267{\pm}160$ and $93{\pm}44OU/m^3$, respectively. The odor removal efficiency of wet scrubber showed 65%. The odor simulator is used for the regulated standard calculation of the exhaust pipe(stack). Resulting odor emission rate(OER) by odor simulator was $2.4{\times}10^6(24,000OU/m^3)$. The forecasting result by Screen3 modeling showed that odor exhaust concentration up to $30,000OU/m^3$ was't exceeded maximum allowable emission level on site boundary($15OU/m^3$).

  • Advanced Phase Isolation Ditch (APID) process was studied to develop economic retrofitting technology, for the plants where retrofitting of common activated sludge process is required. In this study, to develop and apply the modified intermittently aeration mode as process control conditions for treating municipal wastewater, a demonstration plant was installed and operated in the existing sewage treatment plant of P city. During this study, the average effluent $BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P concentrations were 6.3, 4.5, 10.0, and 1.3 mg/L. The modified mode decreased the nitrification capability more than the conventional mode in the application period. Nitrate in the anaerobic condition can have a negative effect on biological phosphorus removal. In the decreasing nitrate levels, the modified mode increased the biological ability of removal phosphorus more than the conventional mode in this study. Therefore, newly developed APID process with modified intermittent aeration mode can be one of the useful processes for stable organic matter and nutrients removal.

  • According to the in social aspects such as population growth, urbanization and industrialization, development of livestock industry by meat consumption, amount of organic wastes (containing sewage sludge and food waste, animal manure, etc) has been increased annually in South Korea. Precise monitoring of 11 organic wastes biogas facilities were conducted. The organic decomposition rate of organic wastewater was 68.2 % for food wastes, 66.8 % for animal manure and 46.2 % for sewage sludge and 58.8 % for total organic wastes. As a result of analyzing the biogas characteristics before and after the pretreatment, the total average of the whole facility was measured to be 560 ppm using iron salts and desulfurization, and decreased to 40 ppm when the reduction efficiency was above 90 %. Particularly, when iron salt is injected into the digester, the treatment efficiency is about 93 %, and the average is reduced to 150 ppm. In the case of dehumidification, the absolute humidity and the relative humidity were analyzed. The dew point temperature of the facility where the dehumidification facility was well maintained as $14^{\circ}C$, the absolute humidity was $12.6g/m^3$, and the relative humidity was 35 %. Therefore, it is necessary to compensate for the disadvantages of biogasification facilities of organic waste resources and optimize utilization of biogas and improve operation of facilities. This study was conducted to optimize biogas utilization of type of organic waste(containing sewage sludge and food waste, animal manure) through precision monitoring.

  • Deep sea water exists at depths of over 200m under the sea. As no sunlight reaches it, photosynthesis does not take place within it, and it contains no organic matter. In addition, its temperature is maintained at a stable low level throughout the year, so it does not get mixed with the sea water on the surface. It contains a large amount of nutritious salts, whose cleanness is maintained. It is a marine resource that has matured for a long period of time. Research into deep sea water, which started in the 1970s, has been made around the whole world, including the USA and Japan. In Korea, research has been active in this area since 2000. As there has been a good amount of research into industrial applications for deep sea water, since 1993, patents for the relevant technologies have been applied. This paper intends to provide a resource to researchers of deep sea water, by summarizing of all domestic deep sea water-related patents applied with Korean Intellectual Property Office from 1993 to 2008. This research was conducted using a computer and KIPRIS Database owned by the Korea Institute of Patent Information. 'Deep sea water' was used as the search keyword. A total of 222 Korean patents relating to deep sea water have been registered on the basis of IPC. Of these, 126 patents relate to the manufacturing and the treatment of foods, foodstuffs, or non-alcoholic beverages(A23L), while 50 patents relate to the production for medical, dental, or cosmetic purposes(A61K). 38 patents relate to water purification, treatment of wastewater, sewage and sludge (C02F), while 8 patents relate to fishery and farming(A01K). In summary, it was found that studies for the practical use of deep sea water have been conducted in relation to the manufacturing and the treatment of foods, foodstuffs, beverages, and cosmetics.

  • Currently an increase in domestic sewage and industrial wastewater causes serious water pollution in Korea. To solve water pollution problems, conventional activated sludge (CAS) system is generally used in wastewater treatment plant but this process is so ineffective in nitrogen and phosphorus. Even if CAS system is the major process, it must be improved instantly so as to remove nitrogen and phosphorus. Otherwise, the serious water pollution problems can't be resolved with CAS system. Therefore this study focused on the comparison of the treatment characteristics between ASA system and CAS system. And also the mass balance of each process of ASA system. The results from operating advanced step aeration (ASA) system indicated that the removal efficiency of BOD, COD, and SS was 89.9%, 74.5%, and 89.0% respectively. In comparison, the removal efficiency of BOD, COD, and SS for CAS system was 89.5%, 71.8%, and 89.5% respectively. In addition to the results, the TN removal efficiency of ASA system was 76.5% comparing to 32.7% of CAS system. It was concluded that the TN removal efficiency of ASA system was 44% higher than CAS system. And the TP removal efficiency was 81.4% in ASA system comparing to 25.2% in CAS system. It also means that over 56% of TP was removed in ASA system comparing to CAS system.

  • The objective of this study is to propose an alternative process for the small sewage treatment plants in rural communities. A biofilter has been used for biological wastewater treatment, which is becoming the alternative to the conventional activated sludge system. The proposed process used in this study, which is packed with floating media (i.e. expanded polystylene), has advantages of biofilter system and alternative flow system and they are incorporated into one process. Pilot and bench scale studies were performed using domestic wastewater. In the results of pilot plant study, it was observed that the stable effluent water quality was achieved and it met the present effluent criteria of suspended solid (SS), organic matters, T-N and T-P. In the study for determination of the cycle of backwashing, it was observed that the cycle of backwashing depended on BOD loading rates of influents. In the BOD loading rates of $0.5kg\;BOD/m^3{\cdot}day$ and $1.0kg\;BOD/m^3{\cdot}day$, the backwashing cycle of 28 hour and 16 hour were needed, respectively. The optimum backwashing time was 120~80 seconds at the media expansion rate of 50%. In the removal of SS, organic matters, T-N and T-P, SS removal was rather achieved by physical filtration than biological mechanism and the removal of organic matters except for SS, T-N and T-P were mainly rather achieved by biological mechanism than physical filtration. In bench-scale study, the effects of recirculation rate was investigated on removal of SS, TCOD, T-N and T-P. It was observed that the recirculation made removal efficiencies of SS, TCOD, T-N and T-P increased. Especially, in T-N removal, the increase of T-N removal efficiency of 40% was observed in the reicirculation rate of 1Q compared with 0Q.

  • Feasibility of simultaneous removal of organic materials and nitrogen in the wastewater from fisheries processing plant was evaluated using entrapped mixed microbial cell (EMMC) process. The experiment was performed using activated sludge from municipal sewage treatment plant which was immobilized with gel matrix by cellulose triacetate. It was found the stable operation at the treatment system which is composed of anoxic and oxic tank, was possible when the organic and nitrogen loading rates were increased stepwise. The organic and nitrogen loading rates were conducted from 0.65 to $1.72kgCOD/m^3/d$ and from 0.119 to $0.317kg\;T-N/m^3/d$ with four steps, respectively. The maximum nitrogen loading rate which could satisfy the regulated effluent standard of nitrogen concentration, was $0.3kg\;T-N/m^3/d$. The removal efficiency of total nitrogen was decreased apparently as increasing nitrogen loading rates, whereas the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen was effective at the all tested nitrogen loading rates. Therefore, it was concluded that nitrification was efficient at the system. Nitrate was removed efficiently at the anoxic tank. whereas the nitrification efficiency at the oxic tank ranged 94.0% to 96.9% at the tested loading rates. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and those of total nitrogen at the entire system ranged from 94.2% to 96.6% and 73.4% to 83.4%, respectively.
