Prediction of Tunnel Behavior Using Artificial Neural Network (터널거동 평가에서의 인공신경망 활용기법 연구)

  • This study investigated the applicability of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique for prediction of tunnel behavior. For training data collection, a series of finite element analyses were conducted for actual tunnel project site. Using the data, optimimzed ANNs were developed through a sensitivity study on internal parameters. The developed ANNs can make tunneling related predictions such as tunnel crown settlement, shotcrete lining stress, ground surface settlement, and groundwater inflow rate. The results indicated that the developed ANNs can be used as an effective and efficient tool for tunnelling related prediction in practical tunneling situations.

  • This study was performed to analyze the degree of consolidation by the dissipation of excessive pore water pressure and final settlement prediction methods of the very soft clay. Hyperbolic method, Asaoka method and curve fitting method were used to compute the degree of consolidation. The degree of consolidation with excessive pore water pressure were used to compute, which considered the dissipation time with embankment construction. The degree of consolidation that was obtained by the peak excessive pore water pressure was less than in the case of the dissipation excessive pore water pressure. And, the degree of consolidation by the total settlement was nearly the same value that of layer settlement. The degree of consolidation that was obtained by excessive pore water pressure was larger than in the case of the settlement.

Settlement analysis of viscoelastic foundation under vertical line load using a fractional Kelvin-Voigt model

  • Soil foundations exhibit significant creeping deformation, which may result in excessive settlement and failure of superstructures. Based on the theory of viscoelasticity and fractional calculus, a fractional Kelvin-Voigt model is proposed to account for the time-dependent behavior of soil foundation under vertical line load. Analytical solution of settlements in the foundation was derived using Laplace transforms. The influence of the model parameters on the time-dependent settlement is studied through a parametric study. Results indicate that the settlement-time relationship can be accurately captured by varying values of the fractional order of differential operator and the coefficient of viscosity. In comparison with the classical Kelvin-Voigt model, the fractional model can provide a more accurate prediction of long-term settlements of soil foundation. The determination of influential distance also affects the calculation of settlements.

Applicability of Settlement Prediction Methods to Selfweight Consolidated Ground (자중압밀지반에 대한 침하예측기법의 적용성)

  • Applicability of existing methods of predicting consolidation settlement was assessed by analyzing results of centrifuge tests modelling self-weight consolidation of soft marine clay. From extensive literature review about self-weight consolidation of soft marine clays located in southern coast in Korea, constitutive relationships of void ratio-effective stress-permeability and typical self-weight consolidation curves with time were obtained by centrifuge model experiments. For the condition of surcharge loading, exact solution of consolidation settlement curve was obtained by Terzaghi's consolidation theory and was compared with the results predicted by currently available methods such as Hyperbolic method, Asaoka's method, Hoshino's method and ${\sqrt{S}}$ method. All methods were found to have their own inherent error to predict final consolidation settlement. From results of analyzing the self-weight consolidation with time by using those methods, Asaoka's method predicted the best. Hyperbolic method predicted relatively well in error range of 2~24% for the case of showing the linearity in the relationship between T vs T/S in the stage of consolidation degree of 60~90 %. For the case of relation curve of T vs $T/S^2$ showing the lineality after the middle stage, error range from Hoshino method was close to those from Hyperbolic method. However, Hoshino method is not able to predict the final settlement in the case of relation curve of T vs $T/S^2$ being horizontal. For the given data about self-weight consolidation after the middle stage, relation curve of T vs T/S from ${\sqrt{S}}$ method shows the better linearity than that of T vs $T/{\sqrt{s}}$ from Hyperbolic method.

Consolidation Settlement of Capped Sediment (II): Advective Transport of Pore Water and Analytical Prediction of Settlement (캡이 설치된 퇴적층의 압밀 침하 (II): 간극수의 이동 및 침하의 해석적 예측)

  • Centrifuge test was conducted to simulate the effects of consolidation settlement of capped contaminated marine sediment. A fluorescent dye was used to monitor the movement of pore water through the cap layer. Dye tracer study clearly showed the consolidation induced advective transport of contaminants. Thus, the capping layer must be appropriately designed to reduce the effects of consolidation induced advective transport. The results from the centrifuge test were compared to predictions made by the Primary consolidation, Secondary compression, and Desiccation of Dredged Fill (PSDDF) computer program, which can qualitatively estimate the consolidation settlement of capped marine sediment. Although PSDDF approximated closely the secondary compression in the centrifuge test (i.e., compare data points from 18 to 25 prototype years), the maximum deviation between centrifuge test result and PSDDF prediction was 20 % about prototype time 6 years. Thus, designers should utilize PSDDF consolidation settlement results with caution.

  • The railway concrete track has been increasingly adopted for high-speed train such as KTX due to its high running stability, improved ride quality for the passengers, and low maintenance cost. However, excessive settlement of the railway concrete track has been monitored at embankment sections of the ◯◯ High-speed Line, resulting in the concerns on the safety of railway operation. In order to establish an effective maintenance plan for the concrete track railway exceeding the allowable residual settlement, it is essential to reasonably predict their long-term settlement behavior during the public period. In this study, we developed a model for predicting the long-term settlement behavior of concrete track using recurrent neural network (RNN) and examined the applicability of the developed model.

The prediction of deformation according to tunnel excavation in weathered granite (화강 풍화암지반의 터널굴착에 따른 변형예측)

  • Mechanical behavior of underground cavity construction such as tunnel is very difficult to estimate due to complexity and uncertainty of ground. Prediction of behavior according to excavation of tunnel mainly uses method utilized of model test or numerical analysis. But scale model test is difficult to reappear field condition, numerical analysis is also very hard to seek choice of suitable constituent model and input data. To solve this problem, this paper forecasted the deformation of tunnel that applied to information of crown settlement and convergence, RMR in weathered granite by using the regression analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the crown settlement according to excavation occurs approximately 70~80% of total displacements within about 20 days. As a result of the prediction of crown settlement and convergence, an exponential function becomes more accurate at measurements than an algebraic function. Also this paper got a correlation in comparison of RMR and displacements of 6 sections.

  • In this case of study, Incheon International Airport 2nd phase site preparation 1st section estimated final settlement to improve soft ground. Final settlement is very important in preloading method. Recently, Hyperbolic method, Hoshino method and Asaoka method are used mostly in prediction of final settlement and this paper, Comparing a result of Final settlement, used to Artificial Neural Network. The structure of Dynamic Artificial Neural Network which predicted Final settlement, has application to Young_Jong Island other site, If new investigation data will be added. Also, It is expected to save measuring_system cost in soft ground.

  • In this study, we intended to compare and examine several settlement management methods by analyzing measurement results of a site of the industrial complex at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ province. We predicted and analyzed the amount of final settlement by using generally used final settlement methods as like Hyperbola method, Hoshino methods and Asaoka method. And then, We compared the predicted results with that of measurement. On the basis of comparison of the three methods, Hyperbola method was the most convenient and accurate method of the three methods and if a sufficient time was given enough after embankment construction, the use of Hoshino method was possible. In the case of the Asaoka methods, it was possible to know that it had an approaching tendency to the measured one with increasing time interval spent on analysis. Therefore, in order to predict settlement behavior more accurately it is needed to understand their advantages and shortcomings sufficiently and pay attention to application to the real site.

  • A database program is constructed by collecting all information related to shallow foundations such as measured load-settlement data, foundation shapes and sizes, properties of soils under the foundation and various measured data obtained from field investigation methods including CPT, PMT and SPT etc.. Based on the database program, a special program module is developed for performing statistical analyses of reliability and accuracy of predicting equations used for calculation of settlement of the shallow foundations. Special interests are focused not only on the settlement, but also on the settlement to width ratio (s/B). Results of the reliability and accuracy analyses on five available settlement equations are provided. Conclusions based on the provided results can be confirmed by extending number of related reliable data about the shallow foundations and can be adapted as guidelines for design of the shallow foundations.
