Polychaete Feeding Guilds from the Continental Shelf Off the Southeastern Coast of Korea (한국(韓國) 동남해역(東南海域)에 분포(分布)하는 다모류(多毛類)의 식이조합(食餌組合))

  • The feeding guild classification proposed by Fauchald and Jumars (1979) and the relationship between this guild structure and the habitat environment were examined based on the quantitative polycheate samples collected on the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of Korea. Total 12 feeding guilds were found and the major feeding guilds of polychaetes were BSX (burrowing, sessile, non-jawed), SDT (surface deposit feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate), SST (surface deposit feeding, sessile, tentaculate), BMX (burrowing, motile, non-jawed), BMJ (burrowing, motile, jawed), SDJ (surface deposit feeding, discretely motile, jawed). There were more significant associations between feeding guilds and mean grain size (${\phi}$); SST and BMJ showed a positive correlation with mean phi, whereas CDJ (carnivore, discretely motile, jawed) and FDT (filter feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate), a negative value. The CDJ and CMX (carnivore, motile, non-jawed) guilds showed positive correlations with sand content, but only SST guild showed a positive correlation with clay. The heterogeneity of sediment or sorting value (${\phi}$) was highly associated with various feeding strategies of polychaetes. Surface deposit feeders and filter feeders, sessile, and tentaculate strategies were associated with poorly sorted or heterogeneous sediments. Some preliminary polychaete feeding surfaces were posed. Southern and northern coastal region composed of muddy sediment were characterized by SDJ; northern slope of mud by SST; central coast of mud by SDT, BSX; and BMX; southern offshore of sandy sediment by SDJ and IDT (interface feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate).

Surface roughness and surface free energy components of various orthodontic adhesives (다양한 교정용 접착제의 표면거칠기와 표면에너지 요소 분석)

  • Objective: Surface characteristics of dental materials play an important role in bacterial adhesion. The purpose of this study was to investigate surface characteristics of 5 different light-cured orthodontic adhesives (1 fluoride-releasing composite, 3 non-fluoride-releasing composites, and f resin-modified glass ionomer). Methods: Surface roughness was measured using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Contact angle and surface free energy components were analyzed using the sessile drop method. Results: Surface roughness was significantly different between adhesives despite a relatively small variation (less than $0.05\;{\mu}m$). Lightbond and Monolok2 were rougher than Enlight and Transbond XT. There were also significant differences in contact angles and surface free energy components between adhesives. In particular, considerable differences in contact angles and surface free energy components were found between resin modified glass ionomer and the composites. Resin modified glass ionomer showed significantly smaller contact angles in 3 different probe liquids and had higher total surface free energy and stronger polarity, with notably stronger basic property than the composites. Conclusion: Resin modified glass ionomer may provide a more favourable environment for bacterial adhesion than composite adhesives.

Wettability of titanium implants depending upon surface properties (타이타늄 표면 처리 특성에 따른 젖음성에 관한 연구)

  • Statement of problem: When an implant is fixed, a fixture comes into contact with a tissue fluid. Adhesion of a tissue fluid to a surface of implant is various case by case. Purpose: The ultimate goal of this work is to analyze a correlation between a surface roughness and wettability of implant specimens. A measurement for wettability is performed considering 4 types of specimen implant with surface treatments different from each other to investigate the change of wettability with the elapse of time. Material and methods: Firstly, 20 specimens of titanium were prepared. The specimen were made of a commercial Titanium Grade IV with the diameter of 10 mm and the thickness of 1 mm. According to the method of surface treatment, the specimens were classified into 4 groups of 5 specimens per group. Group A: Machined Surface Group B: Anodized surface Group C: RBM (HA blasting) surface Group D: CMP (calcium methaphosphate) coating surface. Surface roughness of specimen was measured using SV-3000S4 (Mituyoto, Japan). The measurement was based on the standard of JIS1994. Sessile drop method was used to measure the wettability, which measures contact angle between implant disc and saline with the time interval of 5, 10, and 15 seconds. SPSS 11.0 was used to analyze the collected data. In order to analyze the difference of wettability and surface roughness according to implant surface treatment method. The statistical significance was tested with the confidence level of 95%. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the correlation of surface roughness and wettability. Results: The difference of surface roughness was statistically significant in the order of Group C ($1.69{\pm}0.26$), Group D ($1.58{\pm}0.16$), Group B ($0.78{\pm}0.14$) Group A ($0.18{\pm}0.05$). The wettability has also a statistically significant difference, which was in the order of group B ($17.70{\pm}2.66$), Group C ($27.86{\pm}4.52$), Group D ($66.28{\pm}3.70$) Group A ($70.52{\pm}8.00$). There was no difference in wettability with the passage of time. Conclusions: 1. The surface roughness was high in the order of RBM, CMP, Anodized, Machined group (P<.05). 2. The wettability was high in the order of Anodized, RBM, CMP, Machined group (P<.05). 3. There was no statistical significance in the correlation of surface roughness and wettability.

FOCAL EPITHELIAL HYPERPLASIA : A CASE REPORT (Focal epithelial hyperplasia : 증례보고)

  • Focal epithelial hyperplasia(FEH) is Human papilloma virus - induced, localized proliferation of oral squamous epithelium. FEH usually occurs in the childhood, but occasionally affects the young and middle-aged adults. Sites of the greatest involvement include the labial, buccal and lingual mucosa, but lesions of gingiva or tongue have also been reported. This disease is typically characterized by multiple soft, non-tender flattened papules and plaques. Occasional lesions show a slight papillary surface change. Individual lesions are small, discrete and well demarcated. The histopathologic hallmark of FEH is acanthosis of the oral epithelium. Cells demonstrating viral cytopathic changes including koilocytes or mitosoid cells may be present. The 5-year-old female of this case visited Department of Pediatric Dentistry, College of Dentistry, Yonsei University with a chief complaint of exophytic lesions on gingiva. Sessile papillary papules were detected by clinical examination on buccal gingiva at the maxillary left and right second deciduous molars. The patient did not complain of pain by palpation. An excisional biopsy was carried out for a histological examination and acanthosis was observed. The lesions were diagnosed as FEH. FEH would regress spontaneously after several months or years. Conservative excision may be performed for diagnostic or esthetic purpose. The risk of recurrence after this therapy is minimal, and there is no malignant transformation.

Experimental Study on Coffee-ring Effect of Silver Nanowire with Different Parameters (은 나노와이어 특성에 따른 커피 링 현상에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • A coffee-ring effect is from capillary flow by different evaporation rate across the droplet. The capillary flow tends particles to accumulate at the edges of the droplet and makes the ring-shaped stain pattern. These coffee-ring formation and suppression of coffee-ring have been a critical role in printing and coating technologies. In this study, we present the experimental study on coffee-ring effect of silver nanowire inside the evaporating sessile droplet. Size and concentration effect of nanowires at coffee-ring effect has been investigated. From the coffee-ring, we observed the regimes of connected rings and disconnected ones and measure the resistivity of single ring pattern with different nanowire length.

  • Sessile drop studies of molten Al on single crystal sapphire substrate were conducted to understand the wetting behavior and interfacial reaction at Al/Al2O3 interface. To investigate the wetting mechanism, the variation in contact angle was determined with time. The contact angle obtained in this study decreased exponentially with time. This result means that the driving force for wetting is the reduction in interfacial energy between liquid Al and sapphire caused by the interfacial reaction. The closer examination revealed that the reaction was the dissolution of sapphire by molten Al. Ti has been frequently used to improve wetting on ceramic materials. Therefore, the influence of Ti content on the wetting behaviour was investigated in this work. The equilibrium wetting angles of pure Al, Al-0.3 wt%Ti, and Al-1.0 wt%Ti at 100$0^{\circ}C$ were 63$^{\circ}$, 59$^{\circ}$, and 54$^{\circ}$respectively. The difference is considered as the result of the change in interfacial energy caused by the reaction between Ti and sapphire and the interfacial reaction formed the reaction products of varying stoichiometry (TiO, Ti2O3, TiO2 etc.).

  • Plants have evolved a vast chemical cornucopia to support their sessile lifestyles. Man has exploited this natural resource since Neolithic times and currently plant-derived chemicals are exploited for a myriad of applications. However, plant sources of most high-value natural products (NPs) are not domesticated and therefore their production cannot be undertaken on an agricultural scale. Further, these plant species are often slow growing, their populations limiting, the concentration of the target molecule highly variable and routinely present at extremely low concentrations. Plant cell and organ culture constitutes a sustainable, controllable and environmentally friendly tool for the industrial production of plant NPs. Further, advances in cell line selection, biotransformation, product secretion, cell permeabilisation, extraction and scale-up, among others, are driving increases in plant NP yields. However, there remain significant obstacles to the commercial synthesis of high-value chemicals from these sources. The relatively recent isolation, culturing and characterisation of cambial meristematic cells (CMCs), provides an emerging platform to circumvent many of these potential difficulties.

Four Cases of Primary Malignant Melanoma of the Nasal Cavity (비강에 발생한 원발성 악성흑생종 4례)

  • The primary malignat melanoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is extemely rare and accounts for only between 0.6 and 2.5% of the total 'number of malignat melanoma at all sites. In the nose, the left side is involved in 60% of cases and the most frequent site is the septum followed by the inferior and middle turbinates. In the sinuses, the maxillary sinus is the site of origin in 80% of cases, followed by ethmoid sinus. The tumors are sessile or polypoid, with variable color such as pink. white, brown or black. Of all tumors, 10~30% are amelanotic, requiring special stains for melanin. When primary site of melanoma is mucosal origin. treatment of primary lesion is often hampered by anatomic retrictions and large size, which results from the delayed diagnosis caused by their location. We report 4 cases of primary malignant melanoma of nasal cavity with review of literature.

  • Physico-chemical changes of the plasma modified titanium alloy [Ti-6Al-4V] surface were studied with respect to their crystallographic changes by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).The plasma-treatment of surface was carried out to enhance adhesion of high performance nano reinforced epoxy adhesive, a phenomenon that was manifested in subsequent experimental results. The enhancement of adhesion as a consequence of improved spreading and wetting on metal surface was studied by contact angle (sessile drop method) and surface energy determination, which shows a distinct increase in polar component of surface energy. The synergism in bond strength was established by analyzing the lap-shear strength of titanium laminate. The extent of enhancement in thermal stability of the dispersed nanosilica particles reinforced epoxy adhesive was studied by Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), which shows an increase in onset of degradation and high amount of residuals at the high temperature range under study. The fractured surfaces of the joint were examined by Scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Laser Copper Patterning by wettability improvement of Silicon (레이저에 의한 실리콘 표면의 습윤성 향상과 구리 패터닝)

  • In this paper, we have studied with regard to the use of lasers for modifying the surface properties of silicon in order to improve it's wettability and adhesion characteristics. Using an Nd:YAG pulse laser, the wettability and adhesion characteristics of silicon surface have been developed by an Nd:YAG pulse laser. It was found that the laser treatment of silicon surfaces modified the surface energy. In the result of wetting experiments, by the sessile drop technique using the distilled water, wetting characteristic of silicon after the laser irradiation shows a decreased value of the contact angle. In case of the laser treated silicon surface, laser direct writing of copper lines has been achieved by pyrolytic decomposition of copper formate films$(Cu(HCOO)_2{\cdot}4H_2Q)$, using a focused $Ar^+$ laser beam$(\lambda=514.5nm)$ on the silicon substrates. The deposited patterns were measured by energy dispersive X-ray(EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and surface profiler($\alpha$-step) to examine the cross section of deposited copper lines and linewidth.
