  • The waiting time of patients is an important factor related with service quality of a hospital system. An appointment system of patients is not popular, in special, in a private hospital. An appointment system is expected to diversify patients in time and to reduce patient's waiting time. Three appointment rules are suggested and analyzed to compare the waiting time of appointment and walk-in patients using simulation analysis. The results of two way ANOVA show that the time slot of 30 minutes for allocating appointment patients is better than the time slot of 60 minites in view of patient's waiting time. The results of the appointment level 1 also show that the constant pattern rule and the zigzag pattern rule give shorter waiting time for walk-in patient and for appointment patient, respectively.

  • In this study, we consider stationary waiting times in a simple fork-and-join type queue which consists of three single-server machines, Machine 1, Machine 2, and Assembly Machine. We assume that the queue has a renewal arrival process and that independent service times at each node are either deterministic or non-overlapping. We also assume that the Machines 1 and 2 have an infinite buffer capacity whereas the Assembly Machine has two finite buffers, one for each machine. Services at each machine are given by FIFO service discipline and a communication blocking policy. We derive the explicit expressions for stationary waiting times at all nodes as a function of finite buffer capacities by using (max,+)-algebra. Various characteristics of stationary waiting times such as mean, higher moments, and tail probability can be computed from these expressions.

  • Two experiments were conducted to verify how the factors of attentional dispersion, reason for waiting, and cue of time flow affect the perceived waiting time. In experiment 1, based on the characteristics of waiting experience that Maister(1985) suggested, levels of attentional dispersion and whether or not offering a reason for waiting were manipulated. Participants estimated elapsed time(the objective time was 10 minutes) using either prospective or retrospective estimation method. Overall results were that they overestimated the elapsed time regardless of the experimental conditions. However, both main effects of the attentional dispersion and the reason for waiting were statistically significant. That is, when attention was more dispersed and when the reason was given, overestimation of elapsed time was reduced. No difference was found between the two estimation methods, and none of the interaction was significant. Experiment 2 was a replication of Experiment 1 except that a cue of time flow was added by using scroll bar on a computer screen. Because it has been suggested that the cue can help us to manage the waiting time and result in differences between the two time estimation methods. The results showed that main effects of the attentional dispersion and the reason for waiting were significant as those in Experiment 1. In addition, main effect of time estimation method and the three-way interaction were also significant. None of two-way interaction was significant. That is, the perceived waiting time is much shorter in the retrospective method, and the effects of the attentional dispersion and the reason of waiting were dependent upon the estimation methods. Both experiments showed that offering a clear reason for waiting is more important than the attentional dispersion in reducing the perceived waiting time. Some implications of these results for the service industry and the future direction of research were discussed in the final section.

  • It is widely agreed that customers' purchase are strongly influenced by their emotions. despite the obvious importance of eliciting positive emotional responses from customers, we find no record that family restaurants have ever measured or used customers' emotions as a management tool. This study aimed to verify the importance of the customers' emotion in the relational performance of family restaurant business. In order to achieve the object of the study, the effect of emotional factors on service satisfaction, revisit, word-of-mouth were analysed. The data were collected from 450 customers who had visited five family restaurants in Seoul more than once during the last three months from September 20 to October 5, 2002. Emotional variables in service experience process were grouped as three factors; in the middle of having food, in entering and leaving restaurant and in the waiting line. It is proved that customers had different emotions in each process of family restaurant service experience. Multiple regression analysis was employed to explore the influence of three emotional factors on relational performances such as satisfaction, revisit and word-of-mouth. It was found that customers were influenced by emotional factors in entering and leaving restaurant, secondly influenced in the waiting line and least influenced in the middle of having food. Finally, the findings indicated that customers' emotional factors in whole service experience process from entering to leaving the restaurant should be successfully cared by service staff. Future research is recommended to find out which specific emotional factors affected on relational performance of family restaurant.

  • Web services provide the possibility of dynamically integrating distributed service components scattered over the Internet to fulfill sophisticated business demands. However due to today's wide variety of services offered to perform a specific task, it's essential that users are supported in the eventual selection of appropriate services. An example of web services for which selection of appropriate services will be crucial is Auto Repair Services. Selecting proper service from a variety of Auto Part Shops would be result of delivering high-quality service and minimizing Auto Repair Service customer's waiting time. Therefore, in this research to assist selecting proper service, we present Functional-Level Mediator and illustrate its usage in matching customer's and web service's goals. Five matching cases have been analyzed and results from experiment have been shown. Also, taking advantage of implementing multithreaded web services which reflects concurrent activity in the real world more naturally, we have significantly minimized customer's waiting time at Auto Repair Service.

  • To realize the wireless packet scheduler which efficiently considers both the effect of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme due to variable wireless communication channel information from physical layer and the QoS differentiation of multimedia services from internet protocol (IP) layer, this paper proposes a new downlink AMC-based priority queuing (APQ) scheduler which combines AMC scheme and service priority method in multimedia services at the same time. The result of numerical analysis shows that the proposed APQ algorithm plays a role in increasing the number of services satisfying the mean waiting time requirements per each service in multimedia services because the APQ scheme allows the mean waiting time of each service to be reduced much more than existing packet scheduler having only user selection processor.

  • This study analyzed the electric vehicle recharging station status with recharging time limitation due to long waiting time, and figured out the user status by user interviews. And then this study verified the validity of hypothesis in terms of environmental design perspective and suggested layout of recharging station model. 21 recharging stations in Korea and station operation cases of 7 countries were examined. Except for the USA, the reality of electric vehicle recharging station today is the 1st proving stage focusing on the infrastructure construction of electric vehicle recharging station. It focuses on performance of recharging facility, use efficiency and operation environment of electric vehicle. About the effective waiting time of the user to use it should be studied. The current conditions of recharging station are as follows: Lack of independent recharging space, lack of facility that reduces external effect of recharging space, and lack of lounge for users during the waiting time. These three are essential factors constructing a suggesting model after basic layout, which needs proper measurement on the long recharging time and long waiting time. The essential factors are applied to electric vehicle recharging station layout so that users might use 'digital refresh" i.e. lounge and information contents service during the waiting time which provides convenience of recharging and emotional space with users. Such upgrade recharging station environmental model might resolve the burden of long recharging time which may contribute to the popularization of electric vehicles.
