  • For the purpose of profound comprehension of the Current education of Oriental medical classics in Korea, I investigated the results of direct survey of the Current education of Oriental medical classics from each professor, and came to following conclusions. 1. The education of Oriental medical classics mainly lasts for 2 years. Students have average 6.59 hours of lecture every week. The rate of full service professor reaches 74.4%. But the department of Oriental medical classics in every college takes charge of many subjects which are related to Oriental medical classics, so the appointment of large number of full service professor is essential for the improvement of educational environment of Oriental medical classics. 2. After the publishing of the common textbook of Oriental medical classics, it gradually became the main textbook. But it is necessary that we should complement the textbook and it is also necessary that we should develop another textbook for Nangyeong(難經). 3. Most professors emphasize on the cultivation of the ability which enables Oriental medical thought through precise comprehension of original text. By the way, for the purpose of motivation of studying Oriental medical classics, it is necessary to develop a lecture which is related to clinical medicine. From the same context it is also necessary to read clinical original text such as Dongui-bogam(東醫寶鑑) and Uihakimmun(醫學入門) in class.

  • In spite of the development of scientific and medical technology, the rate of prevalence and death of the chronic disease gets higher. Therefore people come to know prevention is more important than treatment in disease. In Western, it is nearly after 1970's when it is revealed that the major factor of chronic disease comes from habitual behaviors in everyday life. But that is common idea in Oriental Medicine since thousand years. In Oriental Medicine, the main cause of disease is composed of natural factor including climate condition, living-life factor, psycho-social factor, constitutional factor, inbody-pathologic-substance factor, and other factors including habits of using drug and medical service, injury, environmental pollutions, and occupational etiologic factors. Among these, the major factors of disease in modern society are lifestyle factors like the tendency of choosing and intaking food, the level of physical activity and labor, smoking and drinking alcohol, psychological tendency, the habits of using drug and medical service and so on. This is a practical aspect of oriental medicine where the most important etiologic factor comes from human behaviors, not from external factors like germ or virus. So that etiology in Oriental Medicine where improvement in the way of life is needed to prevent disease would play an important role in modern society.

  • This study is on Yoshimasu Todo's thoughts of a real doctor and medicine. Conclusions are as below. disease-doctor[疾醫] is a doctor treating diseases by poisonous medicines. His role is different from food-doctor[食醫] who recuperates vital energy by food. Unlike food-doctor, a disease-doctor only detoxicates poisons of diseases by using poisonous medicines. Disease-doctor shall not take credit upon himself for the service of Heaven' s power. This is Yoshimasu Todo's view of a real doctor. Medicine is not an imagination, but a reality. It is the recognition of knowing what can be known and seeing what can be seen The truth of medicine is in ancient words(古語), ancient teachings[古訓] and ancient ways[古法]. To study medicine is not recklessly believing and following the contents of ancient medical texts-${\ulcorner}$Sanghanlon(傷寒論)${\lrcorner}$, ${\ulcorner}$Geumgwe-yolyag(金置要略)${\lrcorner}$,${\ulcorner}$Somun(素問)${\lrcorner}$, ${\ulcorner}$Yeongchu(靈樞)${\lrcorner}$. It is to follow the ancient ways written and left in ancient books and not to follow wrong ways fabricated by after ages. The theories of eum-yang-obaeng(陰陽五行) and o-un-yuggi(五運六氣) are useless to medicine because these are groudless ones. This is Yoshimasu Todo's view of medicine.

  • Objectives : Traditional Korean Emergency Medicine (EM) has been developing for thousands of years, however its value was not properly considered after 19th century modernization. The purpose of this study was to review the current status of EM in Korean Medicine and suggest methods for improvement. Methods : We performed systematic reviews of the definition, current medical system, and educational curriculum of EM in Western Medicine, traditional Korean and Chinese Medicine, and integrated Western and traditional Chinese medicine with the use of medical classics and text books. We also analyzed the trends in published research articles to discuss the current situation in the field of traditional Korean EM, and to provide methods for its establishment and development with traditional Korean medicine. Results : The definition of EM as a treatment of acute disease shares common understanding among traditional Korean, Chinese, and Western medicine. We presented descriptions of EM in many medical classics, however current law and EM service does not include these. As for the review of publications during the last 20 years, we found 21 articles in several fields that confirmed the need for more investigation. Conclusion : Traditional Korean EM has a long history and clinical experiences that can be found in medical classics, textbooks and research articles. There is an urgent need for more studies on traditional Korean EM as an emergency medical service system, and in terms of educational curriculum and related policies to improve Evidence-Based teaching.

  • Objectives : This paper analyze several version of Danbangshinpyon(單方新編), a simple medical book that was widely used in the private sector from late Joseon dynasty to Japanese colonial period in Korea. Since it had not only collected the treatments easy to get around but also translated the classical Chinese into Korean, Danbangshinpyon(單方新編) was popular in the environment of poor medical service for the people. Methods : We compared several types of issue having heen popular either in the form of plate printing or as manuscripts until recently. Enlarged edition of Danbangshinpyon(增補單方新編) was edited in 1913, and it had been published a total of 13 times until 1922 with 8th edition. On the other hand, it is regarded that the contents of which are again included into Shinpyonmyobang(新篇妙方) published in 1938. Results : Danbangshinpyon was edited to match the demand for medical care at the time in 1909 on the basis of previously existing Gyungheombang(經驗方) of that time. Taking advantage of the public popularity of Danbangshinpyon, Enlarged edition of Danbangshinpyon was hurriedly constructed with weak consideration of upgrading the content. Shinpyonmyobang(新篇妙方) contains the whole content of Danbangshinpyon(單方新編) in the second half of it. Surveying details in the Shinpyonmyobang, one can find that it had been edited to copytext Enlarged edition of Danbang-shinpyon rather than Danbangshinpyon(單方新編). In other words, it is presumed to have been re-edited after the publication of Enlarged edition of Danbangshinpyon.
