  • It is widely believed that increasing socio-economic polarization inspired by globalization and economic restructuring worsens residential segregation by class in Korean cities. However, the existing literature falls short in showing the recent changes of the residential segregation, particularly after the 1997 financial crisis, with reliable and systematic segregation measures. Noting that there are the two major dimension in residential segregation - evenness-concentration and exposure-clustering - this study introduced not only global measure (dissimilarity index and isolation/interaction index) but also local measures (location quotient and Local Moran's I) for each dimension. These measures are applied to the case study of Seoul in the 2000s. The class is defined by education attainment and the data is obtain through the MicroData System Service System(MDSS). The result shows that the residential segregation by education attainment persists through 2000s and even get worse in some dimension. More significantly, it turns out that high-class and low-class residence are nearly mirror-images of each other, indicating high segregation.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the predictors of health promoting lifestyles(Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile HPLP) of Koreans in the Philippines. The sample consisted of 100 Koreans who have lived in Manila, Philippines. Data were collected for two months from Feb, 1 to March 30, 1998. Analysis of the data was done by use of percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. The range of total HPLP score was from 73 to 175 and the mean score of that was 117.23. In comparison of mean scores depending on each item of six dimensions, self-actualization dimension tended to show the hightest score(2.98) and responsibility for health dimension, the lowest score(1.83). 2. The HPLP score showed a positive correlation with age(r=.19), social support (r=.39), self-efficacy(r=.52) and perceived health status(r=.27), but a inverse correlation with perceived health care service utilization barriers(r=-.20). 3. By using stepwise multiple regression analysis it was determined that the main influencing factors on the HPLP score were self-efficacy(27.2%), social support(5.3%), age(5.3%) and perceived health status(2.9%). These variables made it possible to explain 40.7% of variance in HPLP score.

  • The aim of the research is to find out the direction of unit-plans in multi-dwellings for the future society. Shinonome Canal Court where residents actually live now are the objects in this study, and the residential floor plan of unit-plans were analyzed to find out the typical types. The analysis was focused on the unit-plans of 5 blocks of Shinonome Canal Court. Space Syntax Theory was used as the analysis method. As the first stage of the analysis, justified graphs were made to find out the characters of unit-plans through the classification of the graphs. Contents of the analysis are as follows: Relationship between classified justified graphs and dimension according to node number. Relationship between classified justified graph patterns and unit-plans. Characters of unit-plans in each blocks. Shinonome Canal Court consists of mainly small scale unit-plans and 30unit-plans are classified. 1LDK, 2LDK, 1LDK+S, 1LDK+f are typical unit-plans which are mainly supplied in the complex. It is noted that the results of the analysis by node, justified graph pattern and dimension are the same. It also presents diverse unit-plans which shows a change in nLDK pattern or add f (foyer), AN (annex), S (service room), Fs (free space) to basic nLDK type. In summary, it demonstrates the possibility of creating new residental floor plans in multi-dwellings.

  • Although many studies have stressed the importance of technology in service innovation, the roles of technology in service innovation are at the center of debates in the service innovation literature. One major research stream regards technology as a trigger for other innovation based on resource advantage theory. Conversely, another major stream considers it as an enabler of other innovations based on complementary theory. The contradictory situation induces the necessity to better understand the role of technology in service innovation. Therefore, this study aims to identify the role of technology in service innovation. This study investigates the role of technology in service innovation based on a service innovation orientation framework. Four service innovation orientations (i.e., service creation, service delivery, customer interaction, and technology) are identified on the basis of Den Hertog's 4D model. This study proposes a research model that examines the indirect effect of technology orientation on innovation performance through the service creation and service delivery orientations, and the effect of technology orientation on firm performance as a moderator between customer interaction orientation and firm performance. Based on empirical data from 193 knowledge-intensive business service firms in Korea, we explain the role of technology in service innovation. The results indicate that technology orientation influences both service creation and service delivery orientations as an antecedent but customer interaction orientation as an enabler. The three service innovation orientations, which are directly and indirectly influenced by technology orientation, positively affect firm performance. The findings also show that the role of technology is different depending on the type of service innovation orientation in this study.

  • To evaluate the impact of avoidable mortality on the changes in life expectancy at birth in Korea. Standard life table techniques and the Arriaga method were used to calculate and to decompose life expectancy changes by age, effects and groups of causes of avoidable mortality among two periods(1990-2000 and 2000-2009). A list of causes of avoidable mortality reached by consensus and previously published in Spain was used. Mortality in young adults produced a reduction in life expectancy at birth during the 1990-2000, but there was an important increase in life expectancy at birth during the 2000-2009; in both cases, this was the result of factors amenable to health policy interventions. The highest improvement in life expectancy at birth was due to non-avoidable causes, but avoidable mortality through health service interventions showed improvements in life expectancy at birth in those elderly people than 1 year and in those younger. Making a distinction between several groups of causes of avoidable mortality and using decomposition by causes, ages and effects allowed us to better explain the impact of avoidable mortality on the life expectancy at birth of the whole population and gave a new dimension to this indicator that could be very useful in public health.
