  • The influence of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax on the metabolism of hens are studied experimentally. The hens are fed with three dose levels of ethanol extract of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax for 24 months and for comparing, there are control hens and young control hens. The results are as follows. 1. Hemoglobin, hematocrit and erythrocyte sedimentation rate values of hens fed with Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax are not significantly. different from control group. There is tendency of decreasing of erythrocyte sedimentation rate with aging. 2. The serum total lipid values of hens fed with Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax have tendency of increment compared with control group, especially in large dose treated hens of Panax ginseng and it is statistically significant. The serum cholesterol levels of all treated hens seem to be increased without significance statistically. Serum triglyceride level is higher in young hens compared with aged, and Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax treated hens reveal much higher values than control hens. So the increment of triglyceride levels in the Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax treated hens may be mainly contribute to increment of total lipid content. 3. Long-term administration of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax seem to increase total serum protein content. Such increment seem to be due to the increment of globulin, especially gamma globulin, which is statistically significant in the large dose group of Acanthopanax. There are no differences of serum albumin levels of all the groups. 4. The blood glucose level and the glycogen content of liver and muscle have no difference among all the experimental groups. To summarize the results, the effects of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax on the metabolism of hens have similarity in the majority of data of this experiment, and seem to be mainly influence to lipid and protein metabolisms by increasing serum triglyceride and globulin, especially gamma globulin.

  • To investigate the effects of Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets on serum and hepatic lipid levles and enzyme activities in rats administered with ethanol chronically, Sprague-Dawley male rats were AIN-76 diet(control), control diet plus ethanol, control plus Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diet, or control plus Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diet plus ethanol for 30 days. Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and GOT levels that were increased due to the chronic ethanol administration. In addition, Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets significantly decreased the liver triglyceride and total lipid levels that were increased due to the ethanol administration. The present findings, combined with previous data showing differences in the effects of cabbage diets having a high or a low level of GABA on the lipid levels and the serum Y-GPT activity of rats(Cha and OH[2000] J. Korean Soc. Food Sci. Nutr. 29, 500-505) raise the possibility that GABA in plants could have a nytraceutical role in the recovery of chronic alcohol-related diseases. • This research was performed to investigate the effect of Codonopsis lanceolata water extracted on the levels of lipid in serum and liver of rats fed high fat diet for 6 weeks. Experimental groups were divided into normal group(NF), high fat diet group(HF), high fat diet and Codonopsis lanceolata water extract treated group(HFW). Codonopsis lanceolata water extract was orally administrated at the level of 0.1ml/100g body weight per day. Body weight gain and feed intake were not significantly different in three groups, but feed efficiency ratio was increased in HF and HFW. The weights of liver, kidney, heart were not significantly different among the groups. The level of serum total lipid was higher in HF than NF, but Codonopsis lanceolata water extract decreased the level of the lipid. The levels of serum triglyceride and total cholesterol were significantly increased in HF, but they were significantly decreased by administration of Codonopsis lanceolata water extract. The levels of serum HDL-cholesterol and phospholipid were slightly increased by Codonopsis lanceolata water extract. Codonopsis lanceolata water extract significantly decreased the levels of liver total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol which were increased by high fat diet.

  • This study was performed to find and compare the characteristics of dietary factors and obesity indices on serum lipid profiles using 407 healthy adult males that had physical examinations conducted at the general hospital located in Suwon. The subjects were divided 56.3% for the normal group, 16.7% for TG, 14.5% for TC and 12.5% for TC TG group, respectively. When comparing the blood lipid profiles to normal group, TC group was high in both total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, TG group was high in triglyceride and low in HDL-cholesterol, TC TG group was high in triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and low in HDL-cholesterol. In comparison of blood lipid profiles with normal group, among anthropometric factors, body weigh, BMI (Body Mass Index) and WHR (Waist Hip Ratio) showed significant differences. TC group was high in both total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and TG group was high in triglyceride and low in HDL-cholesterol. TC TG group was high in triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and was low in HDL-cholesterol. Body weigh of TG group was significantly higher than that of normal group (p<0.05). BMI and WHR of TG group and TC TG group were significantly higher than those of normal group (p<0.05). Total cholesterol was mainly related to the intake of animal lipids and alcoholic beverage. Serum triglyceride levels were closely related with lipid intake and high BMI in this group. In TC TG group, BMI and WHR were high. As well, serum LDL-cholesterol was high and HDL-cholesterol was low which indicates TC TG group had the most undesirable blood lipid profiles. Therefore, it may be necessary to manage BMI and WHR to prevent hyperlipidemia and obesity for adult males in Suwon.

  • The berries of Schisandra chinensis (Schisandra fructus) are given the name Omiza in Korean (五味子), which translates as "five flavor fruit" because they possess all five basic flavors in Korean traditional herbal medicine: salty, sweet, sour, pungent (spicy), and bitter. It is used as a remedy for many ailments: to resist infections, increase skin health, and cure insomnia, coughing, and thirst. This study was designed to investigate the effects of Schisandra fructus butanol fraction (SFB) on serum lipid levels in hyperlipidemic mice. In this experiment, effects on total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride in serum were measured. In our results, SFB did not affect weight gain in hyperlipidemic mice. Oral administration of SFB lowered levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride, which were elevated by induction of hyperlipidemia. Finally, administration of SFB regulated changes in gene expression which were related to cell growth and differentiation.

  • In this study, we analyzed the biochemical factors in lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) leaf, stem, and yeonjabang and their effects on serum factor levels in mice fed a high-fat (HF) diet. The loutus leaf showed $9.47{\pm}0.30%$ moisture content, $8.25{\pm}0.39%$ ash, $21.45{\pm}1.25%$ crude protein, and $2.21{\pm}0.13%$ crude fat content; the lotus stem showed $11.84{\pm}0.43%$ moisture, $10.21{\pm}0.64%$ ash, $17.55{\pm}0.92%$ crude protein, and $4.16{\pm}0.23%$ crude fat content; and the lotus yeonjabang showed $11.86{\pm}0.50%$ moisture, $6.81{\pm}0.51%$ ash, $18.71{\pm}1.02%$ crude protein, and $3.95{\pm}0.15%$ crude fat. Blood triglyceride levels were higher in the HF group ($146.43{\pm}38.81mg/dL$), and lower in the HF+yeonjabang groups ($98.00{\pm}17.18mg/dL$). In particular, blood triglyceride levels were significantly lower in the groups that had 10% dry yeonjabang powder added to the high-fat diet. The inclusion of excessive high-fat diet increased concentrations of serum insulin and leptin. Serum leptin concentrations were highest in the HF group mice ($3.00{\pm}1.35ng/dL$), whereas they were significantly lower in the HF+yeonjabang groups by $1.34{\pm}0.52ng/dL$ (p<0.05). Thus, addition of dry yeonjabang powder to the high-fat diet was more effective in regulating the levels of serum triglycerides and leptin in mice. Additional studies would help in the development of yeonjabang as a functional food.

  • In order to investigate whether Eisenia bicyclis (EB) as a functional food material improves serum lipid status, supplementation of EB powder or EB extract to the high fat/cholesterol diet was tested in 6-week old male Sprague-Dawley rats for four weeks. In the first experiment, four kinds of seaweed powder -Eisenia bicyclis (EB), Undaria pinnatifida (Up), Laminaria japonica (LJ), and Ecklonia stolonifera (ES) were compared with alginic acid (ALG) as well as control. In the second experiment, EB water extract and EB ethanol extract and EB pill containing EB and LJ powder were compared with the EB powder. Amounts of dietary fiber contained in experimental diets were adjusted to provide 5% of diets. Serum total cholesterol was significantly lower only in rats fed LJ or EB powder, but HDL cholesterol was higher in rats fed UP, LJ, ES or EB powder. Ratios of HDL-/total cholesterol of all seaweed groups including ALG were significantly higher than that of the control group. Serum triglyceride was lower in LJ, EB nd ES powder groups than the control group. In comparison of EB extracts, triglyceride level was decreased in rats fed only EB water extract as compared to control rats, but HDL cholesterol was elevated with both water and ethanol extracts. Serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride were decreased and HDL cholesterol was increased by the EB pill. Serum levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances were lower in rats fed ES powder, and EB powder, EB water extract or EB pill, as compared to the control rats. Supplementation of EB powder and EB pill reduced serum level of GOT and GPT, respectively, as compared to the control group. In conclusion, EB and EB pill improve serum lipid status and may be utilized as ingredient of functional foods for the purpose of improving serum lipid profile and inhibiting peroxidation of lipids.

  • This study was performed to study the effects of Gastrodiae rhizoma on lipid concentration of serum and liver in rats fed high fat diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rat were randomly assigned to 5 groups such as basal diet only(BDG), high fat diet(HFG) and high fat diet with 5% processed Gastrodiae rhizoma(GRL), high fat diet with 10% processed Gastrodiae rhizoma(GRM), high fat diet with 15% processed Gastrodiae rhizoma(GRH) supply each of the experimental diets for 6 weeks. Food intake was significantly decreased by both high fat intake and high fat with Gastrodiae rhizoma intake compared with basal diet intake but weight gain was not significantly different from each groups. Liver weights were significantly lowered by Gastrodiae rhizoma intake compared with high fat intake. In the serum, total cholesterol was not significantly different with each groups, but triglyceride level was significantly lowered by Gastrodiae rhizoma intake as compared with control. In the liver, lipid levels inceased with the Gastrodiae rhizoma intake, but total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were not significantly different with control. These results showed that dietary Gastrodiae rhizoma as supplementary food may decrease triglyceride in the serum.
