This study investigated the color change, enhancement of dye uptake, washing fastness, and light fastness of cotton and silk when dyed with Juniperus chinensis and Terminalia chebula (combination dyeing) using various methods. The dyeing methods were 1) dyeing Juniperus chinensis extract and Terminalia chebula Retzius extract sequentially (J-T), 2) dyeing Terminalia chebula Retzius extract and Juniperus chinensis extract sequentially (T-J), 3) dyeing Juniperus chinensis extract and Terminalia chebula Retzius extract simultaneously (J+T), and 4) dyeing Juniperus chinensis extract 4 times repeatedly and followed by a dyeing Terminalia chebula Retzius extract in sequence. In terms of increased dyeing uptake, combination dyeing (dyeing 2 times like method 1, 2, 3) had the same impact as the repeated dyeing (method 4). The color of J, T combination dyeing showed wide range of mixed YR series, Y series resulting from Terminalia chebula Retzius, and R series resulting from Juniperus chinensis. In cotton, J-T dyeing method showed superior enhancement of dye uptake, and T-J method in silk. In both of the cases, Y series color from Terminalia chebula Retzius extract was mainly shown (Y series color was superior to R series color after dyeing). Therefore, it is recommended for cotton to implement T-J method and for silk to implement J-T method in order to enhance both dyeing uptake and emphasize the color of R series. The K/S value of combination dyed fabrics was decreased by increasing washing time; however, the K/S value of combination dyed fabrics was increased by increasing UV irradiation time. But after repeated washing and longer UV irradiation, ${\Delta}E$ value of combination dyed fabric became smaller compared to fabric dyed with Juniperus chinensis only. Thus, it was found that after J, T combination dyeing, fabric became less prone to fading by washing and UV than after Juniperus chinensis single dyeing was done.
Molecular phylogenetic studies were conducted to evaluate taxonomic identities and relationships among 16 species of the korean genus Iris L. Korean Iris was grouped by five clades. Series Laevigatae, Tripetalae, Laevigatae and Sibiricae was included to Clade I. Series Chinensis, and Easatae was composed to Clade II. Series Chinensis was included to Clade III. Series Chinensis was composed to Clade IV. Series Crossiris, Pumilae and Pardanthopsis was included to Clade V. Iris dichotoma, I. mandshurica and I. tectorum formed one clade, and it was located mostly in the basal group. I. minutiaurea and I. koreana was not formed independent clade, so it is not clear between them about taxonomic identities. Iris tectorum was established taxonomic system by Series Cossiris in Subgenus Crossiris. Series Chinensis (I. odaesanensis, I. minutiaurea, I. koreana, I. rossii var. latifoia, and I. rossii) was distinguished is clear by Series Chinensis (I. odaesanensis, I. minutiaurea and I. koreana) and Series Chinensis (I. rossii var. latifoia and I. rossii). The Genus Iris was divided into four subgenus (Limniris, Crossiris, Iris and Pardanthopsis). We thought that evolved to subgenus Limniris in subgenus Crossiris, iris and Pardanthopsis.
The analysis in external morphology of Astilbe including three endemic species in Korea was undertaken. From this study, five species and three varieties of Astilbe in Korea were redescribed. Their scientific names and Korean names were also consulted. Korean Astilbe could be grouped in two Series-Series 1. Simplicifoliae; Astilbe simplicifoliae and Series 2. compositae; A. taquetii, A. microphylla, A. chiensis var. chinensis, A. chinensis var. paniculata, A. chinensis var. davidii, A. divaricata, A. koreana. Interspecific relationships of eight taxa were represented as a toxonomic model by the considering their external morphology-pubescence on floral axis and surface of leafblade, inflorescence type, ratio of petal and stamen length-and distributional range in Korea and neighboring countries.
Series Chinensis, Genus Iris, endemic to the far regions of East Asia, consists of four species and related varieties. This series is divided into two major groups (I. rossii and I. minutiaurea complex). In this study, the ITS region and matK gene sequences within nuclear ribosomal DNA and plastid DNA were analyzed in order to investigate the phylogenetic relationships among the I. minutiaurea complex (I. minutiaurea, I. odaesanensis, and I. koreana) and the taxonomic identities of a putative hybrid in Mt. Palgong. In the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1, 5.8S, and ITS2) region, a total of 106 cloned genomic sequences from three taxa were obtained to study the intragenomic polymorphisms of the ITS regions. Three taxa revealed high levels of intragenomic polymorphisms, indicative of incomplete nrDNA concerted evolution. This incomplete ITS concerted evolution in the series Chinensis may be linked to the recent species divergence and frequent interspecies hybridization of the series Chinensis. In the matK gene, three taxa were fairly separated by eleven variable sites. In eight individuals collected on Mt. Palgong, putative hybrids between I. odaesanensis and I. minutiaurea were clustered in the I. minutiaurea clade in the NJ (neighbor-joining) tree based on the matK gene. However, in the ITS tree, some of them were clustered in the I. odaesanensis clade and others were clustered in the I. minutiaurea clade. Therefore, the individuals on Mt. Palgong were formed by the hybridization between two taxa (I. odaesanensis and I. minutiaurea) and not through the lineage of I. koreana.
The purpose of this study was to examine improvements in dye uptake, expression of various colors, and color fastness when washed or exposed to light. We examined these improvements by doing the combination dyeing of Juniperus chinensis heartwood and Alnus japonica heartwood extracts. In this study, two combination dyeing methods were used. One-bath dyeing involves combining Juniperus chinensis heartwood extract and Alnus japonica heartwood extract. Two-bath dyeing involves dyeing by sequence, which means that we dyed the Juniperus chinensis heartwood extract first and then dyed Alnus japonica heartwood extract sequentially (or in the opposite order). In terms of improving dye uptake, two-bath dyeing was more effective than one-bath dyeing. For cotton, dyeing Juniperus chinensis heartwood extract first and then dyeing Alnus japonica heartwood extract sequentially showed higher dye uptake in the two-bath method, while for silk, there wasn't much difference in the dyeing order. Through combination dyeing, red-violet color from Juniperus chinensis heartwood and brown color from Alnus japonica heartwood made various Y, YR, R series of color as a result. Moreover, combination dyeing improved fabric's fastness when washed or exposed to light. In the case of cotton, fabric dyed using two-bath dyeing, with Juniperus chinensis heartwood extract being the first dye, showed improvement in fastness to washing and light. And in the case of silk, fastness to washing and light improved regardless of dyeing order in two-bath dyeing.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the pigment and the dyeability of juniperus chinensis needles, berry, bark and heartwood extracts using distilled water, methanol, normal butanol and ethyl acetate as a solvent. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum bands of the extracts were measured at around 280nm to 320nm in all the solvent extracts. The maximum absorption wavelength was able to determine tannin. All the solvent extracts except for distilled water extracts were able to confirm the presence of chlorophyll. Infrared absorption spectra (FT-IR) of all parts of the extracts showed broad absorption bands of OH due to phenolic-OH, benzene CH peak of phenol chemical structure, ether-based stretching vibration peak and the peak of flavonoid compounds that appeared in all the solvent extracts. The yield of juniper needles and heartwood in distilled water and methanol extraction were effective. Extraction of berry yields in distilled water was also effective. The yield of ethanol extraction from the bark showed better efficiency. As a result of using distilled water for the dye solution, the color of the fabrics dyed with all extracts of the needles and Y series berries generally showed light Y progression with a strong red tinge. By using a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% distilled water for the dye solution, the color of the fabrics dyed with needles and berry extracts showed Y series dominantly. The color of the fabrics dyed with Bark and heartwood extracts were dominantly R series.
The purpose of this study is to investigate dyeing properties and functionality of cotton and silk fabrics dyed with hot-water extract from Juniperus chinensis heartwood. Water-soluble dye of Juniperus chinensis heartwood extracted with distilled water was expressed YR color series. Dye uptake of cotton continued to increase according to the increase of the dye concentration. Its variation trends were shown to be similar to the isothermal absorption curve of the Freundlich. Dye uptake of silk was better than cotton, increased depending on increasing concentration of the dye, dyeing time and temperature. Its variation trends were shown to be similar to the isothermal absorption curve of the Langmuir. As the pH increased, the dye uptake of fabrics reduced and showed increased on red tinge. Colors of the dyed fabrics were various, depending on dye concentration and the mordant type and mordant concentration. Washing fastness, light fastness and perspiration fastness were not good. However, rubbing and dry cleaning fastness showed relatively good grade. Dyed fabrics of ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability were improved. And dyed fabrics showed antimicrobial abilities of 99.9% against Staphylococcus aureus.
RAPD analyses were compared for 17 taxa of Korean Iris including the subgenus Sisyrinchium and Belamcanda. Eighty scorable RAPD markers were formed from the PCR reactions using 10 random oligoprimers. In this systematic analyses which used neighbor-joining methods including bootstrapping analyses with genetic coefficients, the Korean Iris were divided into three subgenera (Limniris, Crossiris, Pardanthopsis), or two genera (Limniris, Pardanthopsis). The molecular data agree with the previous classification system that recognized two sections and six series for the subgenus Limniris because the subgenus is comprised of four clades in the RAPD analyses. According to the molecula data, the series Chinensis should be divided into two groups. The minutoaurea group is composed of I. koreana, I. odaesanensis, and I. minitoaurea, while the rossi group is comprised of two varieties of I. rossi. The series Tripetalae is closely allied with the series Sibiricae, whereas the series Ensatae is recognized as a sister group to the series Ruthencae. The molecular phylogeny, which was based on RAPD analysis, for the most part agreed with the data proposed by previous authors. This is because the basis of morphological and ITS sequence data suggests that the RAPD markers should be very useful in addressing phylogenetic questions about the genus Iris.
This study was conducted to determine the herbicidal activity of allelochemicals and identify herbicidal compounds in bulbs of Lycoris chinensis var. sinuolata. Methanol extract was purified by a series of silica gel flash column chromatography and HPLC. The final HPLC gave two active fractions and an herbicidal compound was obtained. By GC/MS analysis, the herbicidal compound was identified as montanine ($O^2$-methyl pancracine), an isoquinoline alkaloid. Montanine showed 100% of growth inhibition on the shoot and root of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) seedlings at $50\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ as compared with the control.
The genetic diversity among the genus Viola was evaluated using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. A total of 142 distinct amplification fragments by 18 random primers were scored to perform the cluster analysis with UPGMA. Viola species from the subsection Patellares were clustered into group I to IV. The groups from I to IV were consistent with its morphological taxonomy, series Pinnatae, Chinensis, Variegatae, and Patellares in the subsection Patellares, respectively. Even though V. albida and V. albida var. takahasii were classified in Chinensis, they were assigned into group I. The cluster analysis separated other subsections from Patellares in the section Nomimium. Interestingly, V. verecunda and V. grypoceras in subsections Biobatae and Trigonocarpae, respectively, were clustered into group C with a high similarity coefficient. Therefore, RAPD analysis can be used for providing an alternative classification system to identify genotypes and morphological characters of Viola species.
