Poly(Imide) Separator Functionalized by Melamine Phosphonic Acid for Regulating Structural and Thermal Stabilities of Lithiumion Batteries

  • As the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) continues to increase, various separators are being developed to with the aim of improving the safety performance. Although poly(imide) (PI)-based separators are widely used, it is difficult to control their pore size and distribution, and this may further increase the risk associated. Herein, a melamine phosphonic acid (MP)-coated PI separator that can effectively control the pore structure of the substrate is suggested as a remedy. After the MP material is embedded into the PI separator with a simple one-step casting process, it effectively clogs the large pores of the PI separator, preventing the occurrence of internal short circuits during charging. It is anticipated that the MP material can also suppress rapid thermal runaway upon cycling due to its ability to reduce the internal temperature of the LIB cell caused by the desirable endothermic behavior around 300℃. According to experiments, the MP-coated PI separator not only decreases the thermal shrinkage rate better than commercial poly(ethylene) (PE) separators but also exhibits a desirable Gurley number (109.6 s/100 cc) and electrolyte uptake rate (240%), which is unique. The proposed separator is electrochemically stable in the range 0.0-5.0 V (vs. Li/Li+), which is the typical working potential of conventional electrode materials. In practice, the MP-coated PI separator exhibits stable cycling performance in a graphite-LiNi0.83Co0.10Mn0.07O2 full cell without an internal short circuit (retention: 90.3%).

  • A series of numerical simulation has been carried out to study performance of a cyclone type oil separator, which is designed for the compressor of a refrigeration system. Working fluid is R22, which is a typical refrigerant, and mineral oil droplet is supplied. Pitch of the helix is considered as design parameters to make a compact separator. Depending on the helix pitch, separation efficiency varies from 97.5 to 99%, while predicted pressure drop ranges from 5 to 6.5 kPa. Considering both of the pressure drop and separation efficiency, helix pitch of the separator has been designed as 50 mm.

  • 본 연구에서는 축산에서 발생하는 분료의 슬러지을 고체와 액체로 분류하는 장치를 개발하기 위한 논문이다. 필터의 재료는 농촌에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 왕겨를 사용하였으며 제안한 고액 분리기의 성능을 실험적으로 도출하였고, 필터두께와 왕겨 입겨 입자크기 및 주입 압력에 따른 토출량으로 나타냈다. 이 연구에서 고액 분리기의 최적 설계조건을 구한 후 이를 토대로 왕겨를 이용한 고액 분리기의 성능을 평가한 결과 좋은 성능을 얻었다.

  • The oil trap in oil separator is one of the most important characteristics for normal operation of compressor. In this study, oil separation characteristics has been investigated for $CO_2$/PAG mixture using a gravity type of oil separator. The experimental study has been carried out in the range of oil concentration 0 to 5 weight-percent and the mixture temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The results obtained indicate that oil separation ratio in oil separator is increased with an increase in the oil concentration and mixture temperature.

  • A drum type magnetic separator was designed and optimized by computer simulation. The separator consisted of rotating outer shell of drum, magnetic flux generator drum which was assembled with numbers of disk type magnet holders, and drum axis around which the magnet holders were fixed. NdFeB magnet blocks were inserted into the disks, and the disks were assembled layer by layer along the drum axis. Magnetic circuits of the separator were simulated on the basis of highest magnetic strength, least cost, and high yield of separation by using a Vector Field S/W employing the Opera-2D program. The separator proved a separation yield of 95% in removing fine iron-base particles, and installed at Hot Rolling Mill of Pohang Iron & Steel Co. In Korea.

2D Finite element analysis of rectangular water tank with separator wall using direct coupling

  • The present paper deals with the analysis of water tank with elastic separator wall. Both fluid and structure are discretized and modeled by eight node-elements. In the governing equations, pressure for the fluid domain and displacement for the separator wall are considered as nodal variables. A method namely, direct coupled for the analysis of water tank has been carried out in this study. In direct coupled approach, the solution of the fluid-structure system is accomplished by considering these as a single system. The hydrodynamic pressure on tank wall is presented for different lengths of tank. The results show that the magnitude of hydrodynamic pressure is quite large when the distances between the separator wall and tank wall are relatively closer and this is due to higher rotating tendency of fluid and the higher sloshed displacement at free surface.

회전 원추형 마늘 쪽분리기 개발에 관한 연구 (I) -시작기 개발 및 성능시험- (Development of Rotating Corn Type Garlic Separator(I) -Prototype and its performance test-)

  • This study was conducted to develop a garlic separator which could to reduce the labor in preparation of seeding. After consideration of the design criteria of a garlic separator such as no additional conveying device, simple construction and operation, enhancement of separating efficiency, reduction of damage, degree a rotating corn type garlic separator was designed. The effects of design parameters such as height and angle of the inner and outer corns, rotating speed of inner corn on the separating performance of the prototype were estimated. In performance was compared with manual work. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Garlic bulbs were separated by a spiral movement in the gap between inner rotating corn and outer fixed corn. At constant feed rate of garlic bulbs, the capacity of garlic separation increased with increase of rotating speed of inner corn. Especially, the capacity was very high at the rotating speeds of 300 and 400rpm. 2. The damage degree of separated garlics increased with rotating speed of corn within 10%. Above 300rpm, separability of Uisung garlic was about 100% and incomplete separation of Namdo garlic was within 2%. 3. The capacity of prototype garlic separator developed in this study was 30 times as large as that of human being.

배열회수보일러 기수분리기의 응력해석 및 평가 (Stress Analysis and Evaluation of Steam Separator of Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG))

  • Stress of a steam separator, equipment of the high-pressure (HP) evaporator for a HRSG, was analyzed and evaluated according to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 2. First, from the analysis results of the piping system model of the HP evaporator, reaction forces of the riser tubes connected to the steam separator, i.e., nozzle loads, were derived. Next, a finite element model of the steam separator was constructed and analyzed for the design pressure and the nozzle loads. The results show that the maximum stress occurred at the bore of the riser nozzle. The primary membrane stresses at the shell and nozzle were found to be less than the allowable stress. Next, the steam separator was analyzed for the steady-state operating conditions of operating pressure, operating temperature, and nozzle loads. The maximum stress occurred at the bore of the riser nozzle. The primary plus secondary membrane plus bending stress at the shell and nozzle was found to be less than the allowable stress.

  • As the separator becomes thinner, the role of thermal stability becomes more important in ensuring the high capacity of medium- and large-sized lithium-ion secondary batteries. In this study, we researched coating technology to improve the separator's thermal stability. We minimized the coating time by optimizing the design of a vertical two-stage coater that was thin, uniform, and capable of coating on both sides at the same time with a maximum 2㎛ thickness coating layer of fluorinated polymer (PVdF-HFP) on the bare polyethylene (PE) separator, which increased the thermal stability. In addition, during the coating process, a dual-jacket-roll method of drying was developed that increased the drying effectiveness without thermal damage to the separator. We also investigated the thermal stability of the separator manufactured from a coating machine, and studied the battery-applied performance by making a lithium-ion pouch battery.

  • This study considers the feasibility of using the low cost assembled separator. The graphite plate has been widely used as the separator in the field of PEMFCs(Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) industry because of its excellent material properties such as good corrosion resistance, good electrical conductance and so on. However, there are some problems for the commercialization due to its poor cost effectiveness for the large volume manufacturing and lack of mechanical strength. From this respect, this study has focused on the manufacturing technology in order to reduce the price for the commercialization of separator. This study also shows that the assembled separator of the suggested structure, which is composed of grafoil and PC(PolyCarbonate) materials, could be manufactured at low cost enough for the mass production. The flow fields produced by cutting foils and the base plates of the separators were simply made by mechanical work.
