The separation and determination of inorganic cations by a capillary zone electrophoresis was studied. Cations were separated by the capillary column and detected by indirect UV method. The running buffer of 0.03 M creatinine and 0.02 M-hydroxy isobutylic acid solution (pH 4.8) was used to improve the mobility of ions in the column. A potential of 18 kV was applied at anode. A complete separation of cations ranged within 15 min and detection limits were between 0.1 and 1.0 ppm. The applicability of the method for real samples was demonstrated.
Electrochemical ion exchange method is expected to be one of the most acceptable techniques for the separation of radioactive cations from nuclear wastewater. In this study a thin film of hexacyanoferrate on nickel surface was derivatized chemically in an aqueous potassium-ferricyanide solution. Electrochemical redox behavior of the nickel hexacyanoferrate(NiHCNFe) film electrode was investigated with the use of cyclic voltammetry potentiostated from -100 to 800 mV versus SCE. The electro-reduction characteristics of the NiHCNFe film were examined in the cobalt solutions. The NiHCNFe ion exchanger was more useful at lower concentration, lower temperature, and pH7 of the cobalt solution. The capacity loss of NiHCNFe was 0.018%/cycle that was less than the average loss of 2~3%/cycle of the convective organic exchanger. The 45~55% of the initial cobalt ions was electro-deposited on the NiHCNFe by using continuous recirculating reactor system. As a result, it was found that the electroactive NiHCNFe films showed better performance than the organic resins for the separation of cobalt ion from the aqueous solutions.
Ion exchange procedure was studied for the separation of thorium from the acidic solution obtained by means of decomposition of monazite with alkali solution. Present cation exchange method consists of adsorption of cations from the sample solution (ca. 0.6N HCl acidic) onto Amberlite IR-120 resin, elution of all of the rare earth cations with 700 ml. of 2N Hydrochloric acid, and recovery of the thorium by elution with 200ml. of 6N sulfaric acid. Thorium recovery by the ion-exchange method mentioned above, was quantitative, and it is concluded that this ion-exchange method may be used not only for industrial separation of thorium from rare earths but also for quantitative determination of thorium with relative error, ${\pm}1.0.$.
The simultaneous determination of anions ($SO_4 ^{2-},\;Cl^-,\;and\;NO_3^-$) and cations ($Na^+,\;NH^{4+},\;K^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;and\;Ca^{2+}$) in natural water obtained by Nakdong River waters system in Korea were performed by ion-exclusion/cationexchange chromatography with conductimetric detection. The stationary phase was a polymethacrylate-based weakly acidic cation-exchange resin column in the $H^+$-form and a weak-acid eluent. When using only a 1.4 mM sulfosalicylic acid/6 mM 18-crown-6 ether as an eluent, good resolution of both anions and cations, minimum time required for the separation, and satisfactory detection sensitivity were obtained in a reasonable time. The method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of anions and cations in natural waters.
A simple and quick separation technique for selenite in natural water was developed using $TiO_2$@$SiO_2/Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles. For the synthesis of nanoparticles, a polymer-assisted sol-gel method using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) was developed to control particle dispersion in the synthetic procedure. In addition, titanium butoxide (TBT) precursor, instead of the typical titanium tetra isopropoxide, was used for the formation of the $TiO_2$ shell. The synthesized nanoparticles were used to separate selenite ($Se^{4+}$) in the presence of $Se^{6+}$ or selenium anions for the photocatalytic reduction to $Se^0$ atom on the $TiO_2$ shell, followed by magnetic separation using $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles. The reduction efficiency of the photocatalytic reaction was 81.4% at a UV power of 6W for 3 h with a dark adsorption of 17.5% to the nanoparticles, as determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The developed separation method can be used for the speciation and preconcentration of selenium cations in environmental and biological analysis.
The surface of Poly(ether imide) (PEI) membranes has been sulfonated using CIS03H. The resulting membranes were characterized through the analysis of ESCA and contact angle measurements The sulfonated PEI membranes were exposed to gases of $O_2$, $N_2$, and $CO_2$ to measure the permeation rates and ideal separation factors. In addition, the diffusivities and solubilities of individual gases were measured. The diffusivity effect is more dominant than the solubility one on gas transports.
Cryptand[2,2] was grafted to low crosslinked styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer by substitution reaction with chloromethylated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer. This resin was stable in concentrated acid and base, and showed a good resistance to heat. The pH, time, and concentration dependence of the adsorption of metal ions by this resin were studied. Studies on the chromatographic separation of lanthanides, $Cu^{2+}$ and $UO_2^{2+_2}$ were also carried out with various eluents. These studies demonstrate that this resin has the applicability to the preconcentration and separation of metal ions.
A high quality Na-X zeolite membrane was synthesized on a seeded ${\alpha}-alumina$ disc by the secondary growth method. Structural characterization was done by X-ray spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and AFM imaging. The performance evaluation of the membrane was firstly tested in separation of glucose/water solutions by pervaporation process. There was obtained a separation factor $182.7{\pm}8.8$, while the flux through the membrane was $3.6{\pm}0.3kg\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$. The zeolite membrane was then used for desalination of aqueous solutions consisting of $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Cs^+$ and $Sr^{2+}$ because of the importance of these ions in water and wastewater treatments. The effects of some parameters such as temperature and solution concentration on the desalination process were studied for investigating of diffusion/adsorption mechanism in membrane separation. Finally, high water fluxes ranged from 2 up to $9kg\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ were obtained and the rejection factors were resulted more than 95% for $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ and near to 99% for $Cs^+$ and $Sr^{2+}$. Based on the results, fluxes were significantly improved due to convenient passage of water molecules from large pores of NaX, while the fouling was declining dramatically. Based on the results, NaX zeolite can efficiently use for the removal of different cations from wastewaters.
