  • This paper analyzes the impact of digitalization on networks in Seoul Metropolitan Area by considering facility investment together with operatinng costs. A stepwise evolution method toward a digitalized double-homming architecture is proposed to accommodate most efficiently with existing analog-oriented networks.

Spatial Association of Population Concentration in Seoul Metropolitan Area (서울대도시권 인구집중의 공간적 연관성 연구)

  • This paper analyzes the spatial patterns of population distribution in Seoul Metropolitan Area in terms of spatial association using spatial statistics and spatial exploratory technique. Our empirical analysis based on global index shows that, in Seoul Metropolitan Area, the population had been distributed with strong positive spatial association over the period of 1980-2005. It implies that the population of each region is affected by the population distribution of adjacent regions. In addition, the analysis using local index was conducted for detecting the local patterns of spatial association, and the result shows that the clusters of population had been moved in the direction of West(Incheon and Bucheon) and South(Anyang and Seongnam) of Seoul where a large scale of lands or towns were developed over the period. These results will be the preliminary data for establishing management and development plans of Seoul Metropolitan Area.

A Study of Structural Changes in the Seoul Metropolitan Area's Economy Since the 1990's : A Decomposition Analysis of Labor Productivity (1990년대 이후 수도권 경제의 구조적 변화에 관한 연구 : 노동생산성의 요소분해를 중심으로)

  • The Seoul Metropolitan Area's economy has undergone structural changes since the 1990s. With recent structural changes in the Korean economy in mind, this paper employs a decomposition analysis of Gross Regional Domestic Product per head and labor productivity to examine how the region's economic performance has changed relative to that of Korea since the 1900s. There are some findings. First, a strong cumulative causation process, derived from industrial linkages and agglomeration effects, has oocurred in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, widening economic disparities between the Seoul Metropolitan Area and the other regions especially since the Korean financial crisis in 1997 mainly due to Gyeonggi province's overwhelming cumulative GRDP growth relative to the national average. Second, the Seoul Metropolitan Area has begun w display good economic performance in terms of labour productivity relative w the national average since the late 1990s, with the region's industrial upgrading being implemented. Finally, manufacturing, financial intermediation and communications have made sensitive contributions to relative Seoul Metropolitan Area's labor productivity growth.

Housing Costs of Beginning-stage Career Young Renters in Seoul Metropolitan Area (수도권 사회진출초기 임차자의 주거비 실태)

  • This study was aimed to explore housing costs and housing cost burdens of early-career young renter households in Seoul Metropolitan area. Between March 10 and April 24, 2014, an online questionnaire survey was conducted to young professionals in Seoul Metropolitan area living apart from their parents. Among the responses collected, this study analyzed 476 useable responses from renter households. Major findings were as follows: (1) Jeon-se renters' deposit was average 2.24 times their annual income; deposit of monthly renters with deposit was average 6.7 times their monthly income and their monthly rent was 18.6 percent of their monthly income; and monthly rent of monthly renters without deposit was about 23 percent of their monthly income; (2) thirty percent of the respondents were found to have housing cost burden paying 25 percent or more of their income for rental costs; and (3) about 55 percent received parental supports to pay current housing costs. The study findings implies that it is critical to extend provision of affordable housing units with small or no deposit for beginning-stage professionals.

Changes in dietary habits and chronic diseases before and after COVID-19 by regions using data from the 2018-2020 Korea Community Health Survey and Consumer Behavior Survey for Foods: a cross-sectional study

  • Objectives: This study examined the changes in dietary habits, the prevalence of chronic diseases, and mental health problems in the regional areas of the Republic of Korea before and after the COVID-19 pandemic to provide evidence of the status of regional health inequalities. Methods: This study analyzed Korean adults aged 19 or older who participated in the Korea Community Health Survey (n = 686,708) and Consumer Behavior Survey for Foods (n = 19,109) from 2018 to 2020. The participants were classified according to their residence area (Seoul metropolitan area, Metropolitan cities, Provinces); 2018-2019 were defined as before COVID-19, and 2020 as after COVID-19. The dietary behaviors, chronic diseases, and mental health problems were measured using a self-report questionnaire. Results: After COVID-19, the eating-out usage rate in the Seoul metropolitan area and Provinces decreased compared to before COVID-19 (P < 0.001), and when responding that they eat out, the frequency of eating out with household members in the Seoul metropolitan area increased (P = 0.024). The deliveries/takeout usage rate in the Provinces decreased after COVID-19 compared to before (P < 0.001). After COVID-19, the prevalence of obesity decreased in all regions (P < 0.001), and the prevalence of hypertension increased significantly in the Provinces (P = 0.015). The prevalence of diabetes mellitus increased continuously before and after COVID-19 in all regions (P < 0.002). High-risk subjective stress levels increased significantly in the Seoul metropolitan area (P < 0.001), and sleep duration significantly increased in all regions (P < 0.001). Major depressive disorder was reduced significantly in Metropolitan cities (P = 0.042) and Provinces (P < 0.001). Conclusions: After the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of chronic diseases and mental health problems showed regional differences along with changes in dietary habits. It is necessary to reflect the regional differences in dietary habits in future policies resolving regional health inequalities.

  • This study reveals a change in the growth cycle of metropolitan with analyzing the population of Seoul metropolitan area and identifies the characteristics of each urban area. For this, the exponential growth of the city, Roxy index, which in recent years been actively studied in Japan, has applied. As a result, the entire metropolitan area and central areas, and the southern region are about to move to the accelerating centralization phase. In the phase of suburbanization are highly likely to turn into the new phase of regression phase. In addition, the northern and eastern suburbs are currently in progress with the accelerating decentralization phase and are expected to be converted in the decelerating decentralization phase. Through this implication in Seoul metropolitan area, it is necessary to carry out the policy responses about regional maintenance by connecting to the changes in direction and speed of cycle phase of city. The results of this study can be used as basic data to determine the long-term future growth and decline of the metropolitan area.

The Relative Contribution of SO2-to-sulfate Conversion Processes over the Metropolitan Seoul Area (수도권에서 아황산가스의 황산염으로 전환시 각 과정의 상대적 기여도)

  • The major conversion processes of SO$_2$ to sulfate are reactions in gaseous, aqueous phase and on dust surface. Using the measurement data in Ganghwa, the background area of metropolitan Seoul Area, the relative contiribution of the conversion processes are estimated. Generally, aqueous cloud if the most important conversion path followed by dust surface, gas, and aqueous aerosol. Importance of conversion on dust surface increases for the dust storm period. The total conversion rate values over the metropolitan Seoul area are between 1.5 and 8.8$\times$10$^{-11}$ mole m$^{-3}$ air.

  • Nowadays, becoming wide area is going on over Seoul Metropolitan area. But urban railway, very important traffic facilities, is operated in normal operating position and it gives cause to week the function of commuting long distance. This paper is focus on studying the feasibility of rapid operation system in Seoul Metropolitan area through comparing the present state of urban railway in Seoul Metropolitan area with a case of the advanced facilities in developed country. And we develop rapid operation system in general aspect through only consideration of operation planning without improvement of facilities. Also, we come up with new concept of rapid operation system through investigation of limits of the preceding researches

Analysis of the Driving Patterns Concerned with Fuel Economy in Seoul Metropolitan Area (서울특별시의 주행특성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The driving patterns in Seoul metropolitan area were surveyed in an experiment involving 1,212km of driving along seventeen representative routes. The speed and fuel consumption data were recorded and the influence of driving patterns on vehicle fuel economy was analyzed by statistical techniques. The results showed that characteristics of driving in Seoul metropolitan area are far different from that of CVS-75 mode and then on-road fuel economy in Seoul may be small as compared with that of CVS-75 mode. Finally, it was proposed that CVS-75 mode fuel economy should be modified by applying adjustment factor to represent actual on-road fuel economy.

A Study on the Establishment of the Metropolitan Transportation Area (광역 교통권 설정에 관한 연구)

  • The research deals with the establishment of transportation areas in the metropolitan cities. The purpose is three-fold ; 1) to review the existing literature : 2) to analyze the commuting (work and school) pattern and interregional movement pattern of passengers and freights ; 3) to establish the metropolitan transportation area based on the above analyses. The transportation area is defined by the analysis of trip pattern to the center city of each metropolitan area. The detailed indices for establishment are selected by the rank-size and time-distance analyses. For the operational purpose, the study defines 3 different transportation areas as follows : the first transportation area means the directly effecting region of the center city ; the second means the region with many reverse trips and development potentials ; and the third means the indirectly effecting region. It can be concluded that the first transportation area includes 10 cities and 5 counties in Seoul metropol tan region, Yangdsan-Gun, Kimhae-Gun and Kimhae-Si in Busan, Dalsung-Gun, Chilgok-Gun and Kyungsan-Gun in Daegu, Hwasung-Gun and Raju-Gun in Kwangju, and Daeduk-Gun in Daejun. These results could be expected to have many implications for the establishment of area-wide public transportation network, the metropolitan transportation decision-making bodies and others.
