An Analysis on Sentence Structures and Interpretation Errors in Word Problems in Mathematics -Focussing on the 2nd grade elementary students- (수학 문장제의 문장 구조와 해석상의 오류 분석 -초등학교 2학년을 중심으로-)

  • The purposes of this study are to analyze sentence structures of word problems suggested in educational math programs for the 2nd grade elementary students and error patterns in sentence interpretation, and examine how sentence structures influence on errors during sentence comprehension. Based on the results of the analysis on 168 word problems suggested in math textbooks for the 2nd grade elementary students and error patterns observed while 160 the 2nd grade elementary students attempted to solve math word problems, easy and simple vocabularies are repeatedly used in the sentence structures of word problems and specific real life materials such as fruits, books, the number of people and etc. were repeatedly used. 51.56% of errors in sentence interpretation observed was higher than 39.20% of calculation errors and backtracking operation, a length of sentences, the numbers used in questions and off were analyzed to be involved in the errors in interpretation. Therefore, it is very important to make word problems from a student's points of view rather than a teacher's point of view and the study suggests that teachers help students learn basic sentence interpretation skills.

Sentence design for speech recognition database

  • The material of database for speech recognition should include phonetic phenomena as much as possible. At the same time, such material should be phonetically compact with low redundancy[1, 2]. The phonetic phenomena in continuous speech is the key problem in speech recognition. This paper describes the processing of a set of sentences collected from the database of 1993 and 1994 "People's Daily"(Chinese newspaper) which consist of news, politics, economics, arts, sports etc.. In those sentences, both phonetic phenometla and sentence patterns are included. In continuous speech, phonemes always appear in the form of allophones which result in the co-articulary effects. The task of designing a speech database should be concerned with both intra-syllabic and inter-syllabic allophone structures. In our experiments, there are 404 syllables, 415 inter-syllabic diphones, 3050 merged inter-syllabic triphones and 2161 merged final-initial structures in read speech. Statistics on the database from "People's Daily" gives and evaluation to all of the possible phonetic structures. In this sentence set, we first consider the phonetic balances among syllables, inter-syllabic diphones, inter-syllabic triphones and semi-syllables with their junctures. The syllabic balances ensure the intra-syllabic phenomena such as phonemes, initial/final and consonant/vowel. the rest describes the inter-syllabic jucture. The 1560 sentences consist of 96% syllables without tones(the absent syllables are only used in spoken language), 100% inter-syllabic diphones, 67% inter-syllabic triphones(87% of which appears in Peoples' Daily). There are rougWy 17 kinds of sentence patterns which appear in our sentence set. By taking the transitions between syllables into account, the Chinese speech recognition systems have gotten significantly high recognition rates[3, 4]. Problem Solver's Responses According to the Sentence Structures of Mathematical Word Problems (수학 문장제의 문장 구조에 따른 초등학생의 문제해결 반응 비교 분석)

  • This paper has a purpose to find out the important points about linguistic factors suited to the assessment purpose and mathematics teaching/learning that a word-problem sentence has to possess. We also examine the degree of understanding of sentence and the perceptive/emotional reactions of students toward two different kinds of word-problem sentences that have same mathematical contents, but different linguistic structures. The objects of this thesis are 124 students from the third to sixth grade in an elementary school. We execute assessment of simple-sentence-word-problem and complex-sentence-word-problem that have same mathematical contexts, but different linguistic structures. Then we have compared and examined their own process of solving the two types word-problems and we make up questionnaire and have an interview with them. The conclusions are as followings: First, simple-sentence-word-problem is more successful to suggest an information for solving a problem than complex one. Second, it is hard to find the strategy for solving a problem in complex-sentence-word-problem than simple one. Third, students think that suggested information and mathematical knowledge are different according to the linguistic structure in the process of perceiving the information after reading a word-problem. Fourth, in spite of same sentence type, the negative mental reaction is showed greatly to complex-sentence-word-problem even before solving a problem.

  • As dialogue systems are widely required, the research on natural language generation in dialogue has raised attention. Contrary to conventional dialogue systems that reply to the user with a set of predefined answers, a newly developed dialogue system generates them dynamically and trains the answers to support more flexible and customized dialogues with humans. This paper proposes an evolutionary method for generating sentences using interactive genetic programming. Sentence plan trees, which stand for the sentence structures, are adopted as the representation of genetic programming. With interactive evolution process with the user, a set of customized sentence structures is obtained. The proposed method applies to a dialogue-based train booking agent and the usability test demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed method.

English-Korean Machine Translator "Trannie 96" (영한 기계번역기 트래니Trannie 96)

  • The aim of this presentation is to show the structures and characteristics of English-Korean Machine Translator 'Trannie 96' 'Trannie 06' consists of five main engines and various types of dictionaries. With respect to the engines, the English sentences filtered by Pre-processor are tagged and parsed. After the conversion form English sentence structure to Korean one, 'Trannie 96' constructs Korean sentence. As for dictionaries, each engine has more than one optimized dictionaries. The algorithms employed by this machine is based on Linguistic theories, which make it possible for us to produce speedy and accurate translation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to substantially analyse the patterns of complements considering the aspects of not only syntax but also morphology since the concept of complement has been used as a term to analyse the components of a sentence. However, it cannot be denied that there seemed to be limitations due to the partial explanation or different explanations of the same sentence. Thus, this paper aims at dealing with the close relation between sentential components and suffixes to examine the sentence patterns; subject, predicate, object, complement, and adjunct focusing on the terms of complement which has been seen problematic due to incomplete explanations and different interpretations of the same sentence. Finally, this paper synthesises various opinions of many scholars and integrates them to get explicit and practical patterns of complement of a sentence based on not only syntax but also morphology through close relation between sentential components and morphological suffixes.

A Focus-Based Approach to Scope Ambiguity in Japanese

  • This paper puts forward an analysis of scope interactions between Japanese adverbial quantifiers like mainichi 'everyday'and tokidoki 'sometimes'and a negative morpheme nai 'not'on the basis of f(ocus)-structures. In this analysis, three f-structures are assigned to a sentence with an adverbial quantifier and a negative morpheme. One of them represents a negation-wide reading, and the other two represent quantifier-wide readings. Some f-structures, however, are unacceptable due to semantic or pragmatic factors. Different scope behaviors of the two quantifiers mentioned above can then be ascribed to acceptability of f-structures.

  • In this article we present a rapid development of a Korean to English translation system, by the help of general English generator, PENMAN. PENMAN is an English sentence generation system, of which input language is a language specially devised for sentence generation, named Sentence Planning Language(SPL). The language SPL has various features that are necessary for generating sentences, covering both syntactic and semantic features. In this development we integrated a Korean language parser based on dependency grammar and the English sentence generator PENMAN, bridging two systems through a converting module, which converts dependency structures produced by Korean parser into SPL for PENMAN.

Comprehension Processes and Stuctures of Korean Relative Clause Sentence (한국어 관계절 문장의 이해 과정과 구조)

  • Based on the given data if three experiments that measured word-by-word reading times of the Korean relative-clause sentences,parsing strategies and performance structures in comprehending Korean sentences were suggested.First,results of the significantily longer reading time of nouns than verbs suggested that Korean parsing processing would be primarily occurred at nouns.Seond,four parsing strategies were proposed to explain increased reading times,working memory loads,and parallel function effects.Third,performance structures of sentence comprehension were constructed from the interword reading time differences.The proposed strategies and structures seem to account for the patterns of word-by-word reading times of the five types of the Korean relative-clause se various ideas for further experimentation were discussed.

Legal search method using S-BERT

  • In this paper, we propose a legal document search method that uses the Sentence-BERT model. The general public who wants to use the legal search service has difficulty searching for relevant precedents due to a lack of understanding of legal terms and structures. In addition, the existing keyword and text mining-based legal search methods have their limits in yielding quality search results for two reasons: they lack information on the context of the judgment, and they fail to discern homonyms and polysemies. As a result, the accuracy of the legal document search results is often unsatisfactory or skeptical. To this end, This paper aims to improve the efficacy of the general public's legal search in the Supreme Court precedent and Legal Aid Counseling case database. The Sentence-BERT model embeds contextual information on precedents and counseling data, which better preserves the integrity of relevant meaning in phrases or sentences. Our initial research has shown that the Sentence-BERT search method yields higher accuracy than the Doc2Vec or TF-IDF search methods.
