  • The effect of the specifications of a silicon-on-insulator vertical slot optical waveguide on the sensitivity of homogeneous and surface sensing configurations for TE and TM polarization, respectively, was systematically analyzed using numerical software. The specifications were optimized based on the confinement factor and transmission power of the TE-guided mode distributed in the slot. The waveguide sensitivities of homogeneous and surface sensing were calculated according to the specifications of the optimized slot optical waveguide.

  • We report a way to improve the ability of graphene to operate as a gas sensor by applying single stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The sensitivity and recovery of the DNA-graphene sensor depending on the different DNA sequences are analyzed. The different sensor responses to reactive chemical vapors are demonstrated in the time domain. Because of the chemical gating effect of the deposited DNA, the resulting devices show complete and rapid recovery to baseline unlike the bare graphene at room temperature. The application of the pattern recognition technique can increase the potential of DNA-graphene sensors as a chemical vapor classifier.

  • For realizing artificial skin sensing as a final goal, a mono-material pressure-conductive rubber sensor which is also sensitive for temperature is described. Firstly, discimination of the hardness and the thermal property of material using a proposed sensor is presented. Furthermore, a tactile sensor constints of four pressure-conductive rubber sensor to discriminate surface model which imitaties the surface roughness of material is proposed.

  • This paper is to develop an optical ruer displacement sensor for monitoring high speed spindle. Proper magnitude of optical power as well as amplification of output signal are necessary to improve sensitivity of the sensor. In this paper, to meet the need of improvement of the sensor resolution, we choose proper optical power and amplification level through speculating on optical power of a laser diode.

  • We have investigated a temperature sensor on a thermal expansion effect of a fused optical fiber coupler. Both side of the fused tapered region of the coupler were fixed on a metal support to induce the high thermal expansion effect. The sensor showed that the peak coupling wavelengths were shifted to shorted wavelength region with increased of environmental temperature. The sensitivity of the sensor was $0.12nm/^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper demonstrated the performance of a palladium wire hydrogen sensor based on a fiber Bragg grating as a means of developing a quasi-distributed hydrogen sensor network capable of operating at cryogenic temperatures. The new approach employing a fiber Bragg grating based palladium hydrogen sensor described in this study is advantageous over other traditional hydrogen sensors because of the multiplexing capability of fiber Bragg gratings. The sensitivity of the hydrogen sensor at room temperature is approximately 2.5 times that of the hydrogen sensor at cryogenic temperatures.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) which were grown, on the alumina substrate with a pair of comb-type Au electrodes, by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition have been investigated for $NO_2$ gas sensor. The electrical resistance of CNT film decreased with temperature, indicating a semiconductor type of CNT, and also the resistance of CNT sensor decreased with increasing $NO_2$ concentration. Upon exposure to $NO_2$ gas, the electrical resistance of CNT film sensor rapidly decreased within 3 minutes, and then showed a constant value after $20\~30$ minutes. It is found that the sensitivity of CNT sensor has been improved by air oxidation. The CNT sensor oxidized at $450^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes showed higher sensitivity value than that without oxidation by $27\%$, even for a low 250 ppb $NO_2$ concentration at operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. But it needs a recovery time more than 20 minutes for reuse after detection of $NO_2$ gas.

  • With the increasing number of automobiles, the problem of air pollution from the exhaust gases of automobiles has become a critical issue. The principal gases that cause air pollution are nitrogen oxide or NO$_x$(NO and NO$_2$), and CO. Because NO$_x$ gases cause acid rain and global warming and produce ozone(O$_3$) that leads to serious metropolitan smog from photochemical reaction, they must be detected and reduced. Mixtures of WO$_3$ and $In_2O_3$(WO$_3$:$In_2O_3$=10:0, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, and 0:10 in wt.%), which are NO$_x$ gas-sensing materials, were prepared, and thick-film gas sensors that included a heater and a temperature sensor were fabricated. Their sensitivity to NO$_x$ was measured at 250$\sim$400$^{\circ}C$ for NO$_x$ concentrations of 1$\sim$5 ppm. The $In_2O_3$ thick-film sensor showed excellent sensitivity($R_{gas}/R_{air}$=10.22) at 300$^{\circ}C$ to 5-ppm NO. The response time for 70 % saturated sensitivity was about 3 seconds, and the sensors exhibited very fast reactivity to NO$_x$.

  • Sensitivity characteristics of temperature sensor with $Bi_2Mg_{2/3}Nb_{4/3}O_7$ (BMNO) layer were investigated with low frequency noise measurement. Temperature sensor with BMNO layer had high reliability and high sensitivity comparing with conventional MOS type temperature sensor. Annealing temperature variation effects with $600^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ were measured and analyzed. Annealing temperature determines trap distribution and $700^{\circ}C$ annealing sample has different pattern comparing with other samples. Results of low frequency noise can offer the design guide of temperature sensor performance.
