  • Cellulose based electro-active paper(EAPap) is considered as a new smart material which has a potential to be used for biomimetic actuators and sensors. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. When the external stress is applied to EAPap, it can generate the electrical output due to its piezoelectric property. Using piezoelectric behavior of EAPap, we studied the feasibility of EAPap as mechanical strain sensor applications and compared to commercial strain sensor. By measuring the induced output voltage from the thin piezoelectric cellulose EAPap under static and dynamic force, we propose cellulose EAPap film as a potential strain sensor material.

  • In this paper we propose a sensor fusion method for the navigation algorithm which can be used to estimate state vectors such as position and velocity for its motion control using multi-sensor output measurements. The output measurement we will use in estimating the state is a series of known multi-sensor asynchronous outputs with measurement noise. This paper investigates the Extended Kalman Filtering method to merge asynchronous heading, heading rate, velocity of DVL, and SSBL information to produce a single state vector. Different complexity of Kalman Filter, with. biases and measurement noise, are investigated with theoretically data from MOERI's SAUV. All levels of complexity of the Kalman Filters are shown to be much more close and smooth to real trajectories then the basic underwater acoustic navigation system commonly used aboard underwater vehicle.

  • In indoor sensor networks equalization algorithms based on the minimization of Euclidean distance (MED) for the distributions of constant modulus error (CME) have yielded superior performance in compensating for signal distortions induced from optical fiber links, wireless-links and for impulsive noise problems. One main drawback of MED-CME algorithms is a heavy computational burden hindering its implementation. In this paper, a recursive gradient estimation for weight updates of the MED-CME algorithm is proposed for reducing the operations $O(N^2)$ of the conventional MED-CME to O(N) at each iteration time for N data-block size. From the simulation results of the proposed recursive method producing exactly the same results as the conventional method, the proposed estimation method can be considered to be a reliable candidate for implementation of efficient receivers in indoor sensor networks.

  • This paper deals with the development of a contact-type counting device using a piezoelectric polymer film as a sensor. The piezoelectric and vibration characteristics of the film under a bending vibration were investigated theoretically and experimentally. A counting device, which includes filters, an amplifier, an analog-digital converter, and a display, was designed and fabricated. The performance of the piezoelectric polymer sensor was evaluated in the sense of the responses to contact force, contact frequency, and contact speed. The life and the temperature effect were also investigated for the piezoelectric film sensor.

  • In this paper, analysis of the vibration characteristic for the mine detectable test platform is described. The test platform system is the multi-sensor mine detectable vehicle. This multi-sensor mine detectable unit is more efficient detection performance than other conventional methods. The test platform system has five subsystems, the UWB(ultra wide band) sensor scanner, the MD(metal detector) sensor scanner, the ND(neutron detector) sensor scanner, and the detectable vehicle. We perform the vibration tests for the test platform and analyze the vibration characteristic, such as the max displacement, the max deformation and the max Von-Misses stress.

  • To address the need for new intelligent sensing of systems, this study presents a novel strain sensor based on peizoresistivity of carbon nanotube (CNT) and its nanocomposites. Fabrication and characterization of the carbon nanocomposite material are discussed and an electrical model of the CNT strain sensor was derived based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis and strain testing. The dynamic response of the sensor on a vibrating beam was simulated using numerical analysis and it was compared with experimental test. The simulation showed good agreement with the strain response of the actual sensor.

  • In this paper, an optical fiber sensor(OF sensor) utilizing the principal of Sagnac interferometer was proposed to detect the discharge signals which generated from needle-sphere electrode system in insulating oil. The performance of OF sensor was checked by sinusoidal calibration signal generated by PZT acuator at 198kHz. The detected discharge signals consisted of acoustic signal and the electrical noise. The noise signal could be removed by digital low pass filter. It was demonstrated that the OF sensor in this research had a possibility to detect the discharge signals in power apparatus.

  • The stabilization of fiber-optic current sensor has been achieved by using a broadband light source and a Faraday Rotator Glass fiber sensor coil. The very low Photo-elastic constant of the fiber suppressed output variations within ${\pm}0.4[%]$ when mechanical disturbance was applied to the sensor coil. Noise characteristics, with different light sources, have also been analyzed, which experimentally proved that the wider bandwidth source showed the better noise performance.

We have developed a new signal processing method that can distinguish among different materials. The smart sensor was developed for recognition of materials. We estimated the sensing ability of smart sensor with the $R_{SAI}$ method according to frequency changing. Experiments and analysis were executed to estimate the ability to recognize objects according to frequency changing. Sensing ability of smart sensors was evaluated relatively through a new $R_{SAI}$ method. Applications of smart sensors are for finding abnormal conditions of objects (auto-manufacturing), feeling of objects (medical product), robotics, safety diagnosis of structure, etc.etc.
