  • This paper is an experimental work of estimating friction angle of very coarse grained soil such as rubble mound by performing laboratory experiments. Two crushed rocks of rubble mound were used for tests. Triaxial compression tests with drained conditions were performed to measure friction angles of soils prepared by mixing the crushed soil having an identical coefficient of uniformity with different maximum grain size distribution. Centrifuge model experiments with those soils were also performed to measure angle of repose and to estimate friction angle of soil from measuring the slope of slip line in the active stress state. Model tests were carried out by changing the G-levels of 1G and 50G. From triaxial compression tests, the measured value of friction angle of soil is in the range of $41{\sim}57^{\circ}$. The measured value of repose angle is in the range of $32{\sim}35^{\circ}$. The values of friction angle are found not so sensitive to the maximum grain size of soil as long as the coefficient of uniformity is identical. Estimated value of friction angle from measuring the slope of slip line in the active stress state is in the range of $30{\sim}46^{\circ}$. Thus, the estimated angle of friction are found to be greater in the order of the measured angle of repose, the estimated value from the slope of active state, and triaxial compression test results. On the other hand, the measured values of friction angle from triaxial tests were compared with empirical equations, based on the relation between friction angle and void ratio. Equations proposed by Helenelund(l966) and Hansen(1967) found to be relatively reliable to estimate friction angles of soil.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of the shear strength of the unsaturated cohesive soils which has mean characters of sand and clay widely used for banking, I selected soil samples from An-sung district and, against it, performed direct shear test and unconfined compression test changing grain size, compaction energy and moisture content and also performed triaxial compression test under optimum moisture content. The results are as follows; 1.As the passing percent of the No. 200 sieve increased from 23.6% to 56.1%, cohesion increased from 0. 202kg/cm2 to 0. 398kg/cm2 under the direct shear test and from 0.38 kg/cm2 to 1. 05kg/cm2 under the tria4al compression test, internal friction angle decreased from 44. 78$^{\circ}$ to 34. 34$^{\circ}$ under the direct shear test and from 31. 88$^{\circ}$ to 13. 31$^{\circ}$ under the triaxial compression test. 2.Cohesion showed it's maximum value around OMC and internal friction angle showed a tendency to increase according to the decrease of water content but it's increasing ratio was relatively slow. 3.Decreasing ratio of cohesion and internal friction angle was relatively sensitive according to the decrease of compaction energy. 4.The smaller of the vertical stress and the coarser of the grain size of samples, changing of the volume showed a tendency to increase and as the increase of water content, the shear displacement (dh) at failure shear stress ($\tau$f) showed maximum and the $\tau$f-dh curve was gentle. 5.To synthesize the results of the direct shear test and the triaxial compression test, cohesion showed higher under the triaxial compression test and internal friction angle showed a tendeney to appear higher under the direct shear test. It seems that we can get correspondent results by removing the side friction of mold with soils and adjusting the vertical stress and shearing speed under the direct shear test.

  • The sintering process of BSCCO 2223 tapes is a complex process that is very sensitive to parameters, such as temperature, oxygen partial pressure, heating and cooling rate and holding time. During the first heat treatment, 2212 phase of precursor powder is partially transformed into 2223 phase and some residual secondary phases, such as $(Bi,Pb)_2$$Sr_2$CuO/sub y/(2201), $(Ca,Sr)_2$CuO/sub y/(2/1AEC), (Ca,Sr)/sub 14/Cu/sub 24/O/sub 41/(14/24 AEC) etc. The secondary phases are difficult to be removed from the BSCCO 2223 matrix on the heat treatment. These secondary phases degrade the critical current density. In order to minimize the amount and size of alkaline earth cuprate(AEC) particles step heat treatment is applied during the first heat treatment under the varying atmosphere. Experimental results showed that by adapting the step heat treatment process, the amount and particle size of the secondary phases in the final tapes are decreased. Consequently, the BSCCO 2223grain texture and Jc properties are improved.

  • Although anthropogenic disturbance of 20 years duration affects benthic habitats, few studies have examined its effects on the macrobenthic communities of a bay. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of environmental variables on the macrobenthic communities after the construction of the Hwaong dike. Macrobenthos were collected at 22 sites using a Smith McIntyre grab (0.1 $m^2$) in August 2007 and February 2008. Total organic content was very low around the Hwaong dike. Sediment grain size increased from the Hwaong dike to the outer bay. In total, 317 species of macrobenthic fauna were collected and the mean density was 1,155 ind. $m^{-2}$, both of which were higher than the results of previous studies. The dominant species, $Hetermastus$ $filiformis$, known to be a potential pollution indicator, was more abundant near the Hwaong dike. Conversely, species sensitive to organic pollution, such as the polychaete $Ampharete$ $arctica$ and the ophiuroid $Amphioplus$ $squamata$, exhibited higher mean densities in areas distant from the dike. A cluster analysis indicated that the macrobenthic community was divided into two distinct groups: group I near the dike and group II in the outer bay, which were affected by sediment grain size and total organic content. This study suggests that variations in sediment grain size and organic content after dike construction are important factors controlling the macrobenthic community in Asan Bay.

  • We have studied lead-based gapless semiconductors, $PbPdO_2$, which is very sensitive to external parameters such as temperature, pressure, electric field, etc[1]. We have fabricated pure $PbPdO_2$, Co- and Mn-doped $PbPdO_2$ thin films using the pulsed laser deposition. Because of the volatile element of Pb, it is very difficult to grow the films. Note that in case of $MgB_2$, Mg is also volatile element. So in order to enhance the quality of $MgB_2$, some experiments are carried out in annealing with Mg-rich atmosphere [2]. This annealing process with volatile element plays an important role in making smooth surface. Thus, we applied such process to our studies of $PbPdO_2$ thin films. As a result, we found the optimal condition of ex-situ annealing temperature ${\sim}650^{\circ}C$ and time ~12 hrs. The ex-situ annealing brought the extreme change of surface morphology of thin films. After ex-situ annealing with PbO-rich atmosphere, the grain size of thin film was almost 100 times enlarged for all the thin films and also the PbO impurity phase was smeared out. And from X-ray diffraction measurements, we determined highly crystallized phases after annealing. So, we measured electrical and magnetic properties. Because of reduced grain boundary, the resistivity of ex-situ annealed samples changed smaller than no ex-situ sample. And the carrier densities of thin films were decreased with ex-situ annealing time. In this case, oxygen vacancies were removed by ex-situ annealing. Furthermore, we will discuss the transport and magnetic properties in pure $PbPdO_2$, Co- and Mn-doped $PbPdO_2$ thin films in detail.

  • To examine the moisture adsorption and permeability characteristics, weathered granite soils of different degrees of weathering, cultivated upland soils and sands of Han-river were sampled. The results are as follows: 1. In case that the mother rock was same, the pF values under same moisture content decreased according as the grain size of soil became finer by the weathering process. 2. In case that the mother rock was different, the pF value varied by the behavior of clay minerals, and the cultivated upland soils showed more sensitive reaction than sands and fresh granite soils. 3. The pF value changed by the difference of primary moisture content and also influenced by soil structure, testing method and etc. 4. The pF value and compaction curve had close relation, however under same moisture content, the pF value decreased by the increment of density. 5. The permeability depend on the available void ratio between the soil particles according to the degree of weathering, and the pF value of available void water between the soil particles which related directly to permeability was about 3.3 except the void water holded in the soil particles. 6. As the above, the pF value and permeability were differentiated by degree of weathering, primary moisture content, density and etc. Therefore it is considered unreasonable to define uniformly by soil texture.

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the effectiveness of soil cement stabilization about the Song-I in Cheju province. The results are summarized as follows; 1.The increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength according to the increment of cement content was markedly low compared with the weathered granite soil, so the effect of stabilization was low. 2.The moisture content of the sample of Song-I indicates the maximum unconfined compressive strength showed at the 5% or so of dry side than the optimum moisture content and the change of the unconfined compressive strength according to the change of moisture content was not sensitive compared with the weathered granite soil. 3.Generally the primary strength of curing age within 7 days of the sulfate resisting cement was low compared with the normal portland cement and the strength of 28 curing days showed a similar tendency, especially in case of Song-I, and it seemed that the sulfate resisting cement was a little more effective than the normal portland cement. 4.As the unconfined compressive strength of grain size controlled Song-I was low compared with the weathered granite soil, so the rate of weight loss by the durability test was great, therefore it was thought that the durability was weak.

  • A series of laboratory tests (physical and mechanical index and engineering design) were conducted on undisturbed granite soils of CW and RS weathering grades in Korea. From these testes it can be concluded that most of physical and mechanical index values are very sensitive to change in weathering grade from CW to RS. Engineering design tests indicate that the unconfined compressive strength and the shear strength parameters are significantly reduced and that the soil becomes ductile and plastic with increasing weathering and saturation. It was found that weathered granite soils have the special characteristics when water saturated: (i) they significantly lose their shear strength(especially cohesion) and unconfined compressive strength, (ii) they are fragile and their grains break down in water as observed in grain size analysis.

  • It is inevitable to evaluate the life of turbine rotor because the operating periods of power plants need to be extended. For the test, seven kinds of specimens with different degradation levels were prepared by the isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. Magnetic methods utilizing Barkhausen noise coercive force($BN_c$) were applied to detect the degradation caused by thermal aging. Magnetic property of material is related with domain dynamics and that is affected by the microstructure of material. Therefore $BN_c$ is very sensitive to the microstructure change of the material. With the increase of degradation, $BN_c$ was decreased and this phenomenon is considered due to precipitations and grain size. The result was compared with Vickers hardness($H_v$) and coercive force($H_c$) to detect the relative variation, and was related with $H_v$ and YS to estimate the change of the mechanical properties with the degradation.

  • Micro-scale test methods are producing small-sample size where the conventional physical and chemical tests can not be used (high standard deviation, uncertain sampling conditions, low repeatability). Different small-scale test methods were developed recently for determination of physico-chemical, functional, rheological properties of wheat or wheat dough using miniaturized instruments with sophisticated sample preparation/handling and mechanics (RVA, 2 g mixograph, micro-Z-arm mixer, small-scale noodle maker, micro-baking method etc.). The small-scale methodologies can be used as basic research tools or as technology supported measurements and can be also essential in the early selection for quality traits in breeding programs. The milling as a sample preparation step is essential procedure providing good quality flour or semolina samples from small amount of grain (5-10 g) in a reproducible and reliable way. The aim of present study was to use NIR as quality control tool, and to evaluate the recently developed and manufactured micro-scale lab mill (FQC-2000) produced by Inter-Labor Co. Ltd., Hungary. The milling characteristics of the new instrument were compared to other laboratory mills and the effects of milling action on the chemical composition of fractions were analysed. The fractions were tested with both chemical and near infrared spectroscopic methods. The micro-scale milling resulted significantly different yields, particle size distributions and different fractions from compositional point of view. The near infrared spectra were sensitive enough to distinguish the fractions obtained by different milling procedures. Quantitative NIR calibration equations were developed and tested in order to measure the chemical composition of characteristic milling fractions. Special qualification procedure the PQS (Polar Qualification System) method was used for detecting the differences between fractions obtained by macro and micro-milling procedures. The results and the limitations of PQS method in this application will be discussed.
