In this study, a real-time simulation model was developed for tracked vehicles with in-arm type semi-active hydro-pneumatic suspension unit using MATLAB S-functions. Since the vehicle model uses relative coordinates and massless link elements, the developed model has an enhanced analytic time performance. Through the comparison of simulation results with multi-body software(DADS), the vehicle model is verified. A controller using on-off skyhook control algorithm is designed with the pilot-centre]led proportional valve based on conventional damper characteristics. Exploiting the developed tracked vehicle model with other subsystem model such as a controller model, a suspension unit model, and a test road model, computer simulations are carried out. Control simulation results with the developed tracked vehicle model show that the semi-active suspension control system has a better performance than the conventional suspension system.
Computer simulation is carried out for passive, active, and semi-active suspension system. Each RMS and frequency response to road profile input is calculated for comparison and evaluation of the performance. The vibration analysis and active control of the quarter model of a vehicle suspension is studied in order to evaluate the alternative control laws. This paper derives an optimal closed-loop feedback law for the semi-active suspension that justifies the clipped optimal approach.

In general, control performance of the active control system is superior to that of the passive control devices. However, the active system require a large amount of external energy to operate the actuators. Semi-active control systems maintain the reliability of the passive control systems while taking advantage of the adjustability of the active control system. In this research, a semi-active orificed fluid damper having the capacity of about 2 tons was designed and fabricated. It is a two-stage damper with normally open solenoid valve. A series of tests was performed to grasp its performance characteristics. It was also applied to a 6-story steel structure subjected to random and seismic excitations for the confirmation of its validity on structural vibration absorption.
Some of the control systems used in engineering structures that use sensors and decision systems have some time delay reducing efficiency of the control system or even might make it unstable. In this research, in addition to considering the effect of the time delay in vibration control process, predictive control is used to compensate the time delay. A semi-active vibration control approach with the help of magneto-rheological dampers is implemented. In addition to using fuzzy inference system to determine the appropriate control voltage for MR damper, structural behavior prediction system and specifying future responses are also used such that the time delays occurring within control process are overcome. For this purpose, determination of prediction horizon is conducted for one, five, and ten steps ahead for single degree of freedom structures with periods ranging from 0.1 to 4 seconds, subjected to twenty earthquake excitations. The amount of time delay applied to the control system is 0.1 seconds. The obtained results indicate that for 0.1 second time delay, average prediction error values compared to the case without time delay is 3.47 percent. Having 0.1 second time delay in a semi-active control system reduces its efficiency by 11.46 percent; while after providing the control system with structure behavior prediction, the difference in the results for the control system without time delay is just 1.35 percent on average; indicating a 10.11 percent performance improvement for the control system.

Analyzing internal structure, flow rate and dynamic behavior characteristics of electronically controlled shock absorber, damping performance limit is identified to comprise the two reciprocal characteristics of ride comfort and handling safety. Regardless of its lower performance than the active suspension control system, the semi-active suspension control system has been taking interest because of its absolutely higher performance than passive suspension system. Since the pervious studies have been concentrated mostly on analytic aspect and survey on the internal structure of the shock absorber remain insufficient, the main discourse of this paper is focused on analyzing the nonlinear shock absorber which varies the damping force of semi-active suspension system and the dynamic characteristics of the solenoid valve, a sort of pressure valve, and proposing the design factors of importance.
Recent studies integrating vibration control and structural health monitoring (SHM) use control devices and control algorithms to enable system identification and damage detection. In this study real-time SHM is used to enhance structural vibration control and reduce damage. A newly proposed control algorithm, including integrated real-time SHM and semi-active control strategy, is presented to mitigate both damage and seismic response of the main structure under strong seismic ground motion. The semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device is used as semi-active control device in this investigation. The proper stiffness of SAIVS device is obtained using a new developed semi-active control algorithm based on real-time damage tracking of structure by damage detection algorithm based on identified system Markov parameters (DDA/ISMP) method. A three bay five story steel braced frame structure, which is equipped with one SAIVS device at each story, is employed to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The obtained results show that the proposed control algorithm could significantly decrease damage in most parts of the structure. Also, the dynamic response of the structure is effectively reduced by using the proposed control algorithm during four strong earthquakes. In comparison to passive on and off cases, the results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed control algorithm in decreasing both damage and dynamic responses of structure is significantly enhanced than the passive cases. Furthermore, from the energy consumption point of view the maximum and the cumulative control force in the proposed control algorithm is less than the passive-on case, considerably.

A recently developed semi-active control system employing magneto-rheological (MR) fluid dampers is applied to vibration control of a wind excited tall building. The semi-active control system with MR fluid dampers appears to have the reliability of passive control devices and the adaptability of fully active control systems. The system requires only small power source, which is critical during severe events, when the main power source may fail. Numerical simulation studies are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the MR dampers on the third ASCE benchmark problem. Multiple MR dampers are assumed to be installed in the 76-story building. Genetic algorithm is applied to determine the optimal locations and capacities of the MR dampers. Clipped optimal controller is designed to control the MR dampers based on the acceleration feedback. To verify the robustness with respect to the variation of the external wind force, several cases with different wind forces are considered in the numerical simulation. Simulation results show that the semi-actively controlled MR dampers can effectively reduce both the peak and RMS responses the tall building under various wind force conditions. The control performance of the MR dampers for wind is found to be fairly similar to the performance of an active tuned mass damper.

In this paper, the performance of a semi-active suspension system for a passenger car has been investigated. Alternative semi-active suspensions control laws has been compared via simulations. The control laws investigated in this study are : sprung mass velocity feedback control law, sky-hook damping control law, and state feedback control law. Simulation results show that a semi-active suspension has potential to improve ride quality of automobiles.

In this paper, skyhook control of a semi-active ER(Electro-Rheological) damper is investigated. The strength of the ER damper is controlled by a high voltage power supply. This paper deals with a two-degree-of-freedom suspension using the damper with ERF for a quarter vehicle system. The control law for semi-active suspensions modeled in this study is developed using skyhook and Linear Quadratic Regulator(LQR) optimal control method. Computer simulation and experimental results show that the semi-active suspension with ERF damper has good performances of ride quality.

In this paper, a modified skyhook control for the semi-active Macpherson suspension system is investigated. A new model for the semi-active type suspension, which incorporates the rotational motion of the unsprung mass, is introduced and an output feedback control law using the skyhook control method is derived. The gains in the skyhook controller are adaptively adjusted by estimating the road conditions. Because two vertical acceleration sensors, one for the sprung mass and another for the unsprung mass, are used rather than using the angle sensor for the rotational motion of the control arm, the relative velocity of the rattle space is filtered using the acceleration signals. For testing the control performance, the actual damping force has been incorporated via the hardware-in-the-loop simulations. The performances of a passive damper and a semi-active damper are compared. Simulation results are provided.
