  • Location-based services are a recent concept that integrates a mobile device's location with other information in order to provide added value to a user. Although Location-based Services provide users with comfortable information, it is a complex task to manage and share heterogeneous and numerous data in decentralized environments. In this paper, we propose the Semantic LBS Model as one of the solution to resolve the problem. The Semantic LBS Model is a LBS middleware model that includes an ontology-based data model for LBS POI information and its processing mechanism based on Semantic Web technologies. Our model enables POI information to be described and retrieved over various domain-specific ontologies based on our proposed POIDL ontology. This mechanism provide rich expressiveness, interoperability, flexibility in describing and using information about POls, and it can enhance POI retrieval services.

  • With the increasing demand for interoperability among existing learning resource systems in order to enable the sharing of learning resources, such resources need to be annotated with ontologies that use different metadata standards. These different ontologies must be reconciled through ontology mediation, so as to cope with information heterogeneity problems, such as semantic and structural conflicts. In this paper, we propose an ontology-mapping technique using Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) to generate semantic mapping rules that integrate learning resources from different systems and that cope with semantic and structural conflicts. Reasoning rules are defined to support a semantic search for heterogeneous learning resources, which are deduced by rule-based inference. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach enables the integration of learning resources originating from multiple sources and helps users to search across heterogeneous learning resource systems.

  • Most of the terminologies used in medical domain is not intended to be applied directly in clinical setting but is developed to integrate the terms by defining the reference terminology or concept relations between the terms. Therefore, it is needed to develop the subsets of the terminology which classify categories properly for the purpose of use and extract and organize terms with high utility based on the classified categories in order to utilize the clinical terms conveniently as well as efficiently. Moreover, it is also necessary to develop and upgrade the terminology constantly to meet user's new demand by changing or correcting the system. This study has developed a mapping tool that allows accurate expression and interpretation of clinical terms used for medical records in electronic medical records system and can furthermore secure semantic interoperability among the terms used in the medical information model and generate common terms as well. The system is designed to execute both 1:1 and N:M mapping between the concepts of terms at a time and search for and compare various terms at a time, too. Also, in order to enhance work consistency and work reliability between the task performers, it allows work in parallel and the observation of work processes. Since it is developed with Java, it adds new terms in the form of plug-in to be used. It also reinforce database access security with Remote Method Invocation (RMI). This research still has tasks to be done such as complementing and refining and also establishing management procedures for registered data. However, it will be effectively used to reduce the time and expenses to generate terms in each of the medical institutions and improve the quality of medicine by providing consistent concepts and representative terms for the terminologies used for medical records and inducing proper selection of the terms according to their meaning.

  • The Semantic Web is a new technology that attempts to achieve effective retrieval, automation, integration, and reuse of web resources by constructing knowledge bases that are composed of machine-readable definitions and associations of resources that express the relationships among them. To have this kind of Semantic Web in place, it is necessary to have the following infrastructures: capability to assign unchangeable and unique identifier (URI) to each resource, adoption of XML namespace concept to prevent collision of element and attribute names defined by various institutions, widespread use of RDF to describe resources so that diverse metadata can be interoperable, use of RDF schema to define the meaning of metadata elements and the relationships among them, adoption of DAML+OIL that is built upon RDF(S) to increase reasoning capability and expressive power, and finally adoption of OWL that is built upon DAML+OIL by removing unnecessary constructors and adding new ones based on experience of using DAML+OIL. The purpose of this study is to describe the central concepts and technologies related to the Semantic Web and to discuss the benefits of metadata interoperability based on XML/RDF schemas and the potential applications of diverse ontologies.

  • In order to cope with the rapidly changing product development environment, individual manufacturing enterprises are forced to collaborate with each other through establishing a virtual organization. In collaboration, designated organizations work together for mutual gain based on product data interoperability. However, product data interoperability is not fully facilitated due to semantic inconsistency among product data models of individual enterprises. In order to overcome the semantic inconsistency problem, this paper proposes a reference ontology, Reference Domain Ontology(RDO), and a methodology for product data interoperability with semantic consistency using RDO. RDO describes semantics of product data model and metamodel for all application domains in a virtual organization. Using RDO, application domains in a virtual organization can easily understand the product data models of others. RDO is agile and temporal such that it is created with the formation of a virtual organization, copes with changes of the organization, and disappears with the vanishment of the organization. RDO is built by a hybrid approach of top-down using a upper ontology and bottom-up based on the merging of ontologies of application domains in a virtual organization. With this methodology, every domain in a virtual organization can achieve product data model interoperability without model transformation.

  • Recently, as the Geospatial Web is combined with the Semantic Web in order to keep pace with the recent trends of information technology emphasizing interoperability, intelligence and individualization, the Geo Semantic Web was proposed, which is an intelligent geographical information Web service technology that can provide users with suitable information by connecting and integrating various types of spatial information and extensive aspatial information on the Web efficiently. For the Geo Semantic Web service, we need to develop Geo Ontology processing technologies that enable computers to process knowledge and information scattered around in the Web environment automatically. However, standards for Geo Ontology processing technologies have nod been established yet, and standardization organizations and various groups and agencies are conducting relevant studies. This paper analyzed various base theories and technologies related to Geo Ontology and developed a Geo Semantic Web system. The Geo Semantic Web system comprises Query Processing Manager that analyzes and processes Geo Semantic queries and manages sessions, Ontology Manager that generates and queries Geo Ontology and extracts spatial/aspatial data, and Clients. Finally, this paper proved the utility of the Geo Semantic Web system by applying it to a hypothetical scenario where Geo Semantic queries are required.

  • It has lately been recognized that the sharing and exchanging of the research results information is the critical factor to improve the research productivity. So many institutions are planning or developing the information systems which provide the research information services for researcher. But it has very difficulty in integrating the research resources information due to the dispersion and heterogeneity in data sources, and semantic and structural difference in describing data. We propose the semantic web based methodology and conceptual framework for raising the interoperability of metadata about research results information, which will support the integration of the distributed research data for information services in the end. Finally we proposed the conceptual architecture of research information service system which shows the main components, the functional requirements, and the principal and design direction at implementing the system.

  • The current technological revolution pushes forward the innovation in the library information systems. This study proposes functional requirements and an architectural reference model of Semantic Library, recognized as a prototype of next-generation library information systems, that is a seamless convergence of the library information systems and the Internet technologies. Semantic Library can realize semantic interoperability and integration based on ontology and metadata, and also renovate information services for users with openness, sharing, participation and collaboration. Semantic Library will be effectively implemented by means of service-oriented architecture and the logical structure of FRBR. In this study, a reference model of Semantic Library consisting of 6 horizontal layers and 3 vertical elements is presented as a next-generation model of library information systems.

  • The 'NIST Framework and Road Map for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards' proposes an architecture framework to secure the direction of development and standard interoperability of smart grid and provides a list of identified standard, standard cyber security strategies, and certification framework. In particular, SEP 2.0 and OpenADR 2.0 are the examples. SEP 2.0 and OpenADR 2.0 can functionally link HEMS and Smart Grid, but interoperability standards between the two protocols are not planned in above document. The OpenADR Alliance also announced that work is underway to define mapping tables for interoperability between OpenADR 2.0 and SEP 2.0, but no information is yet available. Therefore, In this paper, in developing energy efficiency improvement HEMS, we propose a mapping model that supports syntactic and semantic founded interoperability between SEP 2.0 and OpenADR 2.0b for ICT grid convergence based on the standard specification document of each protocol and confirmed through an example of the semantic mapping function based on the demand response service scenario.

  • This paper describes how to compose multimedia ontology for integrating/searching different types of multimedia databases. For this, we build integrated ontology based on MPEG-7 Multimedia Description Schemes (MDS), which is a representative standard for specifying multimedia contents, and the concept of TV-Anytime and re-express it using Web Ontology Language (OWL). In addition, we explain interoperability of the developed integrated ontology with other types of ontology with different concepts. Lastly, this paper describes the method of semantic search and retrieval using the integrated multimedia ontology.
