Application of Self-Organizing Map for the Characteristics Analysis of Rainfall-Storage and TOC Variation in a Lake (호소수의 강우-저류량 및 TOC변동 특성분석을 위한 자기조직화 방법의 적용)

  • It is necessary to analysis the data characteristics of discharge and water quality for efficient water resources management, aggressive alternatives to inundation by flood and various water pollution accidents, the basic information to manage water quality in lakes and to make environmental policy. Therefore, the present study applied Self-Organizing Map (SOM) showing excellent performance in classifying patterns with weights estimated by self-organization. The result revealed five patterns and TOC versus rainfall-storage data according to the respective patterns were depicted in two-dimensional plots. The visualization presented better understanding of data distribution pattern. The result in the present study might be expected to contribute to the modeling procedure for data prediction in the future.

  • 3D object recognition independent of translation and rotation using an ultrasonic sensor array, invariant moment vectors and SOFM(Self Organizing Feature Map) neural networks is presented. Using invariant moment vectors of the acquired 16×8 pixel data of square, rectangular, cylindric and regular triangular blocks, 3D objects could be classified by SOFM neural networks. Invariant moment vectors are constant independent of translation and rotation. The recognition rates for the training and testing data were 95.91% and 92.13%, respectively.

  • Studies on modeling the rainfall-runoff relationship which shows nonlinear trend strongly use artificial neural networks theory not only for the prediction but also for the characteristics analysis of the data used by pattern classification. For the pattern classification, the results from Self-Organizing Map (SOM) mention that the map size and array for the SOM training have significantly influenced on the SOM performance. Since there is no deterministic method or theoretical equation to determine the number of rows and columns for the map size, hexagonal array is generally used for the map array. Therefore, this study present a determination of the optimized map structure for the rainfall-runoff analysis in Naju station considering the map size and array simultaneously which can represent the classified characterization of rainfall-runoff relationship. The result showed that the map size of 20$\times$16 hexagonal array with 8-clustered patterns was selected as an appropriate map structure for rainfall-runoff analysis in Naju station.

  • A recommender system supports people in making recommendations finding a set of people who are likely to provide good recommendations for a given person, or deriving recommendations from implicit behavior such as browsing activity, buying patterns, and time on task. We proposed new recommender system which combined SOM(Self-Organizing Map) neural networks with the Collaborative filtering which most recommender systems hat applied First, we segmented user groups according to demographic characteristics and then we trained the SOM with people's preferences as ito inputs. Finally we applied the classic collaborative filtering to the clustering with similarity in which an recommendation seeker belonged to, and therefore we didn't have to apply the collaborative filtering to the whose data set. Experiments were run for EachMovies data set. The results indicated that the predictive accuracy was increased in terms of MAE(Mean-Absolute-Error).

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive image watermarking algorithm in DWT domain by using HVS(human Visual system) and SOM(Self-Organizing Map) among neural networks. HVS can be described in terms of two properties of HVS: brightness and texture sensitivity. The SOM is used to obtain the local characteristics of image, Therefore, the suitable strength and length of embedded watermark is determined by using HVS and SOM. The experimental results show that proposed method provides a suitable strength and length of watermark and has good perceptual invisibility and robustness for various attacks.

  • Many control applications using Neural Network need a priori information about the objective system. But it is impossible to get exact information about the objective system in real world. To solve this problem, several control methods were proposed. Reinforcement learning control using neural network is one of them. Basically reinforcement learning control doesn't need a priori information of objective system. This method uses reinforcement signal from interaction of objective system and environment and observable states of objective system as input data. But many methods take too much time to apply to real-world. So we focus on faster learning to apply reinforcement learning control to real-world. Two data types are used for reinforcement learning. One is reinforcement signal data. It has only two fixed scalar values that are assigned for each success and fail state. The other is observable state data. There are infinitive states in real-world system. So the number of observable state data is also infinitive. This requires too much learning time for applying to real-world. So we try to reduce the number of observable states by classification of states with Self-Organizing Map. We also use neural dynamic programming for controller design. An inverted pendulum on the cart system is simulated. Failure signal is used for reinforcement signal. The failure signal occurs when the pendulum angle or cart position deviate from the defined control range. The control objective is to maintain the balanced pole and centered cart. And four states that is, position and velocity of cart, angle and angular velocity of pole are used for state signal. Learning controller is composed of serial connection of Self-Organizing Map and two Multi-layer Feed-Forward Neural Networks.

  • Various methods have been applied for the research to model the relationship between rainfall-runoff, which shows a strong nonlinearity. In particular, most researches to model the relationship between rainfall-runoff using artificial neural networks have used back propagation algorithm (BPA), Levenberg Marquardt (LV) and radial basis function (RBF). and They have been proved to be superior in representing the relationship between input and output showing strong nonlinearity and to be highly adaptable to rapid or significant changes in data. The theory of artificial neural networks is utilized not only for prediction but also for classifying the patterns of data and analyzing the characteristics of the patterns. Thus, the present study applied self?organizing map (SOM) based on Kohonen's network theory in order to classify the patterns of rainfall-runoff process and analyze the patterns. The results from the method proposed in the present study revealed that the method could classify the patterns of rainfall in consideration of irregular changes of temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall. In addition, according to the results from the analysis the patterns between rainfall-runoff, seven patterns of rainfall-runoff relationship with strong nonlinearity were identified by SOM.

  • In this study, researchers developed the est algorithm for artificial defects in the semic packages and performed to it by pattern recogn technology. For this purpose, this algorithm was I that researcher made software with matlab. The so consists of some procedures including ultrasonic acquistion, equalization filtering, self-organizing backpropagation neural network. self-organizing ma backpropagation neural network are belong to metho neural networks. And the pattern recognition tech has applied to classify three kinds of detective pa semiconductor packages. that is, crack, delaminat normal. According to the results, it was found estimative algorithm was provided the recognition r 75.7%( for crack) and 83.4%( for delamination) 87.2 % ( for normal).

Improvement of Self Organizing Maps using Gap Statistic and Probability Distribution

  • Clustering is a method for unsupervised learning. General clustering tools have been depended on statistical methods and machine learning algorithms. One of the popular clustering algorithms based on machine learning is the self organizing map(SOM). SOM is a neural networks model for clustering. SOM and extended SOM have been used in diverse classification and clustering fields such as data mining. But, SOM has had a problem determining optimal number of clusters. In this paper, we propose an improvement of SOM using gap statistic and probability distribution. The gap statistic was introduced to estimate the number of clusters in a dataset. We use gap statistic for settling the problem of SOM. Also, in our research, weights of feature nodes are updated by probability distribution. After complete updating according to prior and posterior distributions, the weights of SOM have probability distributions for optima clustering. To verify improved performance of our work, we make experiments compared with other learning algorithms using simulation data sets.

The Comparison of Pulled- and Pushed-SOFM in Single String for Global Path Planning (전역경로계획을 위한 단경로 스트링에서 당기기와 밀어내기 SOFM을 이용한 방법의 비교)

  • This paper provides a comparison of global path planning method in single string by using pulled and pushed SOFM (Self-Organizing Feature Map) which is a method among a number of neural network. The self-organizing feature map uses a randomized small valued initial-weight-vectors, selects the neuron whose weight vector best matches input as the winning neuron, and trains the weight vectors such that neurons within the activity bubble are move toward the input vector. On the other hand, the modified SOFM method in this research uses a predetermined initial weight vectors of the one dimensional string, gives the systematic input vector whose position best matches obstacles, and trains the weight vectors such that neurons within the activity bubble are move toward or reverse the input vector, by rising a pulled- or a pushed-SOFM. According to simulation results one can conclude that the modified neural networks in single string are useful tool for the global path planning problem of a mobile robot. In comparison of the number of iteration for converging to the solution the pushed-SOFM is more useful than the pulled-SOFM in global path planning for mobile robot.
