Longitudinal studies have shown mixed findings on the association between body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem among adolescents. This study examined the longitudinal, reciprocal influences between body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem among Korean pre- and early adolescents by using nationally representative longitudinal panel data from the Korean Youth Panel Study (KYPS). Analyses based on 2,230 participants indicated that girls' body image dissatisfaction was significantly higher than boys'. The trajectory of body image dissatisfaction increased sharply during pre- and early adolescence, but stabilized afterwards for both boys and girls. Self-esteem deteriorated rapidly initially, but began to recover as adolescent girls and boys matured. Structural equation modeling showed that reciprocal influences between body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem were detected for boys. Body image dissatisfaction among girls predicted self-esteem during the entire period, while the opposite direction from self-esteem to body image dissatisfaction emerged two years later. The present study found that, during pre- and early adolescence, body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem develop in a circular fashion by forming a vicious cycle. Implications for the development of intervention and prevention programs are discussed in consideration of age and gender.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the change trajectory and latent class types of self-esteem in first to fourth grade elementary school students. For the purpose, the Korean Children's Panel data were analyzed using potential growth model and the growth mixture model. As the results, the linear change model was selected as the most appropriate model. The change trajectory was found to increase slightly as the grade increased. In addition, four latent class groups were derived through: 'high level-maintenance,' 'low level-increase,' 'high level-decrease,' and 'low level-maintenance.' Most children were in the 'high level-maintenance' group, followed by 'high level-decrease,' 'low level-increase,' and 'low level-maintenance' groups. Therefore, based on the results of the study, we suggest that educational institutions and local communities pay attention to trends in elementary school students' self-esteem and provide appropriate support for students in each class.
The present study examines the development of self-esteem from young adulthood to old age, as well as predictors of change in self-esteem over time. The eight waves of Korean Welfare Panel Data(KOWEPS) were used for analyses, and a nationally representative sample of 15,511 individual aged 19 years and above were included. The multilevel growth curve model was specified to address the research questions. The result shows that the self-esteem trajectory differed across different age groups with those in early adulthood and adulthood showed an increasing linear trajectories while the old age showed a declining slope. Furthermore, predictors of changes in self-esteem also differed across the age groups that while depression and relationship variables were constant in predicting self-esteem change for all three age groups, some variables such as marital status, poverty status, and employment status predicted individuals in certain age groups. Such results demonstrate the need to understand and examine the change in self-esteem at the individual level.
There are two competing models explaining the causal relationship of depression and self-esteem, and they are cognitive vulnerability model and the scar model. Cognitive vulnerability model explains that low self-esteem poses as a risk factor for development of depressive symptoms/depression while the scar model asserts that the experiences of depression scars the cognitive function of individuals, resulting in negative self-perception. This study was set out to test two models on Korean adults, and to identify factors that are associated with depression and self-esteem relationship. The first four waves (wave 1~4) of the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) were used for analyses, and latent growth curve modeling was employed to examine the relationship. The findings show that the relationship was reciprocal, one affecting the growth trajectory of another over a four year period. Furthermore, education, poverty status, health status, and satisfaction with social relationships were found to be significantly associated with both depression and self-esteem trajectories. Implications for practice and theory are provided.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changing trajectory of self-esteem and to explore contemporaneous and lagged effects of social supports(family, friends, and teacher) of 4th graders in elementary school to 9th graders in middle school. The subjects were 1,296 multiethnic students, who participated in the Multicultural Children and Adolescents Panel Study(MCAPS) from 2011 to 2016. The results of piecewise growth function showed that students' self-esteem was increased during upper grade in elementary school but soon deceased during middle school. Individual differences were found at initial, 1st and 2nd changing status. Students with higher level at initial status in self-esteem showed less increased pattern during elementary school but greater decreased pattern during middle school. In addition, supports from family and teacher showed contemporaneous effects across all 6 years while supports from friends showed such effects only for 5 years except 9th grade. Lagged effects of family were found in elementary school and significant lagged effects with supports from friends were found at 6th and 8th grade. The results of this study imply that the social support of family, friends, and teacher has an important role to encourage the self-esteem of multicultural adolescents.

This study utilized latent growth curve modeling to investigate the trajectories of adolescent life satisfaction changes in middle and high school students. The effects of self-esteem, career identity, school learning activity, gender, and household earnings on life satisfaction changes were examined. Data was obtained from the Korea Child Youth Panel Survey (KYCPS), a longitudinal study following students for 7 years. Year 3-6 data was utilized. Results found that the life satisfaction trajectory resulted as a quadratic model in which individual differences were significant. Second, school learning activity used as a time variant variable had a positive significant effect on life satisfaction each year. Third, gender and self-esteem as time invariant variables had significant effects on initial levels while self-esteem had effects on the slope and quadratic change. Further implications and research issues are discussed.

This study had two aims (1) to explore the trajectory of family functioning (flexibility and cohesion) in the mothers' perspective and classify it according to the development of their child, and (2) to examine the differences in children's self-esteem as well the internal and external behavioral problems based on the latent groups. A total of 1,348 mothers and their children who participated in the survey in 2013 through to 2017 were analyzed. The group was subdivided into low incremental, average incremental, average-above incremental, and high unchanged groups according to the flexibility, and into low incremental, average incremental, decremental, high incremental, and above-high unchanged groups in terms of cohesion. From 2015 to 2017, the self-esteem of elementary school-age children showed differences depending on the flexibility and cohesion of family functioning; children in the high-unchanged group of flexibility and the above-high unchanged group of cohesion showed high self-esteem. Behavior problems of early childhood and elementary school-age children varied according to the latent classes of flexibility and the cohesion of family functioning. Children in low incremental and average incremental groups of flexibility and low incremental, average incremental, and decremental groups of cohesion showed more internal and external behavioral problems. These findings suggest that family functioning has significant effects on the psychological aspects of children.
This study examined patterns of delinquent behavior trajectory from late childhood to early adolescence and examined relationships between patterns of trajectory and individual, family, and school factors. Youth delinquent behavior trajectories were examined by mixed growth models using data from the 2nd to 5th year surveys of the Seoul Panel Study of Children. Relationships between patterns and effect factors were examined by multinominal logit models. Four patterns emerged: non-delinquency (80%); rapidly accelerating delinquency (3.3%); decelerating delinquency (6.0%); and moderately accelerating (10.7%) groups. Contacts with a delinquent peer group had persistent effects on more serious delinquent behavior trajectories. Increased levels of self-esteem and school achievement prevented increase in delinquent behaviors; close relationships with parents and parental supervision caused decrease in delinquent behaviors.
This study aims to identify the multiple trajectories of depressive symptoms and the characteristics of each trajectory group among the elderly. This study uses five waves of longitudinal data from the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KWPS, 2006-2010). Subjects were older adults aged 60 and over who had completed at least three waves between 2006 and 2010. A total of 4,181 respondents were analyzed. The latent growth mixture model and the multiple logistic regression model were mainly used for data analysis. The major findings were as follows: After controlling for the variables of gender, age, education, marital status, self-assessed health, and poverty, this study identified four different trajectory classes: stable low depressive symptoms (71.8%), high but decreased depressive symptoms (10.6%), moderate but increased depressive symptoms (7.9%), and an increased, then a decreased pattern of depressive symptoms (9.7%). The characteristics of theses trajectories as compared to previous studies were a lower percentage of 'stable low depressive symptoms', no 'persistently high depressive symptoms', and higher level of depressive symptoms. Also, the elderly in the stable low trajectory group had better health status, higher self-esteem and a good relationship with family members, having longer working periods, and more living in non-poverty. In addition, chronic health problems, loss of spouse, and household income differentiated the increased and then decreased pattern from the low stable pattern. Also, age and public pension differentiated the moderated but increased pattern from the low stable pattern. Based on the findings of this study, the researchers suggested political and practical implications for reducing depressive symptoms in later life.
The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to identify different adolescent smoking trajectories in Korea; and 2) to examine predictors of those smoking trajectories within a social developmental frame. Data were from the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS), a longitudinal study of 3,449 youths followed since 2003. Using semi-parametric group-based modeling, four smoking trajectories were identified: non initiators, late onsetters, experimenters, and escalators. Multinomial logistic regressions were then used to identify risk and protective factors that distinguish the trajectory groups from one another. Among non smokers at age 13, late onsetters were distinguished from non initiators by a variety of factors in every ecological domain. Among youths who already smoked at age 13, escalators who increased their smoking were distinguished from experimenters who almost desisted from smoking by age 17 by self-esteem and academic achievement. Finally, implications for youth welfare practice from this study were discussed.
