The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using low-amperage electrical treatment (LAET) as a selective bacteriocide. Mixtures containing Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were treated with different electric current intensities and for different times. The results showed that at 263 mA, treating bacteria for 100 ms eliminated all V. parahaemolyticus colonies. Although LAET reduced the populations of the three microorganisms, V. parahaemolyticus was more injured by LAET than S. aureus and E. coli when treated at the same processing conditions.

The microwave of 2450 MHz, generated by a household cooking oven, was evaluated for its applicability to melt various rehydrated media and to remove dissolved oxygen from tubed media for anaerobic culture. The effect on the sterilization of E. coli in selective media was also evaluated. The following results were obtained. 10 The microwave oven was useful in saving time for melting media and in eliminating heat and combustion gas from the laboratory, which were inevitable by-products in the conventional flame method. 2) Dissolved oxygen could be removed without boiling over by exposing the tubes of anaerobic culture medium after putting them in a wire basket in a beaker with water. 30 The count of E. coli during the melting of MacConkey and EMB agar were similar to those treated with open flame. The microwave treatment was not considered a possible mean to replace autoclaving even in these selective media.
Sodium hydroxide solutions are often employed as sterilization agents in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, the chloride content is considered as a critical impurity. In this study, an electrochemical method was developed to remove chloride ions (Cl-) through the oxidative deposition of AgCl on a Ag anode. The Cl- content in the commercially available 50% w/w NaOH solution employed was approximately 100 mg Cl-/kg NaOH. As the OH- content is approximately 18,000 times higher than the Cl- content, the formation of AgCl may be expected to be thermodynamically less favorable than the formation of Ag2O. However, activation energies for AgCl and Ag2O formation have been reported to be approximately 3.8 and 31.2 kJ/mol, respectively, and indicate that AgCl formation is favored. AgCl can be selectively produced by controlling the anode potential. Here, the Cl- concentration was reduced to less than 50 mg Cl-/kg NaOH when an anode potential of 0.18 or 0.19 V vs. Hg/HgO (reference electrode) was applied for one hour at 50℃. XRD analysis and visual monitoring of the Ag anode confirmed the oxidative deposition of AgCl on the anode surface as well as the electrochemical desalination of the concentrated NaOH solution.

Dermatophytes can invade in keratinized tissues and cause dermatophytosis [1] that rank among the most widespread and common infectious diseases world-wide. Although several systemically and topically administered drugs with activities against these fungi are available, still complete eradication of some of these infections, is difficult and relapses and remissions are often observed [2,3]. In addition, some people are allergic to many of the available drugs which add complications even more. Therefore, the search for novel, selective and more effective therapy is always required and it may help the clinicians to choose the correct treatment for their patients. Non-thermal plasmas primarily generate reactive species and recently have emerged as an efficient tool for medical applications including sterilization. In this study, we evaluated the ability of non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma for the inactivation of clinical isolates of Trichophyton genera, Trichophyton mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes) and Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum), which cause infections of nails and skin and, are two of the most frequently isolated dermatophytes [4]. Our results showed that DBD plasma has considerable time dependent inactivation potential on both T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum in-vitro. Furthermore, the mechanisms for plasma based T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum inactivation and planning for in-vivo future studies will be discussed.
