  • In this paper, we propose a robust detection scheme of OSTBCs with channel estimation errors over time-selective fading channels. Channel estimation errors are inevitable over time-selective fading channels and even small channel estimation errors dramatically degrade the performance of space-time block coding schemes. Therefore, it is desired to investigate the effect of channel estimation errors on the performance of the proposed detection scheme compared with the existing detection scheme. The proposed detection scheme minimizes noise enhancement and impact of channel estimation errors which occur in an existing detection scheme. It is shown by simulations that the proposed detection scheme performs better than the existing detection scheme over time-selective fading channels.

  • Several works help make sliding window object detection fast, nevertheless, computational demands remain prohibitive for numerous applications. This paper proposes a fast object detection method based on three strategies: cascade classifier, selective window search and fast feature extraction. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the compared methods and achieves both high detection precision and low computation cost. Our approach runs at 17ms per frame on 640×480 images while attaining state-of-the-art accuracy.

  • Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) can easily compromised from attackers because it has the limited resource and deployed in exposed environments. When the sensitive packets are occurred such as enemy's movement or fire alarm, attackers can selectively drop them using a compromised node. It brings the isolation between the basestation and the sensor fields. To detect selective forwarding attack, Xiao, Yu and Gao proposed checkpoint-based multi-hop acknowledgement scheme (CHEMAS). The check-point nodes are used to detect the area which generating selective forwarding attacks. However, CHEMAS has static probability of selecting check-point nodes. It cannot achieve the flexibility to coordinate between the detection ability and the energy consumption. In this paper, we propose the control method for the number fo check-point nodes. Through the control method, we can achieve the flexibility which can provide the sufficient detection ability while conserving the energy consumption.

  • Active thermography is being used since several years for remote non-destructive testing. It provides thermal images for remote detection and imaging of damages. Also, it is based on propagation and reflection of thermal waves which are launched from the surface into the inspected component by absorption of modulated radiation. For energy deposition, it use external heat sources (e.g., halogen lamp or convective heating) or internal heat generation (e.g., microwaves, eddy current, or elastic wave). Among the external heat sources, the ultrasound is generally used for energy deposition because of defect selective heating up. The heat source generating a thermal wave is provided by the defect itself due to the attenuation of amplitude modulated ultrasound. A defect causes locally enhanced losses and consequently selective heating up. Therefore amplitude modulation of the injected ultrasonic wave turns a defect into a thermal wave transmitter whose signal is detected at the surface by thermal infrared camera. This way ultrasound thermography(UT) allows for selective defect detection which enhances the probability of defect detection in the presence of complicated intact structures. In this paper the applicability of UT for fast defect detection is described. Examples are presented showing the detection of defects in PCB material. Measurements were performed on various kinds of typical defects in PCB materials (both Cu metal and non-metal epoxy). The obtained thermal image reveals area of defect in row of thick epoxy material and PCB.

  • The ion selective microelectrodes (ISME) have been applied to observe the continuous profiles of NO3-N and NH4-N in bulk solutions or biofilms. In order to evaluate the performance and applicability of ion concentration measuring system, the characteristics, such as slope of calibration curve, detection limit and potentiometric selectivity coefficient were investigated. The slopes of calibration curve showed high degree of correspondence for each target ion concentrations. And the detection limits of nitrate and ammonia ion selective microelectrode were 10-4.7 M and 10-4.4 M, respectively. These ion selective microelectrodes were proved that their own performance could be maintained for 16 days after making. NO3-N and NH4-N selective microelectrodes were also adapted to detect the continuous ion profiles of cilia media packed MLE (Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) process. And the monitored nitrate and ammonia ion profiles with the ion selective microelectrode were stable and well corresponded to the results with conventional ion chromatograph. However, the electric potential was unstable until 8 hr because of the unknown noise. The tip shape and performance of the ion selective microelectrode was stably kept over 2 days continuous monitoring.

  • This paper proposes a robust detection scheme for quasi-orthogonal space-time block code over time-selective fading channels. The proposed detector performs interference cancellation and decision feedback equalization to remove the inter-antenna interference and inter-symbol interference when the channel varies from symbol to symbol. Cholesky factorization is used on the channel Gram matrix after performing interference cancellation to obtain feed forward equalizer and feedback equalizer. It is shown by simulations that the proposed detection scheme outperforms the conventional detection schemes and the exiting detection schemes to time-selectivity.

  • Pediococci selective medium (PSM) supplemented with ampicillin (A) reported as valid for the detection and enumeration of pediococci included in foods and animal feed was evaluated for the selective detection of the genus Pediococcus in kimchi. PSM is based on the complex basal medium MRS supplemented with cysteine hydrochloride, vancomycin, novobiocin, and nystatin. In the medium evaluation with known species, the growth inhibition of leuconostocs, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus curvatus, Oenococcus oeni, and Streptococcus thermophilus was not confirmed. In the application of kimchi samples on the selective medium, leuconostocs, P. pentosaceus, Weissella koreensis, Lb. curvatus, Lactobacillus brevis, and Lactobacillus sakei were detected. PSM+A was proved to be not applicable for the detection of pediococci in kimchi.

  • Electronic nose has been developed for detection of various hazardous molecules, especially vapor organic compounds (VOCs), by adsorption and desorption phenomenon. However, although conventional electronic noses have provided many advantages such as simple detection and high sensitivity, they still need advanced technologies for selective specificity in real samples. In this review, we provide bionanoelectronic noses with natural receptors for selective odorant detection. This review includes from fabrication of natural receptors and conducting nanomaterials to bioelectronic noses. We also discussed their perspective applications for the future at the conclusion.

  • This paper presents new coherent and non-coherent detection methods for the IEEE 802.15.4a low-rate ultra-wideband physical layer with forward error correction (FEC) coding techniques. The coherent detection method involving channel estimation is based on the correlation characteristics of the preamble signal. A coherent receiver uses novel iterated selective-rake (IT-SRAKE) to detect 2-bit data in a non-line-of-sight channel. The non-coherent detection method that does not involve channel estimation employs a 2-bit data detection scheme using modified transmitted reference pulse cluster (M-TRPC) methods. To compare the two schemes, we have designed an IT-SRAKE receiver and a MTRPC receiver using an IEEE 802.15.4a physical layer. Simulation results show the performance of IT-SRAKE is better than that of the M-TRPC by 3-9 dB.

  • In this paper, We propose the selective detection scheme based on pulse repetition considering Bit Error Rate (BER) performance and complexity of noncoherent Ultra Wide Band (UWB) systems. To consider system complexity, the proposed scheme transmits the UWB signals by pulse repetition at the transmitter, like the conventional Pulse Repetition Coding (PRC). However, to effectively improve BER performance of the system the proposed scheme performs selective detection by estimating the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the received pulse-repeated signal at the receiver. Hence, the proposed scheme effectively improves BER performance of the noncoherent UWB systems without increase of the system complexity, as compared to the conventional PRC algorithm.
