The objectives of this study are to research the frequency of depression symptom in patients with voice disorders and to investigate parameters associated with depression from voice evaluation. A hundred ninety six patients(106 males and 90 females) who had been diagnosed with voice disorders first in their lifetime were selected. All the patients were examined by laryngeal stroboscopy. For depression and voice study, personal interview, acoustic and aerodynamic analysis, voice handicap index(VHI), reflux symptom index(RSI), and beck depression index(BDI) were done respectively. Mild to severe BDI were seen in 26.2%(52 patients) of the whole patients. A BDI mean score of female patients was $8.8{\pm}7.5$ which was higher than that of male patients($5.6{\pm}6.6$), the difference observed being statistically significant(p<0.001). In the acoustic analysis, the score of sent_duration parameter was increasing in the patients with depression, which was significantly higher than the score of the patients without depression(p<0.05). In the addition, the scores of VHI and RSI were higher in the patients with depression(p<0.001). Our findings suggest that the prevalence of depression in patients with voice disorders is related to female, speaking velocity, and self-questionnaire. This result can be used for psychologically based approach to therapy.
Purpose: This study was a descriptive study to compare of quality of life, relationship with CVA patients, and family support between caregiver of patient with CVA in western and oriental medicine. Method: Total 270 caregivers for CVA patients were selected from western medicine department (114) and oriental medicine department (156) at K hospital in Seoul. The instrument tools utilized in this study were quality of life, Family support, Caregiver's relationship with patients, daily activity. Collected data were analyzed by $X^2$-test, t-test using SPSS Windows 12.0 Program. Result: The result are as follows: 1) There was no significant difference in quality of life between caregivers of patients with CVA in western and oriental medicine(t=.26, p=.792). 2) There was significant difference in relationship with patients(t=2.64, p=.009) and family support(t=2.12, p=.035) before onset of disease between caregivers of patients with CVA in western and oriental medicine. Conclusion: As a result, caregivers of oriental medicine with CVA patients showed closer relationship with patients before the onset of disease and higher family support compare to caregivers of western medicine with CVA patients.
It has been believed that the increased release of free oxygen radicals ($O_2^-,H_2O_2$, and $OH^-$) might be a factor in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase(GSH-PX) and catalase can protect the tissue damage from the $H_2O_2$. In order to investigate the GSH-PX and catalase activity in the blood plasma and red blood cells(RBCs) of the patients with periodontitis, 19 patients who had good general health, attachment loss more than 6 mm and bone loss were selected as periodontitis group, 7 patients who had severely inflamed gingiva were selected as gingivitis group, and 15 volunteers with good general and periodontal health were selected as normal group. 17 of 26 patients were performed scaling and root planing to reduce the gingival inflammation for gingivitis and periodontitis groups, and were selected as posttreatment group. After blood plasma and RBCs were collected and separated 1 ml of peripheral blood from each subject, GSH-PX activity in blood plasma and RBCs was measured by the same method that Stefan et al. did, and catalase activity in RBCs was measured by the same method that Beers et al. did. The difference of GSH-PX and catalase activity between normal, gingivitis, and periodontitis groups was statistically analyzed by ANOVA with SPSS/PC+ program, and the difference between pretreatment and posttreatment groups was analyzed by Student t-test. The results were as follows : 1. GSH-PX activity in blood plasma was significantly lower in the gingivitis group($0.8683{\pm}0.0658$), periodontitis group($0.7130{\pm}0.1333$) than in the normal group($1.0241{\pm}0.0801$)(p<0.05), and GSH-PX activity in RBCs was significantly lower in the gingivitis groupt. $0.8156{\pm}0.1167$), periodontitis group($0.7533{\pm}0.1185$) than in the normal group($l.1963{\pm}0.2044$)(P<0.05), but there was no statistical significance in the difference of GSH-PX activity in RBCs between the gingivitis group and periodontitis group(p>0.05). 2. Catalase activity in RBCs was siginficantly lower in the periodontitis group($117.34{\pm}35.01$) than in the normal group($l52.38{\pm}32.09$)(p<0.05). 3. GSH-PX activity in blood plasma was significantly increased in the posttreatment groupe $1.0376{\pm}0.2820$) compared to the pretreatment group(0.7608 0.1600) (p<0.05), and GSH-PX activity in RBC was significantly increased in the posttreatment group($1.0421{\pm}0.2330$) compared to the pretreatment group($0.7728{\pm}0.1210$)(p<0.05). 4. There was no statistical significance in the difference of catalase activity in RBCs between the pretreatment group($112.04{\pm}43.65$) and posttreatment group($l33.41{\pm}39.16$)(p>0.05).The results, within the limits of the present experiment, suggest that the lowered activity of GSH-PX and catalase in blood plasma and RBCs may be related with periodontopathogenesis.
Clothing for hospitalized patients is very important because they wear it while they suffer from various kinds of pain and treatments. Therefore, the clothing for patients has to be comfortable and functional as well as well designed. Also correct sizes, suitable materials and convenient fastening devices are features to be considered for proper patient's clothing. However the currently used patient's clothing is provided without sufficient considerations for patient's needs, and is more concerned with price competitiveness. The purpose of this survey was to find out which design and functional features of patient's clothing are favored by patients, doctors and nurses. The results will be useful to develop improved patient's clothing. Based on the results, the following suggestions for improved patient's clothing are made. 1. Gender differentiation and a greater variety of size codes are required for better fit. 2. Depending on various treatments, different functional design features have to be applied. 3. Aesthetic needs should be satisfied for the psychological comfort of patients. 4. Materials should be selected considering required physical properties such as washing duration, dimensional stability and contaminant prevention.
Purpose: We investigated to identify the effect of robo-horseback riding exercise (RHRE) on trunk muscle activity ratios for patients with low back pain. Methods: Twelve patients with low back pain and twelve healthy adults were recruited for this study. Subjects performed the RHRE with the neutral spine position. The amplitude of electromyography activity was recorded from the selected trunk muscles (internal oblique [IO], rectus abdominis [RA], multifidus [MF], the thoracic part of the iliocostalis lumborum [ICLT]). The ratios of the relative local muscle activity to the global muscle activity in abdominal and lumbar parts were calculated. Results: There were significant differences in the change values of the IO/RA and the MF/ICLT between low back pain (LBP) patients and healthy adults. The IO/RA ratio and the MF/ICLT ratio showed significant increase in LBP patients after training. Conclusion: The RHRE improved the trunk muscle activity ratio in patients with low back pain. The information presented here is important for investigators who use lumbar stabilization exercises as a rehabilitation exercise.
Excision of the metastatic pulmonary sarcoma or carcinoma in the selected cases is now the accepted and the most effective method of treatment. From January 1978 to July 1987, 14 patients with metastatic lung cancer were treated surgically at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Catholic University Medical College. Ages ranged from 26 years to 68 years [mean=38.0 years]. Primary sites were uterus in 6 patients, colorectum in 2, sarcoma of extremities in 2, and 1 case of pancreas, kidney, skin and melanoma of hand. Fourteen posterolateral thoracotomies were done and resected the 36 metastatic masses in 14 patients. Surgical mortality was none. The performed procedures of resection were as follows; lobectomy with wedge resection in 2, lobectomy in 3, segmentectomy in 1 and wedge resection in 8. Eleven patients were received radiotherapy or chemotherapy, or both postoperatively. Among the 14 patients, there were 5 survivors. They are 6, 7, 21, 35, and 63 months postoperatively. Among them, 9 patients were dead. Within one year in 2, two years in 6, and three years in l.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to review the factors related to serious dental diseases in dental clinic patients to provide basic data on health and oral health improvement. Methods : This study included 257 patients who visited dental clinics located in Gyeonggi-do. For the survey method, patients filled out questionnaires, and their dental examination charts were reviewed. The subjects of this study were selected using convenience sampling. Surveys were done with a self-entry questionnaire. Results : Serious dental diseases were more likely to be found in men than in women, in married subjects than in single subjects, in obese subjects than in normal-weight subjects, in subjects with xerostomia and in subjects who did not receive regular oral examinations and scaling. Conclusions : In order to promote oral health, individual efforts by dental clinic patients should be made along with the implementation of oral health improvement programs and policies.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the nutritional status and dietary intake of gastrectomized cancer patients. For this study, from 1993. 1 to 1993. 8, 50 postoperative gastric cancer patients were selected to examine anthropometric and laboratory data(Body Weight, Body Fat, serum Albumin, Total Lympocyte count), and dietary intake related symptoms. The results were 1) All anthropometric and laboratory data were significantly deteriorated by gastrectomy(s-Albumin, TLC. Body Fat : p<0.001). Weight loss of gastrectomized patients was 8.23$\pm$3.72% from admission to discharge. 2) In many gastrectomized cancer patients, preoperative dietary intake was decreased by abdominal discomfort, indigestion, early satiety, and anorexia. 3) Postoperative energy intake was 602$\pm$158㎉, and it is correspond to 31.18$\pm$.90% of daily energy requirement(1918$\pm$236㎉). The cause of poor oral intake is mostly fear, abdominal distension and fullness, and early satiety. In consideration of the fact that an inadequate energy intake was the main cause of the decreasing nutritional status, a careful nutritional care and dietary education is necessry after gastrectomy.
Cancer patients frequently experience malnutrition. Cancer and cancer therapy effects nutritional status through alterations in the metabolic system and reduction in food intake. In the present study, fifty seven cancer patients were selected as subjects from the oncology ward of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Silchar, India. Evaluation of nutritional status of cancer patients during treatment was carried out by scored Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). The findings of PG-SGA showed that 15.8% (9) were well nourished, 31.6% (18) were moderately or suspected of being malnourished and 52.6% (30) were severely malnourished. The prevalence of malnutrition was highest in lip/oral (33.33%) cancer patients. The study showed that the prevalence of malnutrition (84.2%) was high in cancer patients during treatment.
Hospice is defined by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO, USA) and WHO, as a program of care that provides comprehensive medical, nursing and support services to dying patients and their family. Despite its broad definition, however, hospice care in Korea has been focused mostly on terminal cancer patients. Thus hospice eligibility for patients with advanced cancer is relatively easier to predict than those with other fatal chronic illnesses such as heart, lung, renal or liver diseases, and dementia. This makes it more difficult for patients and families to prepare for death and gain full benefits of hospice care. This article introduces the medical guidelines for selected non-cancer patients who are expected to live for only six months, this making it possible for patients, who are nearing the end of life, to avoid unwarranted suffering.
