This paper introduces a new steel jacketing method for reinforced concrete columns with lap splice and evaluates its performance by a series of axial tests of concrete cylinders. At first, 45 concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying the design compressive strengths of 21, 27 and 35 MPa and, then, the part of them was jacketed with two-split-steel jackets under lateral confining pressure. The parameters in the first test were the steel jacket's thickness and the existence of adhesive between steel and concrete surface. In the second test, whole steel jackets were used to wrap cylinders with lateral pressure. Also, a double-layer jacket consisted of two steel plates was introduced; a cylinder was jacketed by two steel plates one after another. The effect of the new method was verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests for plain and jacketed cylinders. The steel jacket built following the new method showed good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of the jacketed cylinders with respect to the plain cylinders. The thicker steel jackets showed the more increased compressive strength, and the ductility at failure depended on the welding quality on steel jackets. The adhesive between steel and concrete surface reduced the confining effect of the steel jackets. The whole jacket showed more ductile behavior than the two-split jackets. The double-layered jackets were estimated to possess an equal performance to that of a single steel jacket having the same thickness of the double-layered jacket. Finally, the experimental results were compared with the constitutive model of steel-jacketed concrete; which showed a good agreement between the experimental results and the models.

This study introduced a new method to retrofit RC columns with lap splice that do not have enough ductility during an earthquake. The new method used mechanical external pressure and split steel plates around the RC columns. The introduced method does not require grouting the gap between jacket and concrete surface. In this study, 45 concrete cylinders were manufactured with varyingstrengths and part of them was retrofitted with split steel jackets under a lateral confining stress. The effect of the new method was verified by comparing the results from the compressive tests of retrofitted and unretrofitted cylinders. The steel jacket that was built following the new method showed good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of concrete cylinders. The thicker steel jackets showed larger compressive strength, however, the ductility at failure depends on their welding quality.

Civil structures should be designed with the lowest cost and longest lifetime possible and without service failure. The efficient and sustainable use of materials in building design and construction has always been at the forefront for civil engineers and environmentalists. Timber is one of the best contenders for these purposes particularly in terms of aesthetics; fire protection; strength-to-weight ratio; acoustic properties and seismic resistance. In recent years, timber has been used in commercial and taller buildings due to these significant advantages. It should be noted that, since the launch of the modern building standards and codes, a number of different structural systems have been developed to stabilise steel or concrete multistorey buildings, however, structural analysis of high-rise and multi-storey timber frame buildings subjected to lateral loads has not yet been fully understood. Additionally, timber degradation can occur as a result of biological decay of the elements and overloading that can result in structural damage. In such structures, the deficient members and joints require strengthening in order to satisfy new code requirements; determine acceptable level of safety; and avoid brittle failure following earthquake actions. This paper investigates performance assessment and damage assessment of older multi-storey timber buildings. One approach is to retrofit the beams in order to increase the ductility of the frame. Experimental studies indicate that Sprayed Fibre Reinforced Polymer (SFRP) repairing/retrofitting not only updates the integrity of the joint, but also increases its strength; stiffness; and ductility in such a way that the joint remains elastic. Non-linear finite element analysis ('pushover') is carried out to study the behaviour of the structure subjected to simulated gravity and lateral loads. A new global index is re-assessed for damage assessment of the plain and SFRP-retrofitted frames using capacity curves obtained from pushover analysis. This study shows that the proposed method is suitable for structural damage assessment of aged timber buildings. Also SFRP retrofitting can potentially improve the performance and load carrying capacity of the structure.

Previous research has shown that steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are efficient lateral force-resisting systems against both wind and seismic loads. A properly designed SPSW can have high initial stiffness, strength, and energy absorption capacity as well as superior ductility. SPSWs have been commonly designed with unstiffened and stiffened infill plates based on economical and performance considerations. Recent introduction and application of corrugated plates with advantageous structural features has motivated the researchers to consider the employment of such elements in stiffened SPSWs with the aim of lowering the high construction cost of such high-performing systems. On this basis, this paper presents results from a numerical investigation of the hysteretic performance of SPSWs with trapezoidally corrugated infill plates. Finite element cyclic analyses are conducted on a series of flat- and corrugated-web SPSWs to examine the effects of web-plate thickness, corrugation angle, and number of corrugation half-waves on the hysteretic performance of such structural systems. Results of the parametric studies are indicative of effectiveness of increasing of the three aforementioned web-plate geometrical and corrugation parameters in improving the cyclic response and energy absorption capacity of SPSWs with trapezoidally corrugated infill plates. Increasing of the web-plate thickness and number of corrugation half-waves are found to be the most and the least effective in adjusting the hysteretic performance of such promising lateral force-resisting systems, respectively. Findings of this study also show that optimal selection of the web-plate thickness, corrugation angle, and number of corrugation half-waves along with proper design of the boundary frame members can result in high stiffness, strength, and cyclic performances of such corrugated-web SPSWs.
Multi-Axial Testing System (MATS) is a 6-DOF loading system located at National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) in Taiwan for advanced seismic testing of structural components or sub-assemblages. MATS was designed and constructed for a large variety of structural testing, especially for the specimens that require to be subjected to vertical and longitudinal loading simultaneously, such as reinforced concrete columns and lead rubber bearings. Functionally, MATS consists of a high strength self-reacting frame, a rigid platen, and a large number of servo-hydraulic actuators. The high strength self-reacting frame is composed of two post-tensioned A-shape reinforced concrete frames interconnected by a steel-and-concrete composite cross beam and a reinforced concrete reacting base. The specimen can be anchored between the top cross beam and the bottom rigid platen within a 5-meter high and 3.25-meter wide clear space. In addition to the longitudinal horizontal actuators that can be installed for various configurations, a total number of 13 servo-hydraulic actuators are connected to the rigid platen. Degree-of-freedom control of the rigid platen can be achieved by driving these actuators commanded by a digital controller. The specification and information of MATS in detail are described in this paper, providing the users with a technical point of view on the design, application, and limitation of MATS. Finally, future potential application employing advanced experimental technology is also presented in this paper.

In this study, tests were performed to analyze the feasibility of using the ground stabilizer from recycled resources such as blast furnace slag powder as filling material of prebored piles. For this, specimens were prepared by applying 70% and 83% of the general water/binder ratio of the filling material of prebored piles. And compression test, model test, and shaking table test were performed to determine the compressive strength, skin friction on the surface between prebored pile and filling material, and seismic performance of ground stabilizer. As a result of the tests, the compressive strength exceeded the relevant domestic standards, and the skin friction was equivalent to that of ordinary portland cement. In addition, the amount of vertical and horizontal displacement caused by earthquakes was found to be much smaller than the domestic standard. Therefore, when considering the test results comprehensively, it is judged that the feasibility of using a ground stabilizer from recycled resources as filling material for prebored pile is sufficient.

This study examined the effect of various arrangement methods for forming peripheral closed hoops in the jacket section on the axial behavior of section enlargement strengthening columns. Four types of peripheral closed hoops arranged in the jacket section were prepared as follows: 1) Closed connection of prefabricated bar units (column P); 2) V-clip installation across the overlapped legs of channel-type bars (column V); 3) Use of glass fiber mesh for an alternative of steel bars (column F); and 4) combination of prefabricated bar units and glass fiber mesh (column PF). The V-clip is designed to form the closed hoops in the jacket section using the overlapped channel-type bars, preventing the opening of the channel bar legs. The glass fiber mesh is to examine the feasibility to apply for closed hoops in the jacket section as an alternative for steel bars, considering the easy construction. In the jacket section of all the strengthened columns, V-ties were arranged for supplementary ties, avoiding the interruption of the existing column. The axial stiffness and strength of the strengthened columns were insignificantly affected by the arrangement methods of closed hoops in the jacket section. The axial ductility ratio of the strengthened columns P, V, and PF was enhanced more than twice of that measured in the non-seismic existing column. However, the column F exhibited a lower ductility than the other strengthened columns because of the fracture of the mesh at the ultimate strength of the column. The V-clip approach was favorable to enhance the ductility of the strengthened column, preventing the opening of the legs of channel-type bars.
The maximum drifts are important to the seismic evaluation of steel buildings and connections, but the information can hardly be obtained from the post-earthquake field investigation. This research studies the feasibility of using the loss rate of bolt pretension as an earthquake damage predictor. Full-scale tests were made on four steel connections using bolted-web-welded-flange details. One connection was unreinforced (UN), another was reinforced with double shear plates (DS), and the other two used reduced beam sections (RBS). The preinstalled strain gauges were used to control the pretensions and monitor the losses of the high-strength bolts. The results showed that the loss rate of bolt pretension was highly related to the damage of the connections. The pretensions lost up to 10% in all the connections at the yield drifts of 0.5% to 1%. After yielding of the connections, the pretensions lost significantly until fracture occurred. The UN and DS connections failed with a maximum drift of 4 %, and the two RBS connections showed better ductility and failed with a maximum drift of 6%. Under the far-field-type loading protocol, the loss rate grew to 60%. On the contrary, the rate for the specimen under near-fault-type loading protocol was about 40%. The loss rate of bolt pretension is therefore recommended to use as an earthquake damage predictor. Additionally, the 10% and 40% loss rates are recommended to predict the limit states of connection yielding and maximum strength, respectively, and to define the performance levels of serviceability and life-safety for the buildings.

Advanced nonlinear effective stress constitutive models are started to be frequently used in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) site response analysis for assessment of porewater generation and liquefaction potential in soft soil deposits. The emphasis of this research is on the assessment of the implementation of this category of models at the element stage. Initially, the performance of a coupled porewater pressure (PWP) and constitutive models were evaluated employing a catalogue of 40 unidirectional cyclic simple shear tests with a variety of relative densities between 35% and 80% and effective vertical stresses between 40 and 80 kPa. The authors evaluated three coupled constitutive models (PDMY02, PM4SAND and PDMY03) using cyclic direct simple shear tests and for decide input parameters used in the model, procedures are recommended. The ability of the coupled model to capture dilation as strength is valuable because the studied models reasonably capture the cyclic performance noted in the experiments and should be utilized to conduct effective stress-based 1D and 2D site response analysis. Sandy soils may become softer and liquefy during earthquakes as a result of pore-water pressure (PWP) development, which may have an impact on seismic design and site response. The tested constitutive models are mathematically coupled with a cyclic strain-based PWP generation model and can capture small-strain stiffness and large-strain shear strength. Results show that there are minor discrepancies between measured and computed excess PWP ratios, indicating that the tested constitutive models provide reasonable estimations of PWP increase during cyclic shear (ru) and the banana shape is reproduced in a proper way indicating that dilation and shear- strain behavior is well captured by the models.
Extended end-plate connections(EEPC) are a type of connection applied in Pre-Engineered Building structures comprising beam-column connections of steel structures or tapered members. Extended end-plate connections(EEPC) show different behavioral characteristics owing to the influence of plate thickness, gauge distance of high strength bolt, diameter of high strength bolt frame, and the number of high strength bolts. In the USA and Europe, extended end-plate connections(EEPC) are applied in beam-column connections of steel structures in various forms; however, these are not widely applied in structures in Korea. This can be attributed to the fact that the proposal of design strength types for extended end-plate connections(EEPC), proposal of connection specifications, evaluation of seismic performance, and are not being performed appropriately. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the domestic application of Unstiffened extended endplate connections. To realize this, nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted on a 12-mm thick Unstiffened extended endplate connections.
