Proper reservoir characterization is an integral part of formation evaluation, reserve estimation and planning of field development. Seismic inversion is a widely employed reservoir characterization tool that provides various rock properties of reservoir intervals. This study presents results of the inversion studies including Geostatistical Inversion carried out on the gas fields, offshore Myanmar. Higher resolution and multiple models can be produced by Geostatistical Inversion using input data such as pre-stack seismic data, well logs, petrophysical relationships and geological inferences for example reservoir shape and lateral extent. Detailed reservoir characterization was required for the development plan of gas fields, and the Geostatistical Inversion studies served as a basis for integrated geological modeling and development well planning.
Seismic attributes are often used to identify lithology and evaluate reservoir properties. However, interpretation based only on structural attributes and without knowledge of the Vp/Vs ratio can limit the ability to evaluate changes in heavy oil reservoirs. These limitations are often due to less obvious impedance differences. In order to investigate pieces of evidence of a heavy-oil shaly-sand reservoir from seismic data, besides geochemistry, we studied seismic attributes and characterized the reservoir using seismic stack data and well logging data. The study area was the Muglad rift basin in South Sudan. We conducted a seismic complex analysis to evaluate the target reservoir. To delineate the frequency responses of the different lithological units, we applied the spectral decomposition method to the target reservoir. The most unexpected result was continuous bands of strong seismic reflectors in the target reservoir, which extended across the borehole. Spectral decomposition analysis showed that the low-frequency zone of 25 Hz dominant frequency was consistent with instantaneous attributes. This approach can identify lithology, reveal frequency anomalies, and filter the stacked section into low- and high-frequency bands. The heavy-oil reservoir zones exhibited velocity attenuation and the amplitude was strongly frequency dependent.
In general, well log and core data have been utilized for reservoir characterization. These well data can provide valuable information on reservoir properties with high vertical resolution at well locations. While the seismic surveys cover large areas of field but give only indirect features about reservoir properties. Therefore it is possible to estimate the reservoir properties guided by seismic data on entire area if a relationship of seismic data and well data can be defined. Seismic attributes calculated from seismic surveys contain the particular reservoir features, so that they should be extracted and used properly according to the purpose of study. The method to select the suitable seismic attributes among enormous ones is needed. The stepwise regression and fuzzy curve analysis based on fuzzy logics are used for selecting the best attributes. The relationship can be utilized to estimate reservoir properties derived from seismic attributes. This methodology is applied to a synthetic seismogram and a sonic log acquired from velocity model. Seismic attributes calculated from the seismic data are reflection strength, instantaneous phase, instantaneous frequency and pseudo sonic logging data as well as seismic trace. The fuzzy curve analysis is used for choosing the best seismic attributes compared to sonic log as well data, so that seismic trace, reflection strength, instantaneous frequency, and pseudo sonic logging data are selected. The relationship between the seismic attribute and well data is found out by the statistical regression method and estimates the reliable well data at a specific field location derived from only seismic attributes. For a future work in this study, the methodology should be checked an applicability of the real fields with more complex and various reservoir features.
Reservoir Characterization (RC) using 3-D seismic attributes analysis can provide properties of the oil sand reservoirs, beyond seismic resolution. For example, distributions and temporal bed thicknesses of reservoirs could be characterized by Spectral Decomposition (SD) and additional seismic attributes such as wavelet classification. To extract physical properties of the reservoirs, we applied 3-D seismic attributes analysis to the oil sand reservoirs in McMurray formation, in BlackGold Oilsands Lease, Alberta Canada. Because of high viscosity of the bitumen, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology will be necessarily applied to produce the bitumen in a steam chamber generated by Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). To optimize the application of SAGD, it is critical to identify the distributions and thicknesses of the channel sand reservoirs and shale barriers in the promising areas. By 3-D seismic attributes analysis, we could understand the expected paleo-channel and characteristics of the reservoirs. However, further seismic analysis (e.g., elastic impedance inversion and AVO inversion) as well as geological interpretations are still required to improve the resolution and quality of RC.
Rock physics serves as a useful tool for seismic reservoir characterization and monitoring by providing quantitative relationships between rock properties and seismic data. Rock physics models can predict effective moduli for reservoirs with different mineral components and pore fluids from well-log data. The distribution of reservoirs and fluids for the entire seismic volume can also be estimated from rock physics models. The first part of this report discusses the Voigt, Reuss, and Hashin-Shtrikman bounds for effective elastic moduli and the Gassmann fluid substitution. The second part reviews various contact models for moderate- to high-porosity sands. In the third part, constant-cement model, known to work well for the sand that gradually loses porosity with deteriorating sorting, was applied to the well-log data from an oil field in the North Sea. Lastly, the rock physics template constructed from the constant-cement model and the results from the prestack inversion of 2D seismic data were combined to predict the lithology and fluid types for the sand reservoir of this oil field.
This study includes structural analysis of the northern Pattani Basin, areal description of depositional facies, and their spatial relationships using 3-D seismic and well data. Well log data indicate that the representative depositional facies of the studied intervals are sandy, fluvial, channel-fill facies encased in shaly floodplain deposits. Seismic responses were predicted from a synthetic seismogram using a model of dominant depositional facies. Peak-to-trough amplitude and instantaneous frequency seismic attributes are used in depositional facies interpretation. Three Intervals A, B and C are interpreted on the successive stratal surfaces. The shallowest interval, A, is the Quaternary transgressive succession. Each stratal surface showed flow pattern variation of fluvial channel facies. Two transgressive cycles were identified in interval A. Interval B also indicated fluvial facies. Depositional facies architectures are described by interpreting seismic attributes on the successive stratal surfaces.
Petrophysical parameters such as porosity and fluid saturation which provide useful information for reservoir characterization could be estimated by rock physics model (RPM) using seismic velocity and resistivity. Therefore, accurate P-wave velocity and resistivity information have to be obtained for successful estimation of the petrophysical parameters. Compared with the individual inversion of electromagnetic (EM) or seismic data, the joint inversion using both EM and seismic data together can reduce the uncertainty and gives the opportunity to use the advantages of each data. Thus, more reliable petrophysical properties could be estimated through the joint inversion. In this paper, for the successful estimation of petrophysical parameters, we proposed an effective method which applies a grid-search method to find the porosity and fluid saturation. The relations of porosity and fluid saturation with P-wave velocity and resistivity were expressed by using RPM and the improved resistivity distribution used to this study was obtained by joint inversion of seismic and EM data. When the proposed method was applied to the synthetic data which were simulated for subsea reservoir exploration, reliable petrophysical parameters were obtained. The results indicate that the proposed method can be applied for detecting a reservoir and calculating the accurate oil and gas reserves.

The role of precise prediction of subsurface fluids and discrimination among them cannot be ignored in reservoir characterization and petroleum prospecting. A suitable rock physics model should be build for the extraction of valuable information form seismic data. The main intent of current work is to present a rock physics model to analyze the characteristics of seismic wave propagating through a cracked porous rock saturated by a three phase fluid. Furthermore, the influence on wave characteristics due to variation in saturation of water, oil and gas were also analyzed for oil and water as wet cases. With this approach the objective to explore wave attenuation and dispersion due to wave induce fluid flow (WIFF) at seismic and sub-seismic frequencies can be precisely achieved. We accomplished our proposed approach by using BISQ equations and by applying appropriate boundary conditions to incorporate heterogeneity due to saturation of three immiscible fluids forming a layered system. To authenticate the proposed methodology, we compared our results with White's mesoscopic theory and with the results obtained by using Biot's poroelastic relations. The outcomes reveals that, at low frequencies seismic wave characteristics are in good agreement with White's mesoscopic theory, however a slight increase in attenuation at seismic frequencies is because of the squirt flow. Moreover, our work crop up as a practical tool for the development of rock physical theories with the intention to identify and estimate properties of different fluids from seismic data.
In this paper, we will introduce rock physics modeling technique, which interrelate reservoir properties with seismic properties, and apply the technique to the Donghae-1 gas reservoir. From well-log data analysis, we obtained velocityporosity (Vp-$\phi$) relations for each formation. These relations can used to predict porosity from seismic data. In addition, we analyzed permeability data, which were obtained from core measurements and computational rock physics simulations. We then obtained permeability-porosity ($\kappa-\phi$) relations. Combining $\kappa-\phi$ with Vp-$\phi$ relations, we finally present quantitative Vp-$\kappa$ relations. As to Vp-$\phi$ modeling, we found that the degree of diagenesis and clay contents increase with depth. As to Vp-$\kappa$ relations, though \kappa-\phi relations are almost identical for all formations, we could obtain distinct Vp-$\kappa$ relations due to Vp-$\phi$ variations. In conclusion, the rock physics modeling, which bridges between seismic properties and reservoir properties, can be a very robust tool for quantitative reservoir characterization with less uncertainty.

The Aquistore project is the world's first commercial capture, transportation, utilization and storage project of post-combustion $CO_2$ from a coal-fired thermo electric power plant, and the proposed storage is a saline aquifer at a depth of about 3,500 m. Deep saline aquifer, compared to hydrocarbon reservoir, provides the great volumetric potential for storage of $CO_2$ anywhere in the world, therefore the research results from the project may be exported globally to other sites. Geological $CO_2$ storage characterization for saline aquifer instead of hydrocarbon reservoir needs to estimate the geophysical properties of subsurface geology. This study calculated the geophysical property of water-saturated formation by applying amplitude variation analysis developed from oil and gas exploration. We correlated horizon tops at the well logs to seismic traveltime of 1,815 and 1,857 ms as Winnipeg and Deadwood formations. Gradient analysis from seismic traces showed correlation coefficient of 45 - 81 % on amplitude variation with respect to incident angle. Crossplot of intercept and gradient shows the inverse proportional trend which represents typical water saturated sediments. Product attribute of intercept and gradient described the base of wet sediment. Poisson's ratio change attribute increased at the top of target area satisfying with wet sediment and decreased at the top of basement in a dry rock bed.
