To understand the current seismic activity and regional tectonic status in and around Gyeongsang basin, Korea Institute of Geology, Mining, and Materials(KIGAM) has performed the earthquake monitoring around the Gyeongsang basin since early 1980's with portable analog seismic instruments for about two months every year. As a part of POSEIDON project, Korea-Japan joint observation around gyeongsang basin in 1991 and 1992, was performed using by temporary seismic station. KIGAM has been continuously operated nine short-period 3-components digital seismic stations since the end of 1994. During the observation period, 247 earthquakes were analyzed and their magnitude was less than 4.5. In general, we could not find any relationship between seismic activity and known surface geological features. But the epicenters were rather concentrated with NW-SE direction. The most active seismicity was found in Gyeongbuk Gyeongjugun Seokeupri and Hyodongri, and Yeongilgun Janggiri and Guryongpo in land, and in three region along the east coast which are 10km and 30km east off from Gampo and 30km east off from Jongja in offshore.

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources(KIGAM) is operating Wonju Korea Seismic Research Station(KSRS), 29 regional seismic research stations and 5 Korea-China joint seismic stations in China. Also KIGAM is operating Korea Earthquake Monitoring System (KEMS) to archive the real-time data stream and to determine event parameters (epicenter, origin time, and magnitude) by the automatic processing and analyst review. To do this, KEMS used KIGAM's regional seismic network and other institute's network in a near real-time base. From Dec. 1, 2001 to Nov. 30, 2002, 3,827 seismic events were analyzed in a automatic processing procedure and finally 3,437 events were analyzed by analyst and archived. But problem is this event catalog includes not only natural earthquake, but also artificial events produced by the blast. More than 80 % events were concentrated in daytime and many events were concentrated in the confirmed blast sites, Pyeongyang, Pocheon, Yeongjong-do, Donghae city, etc. Because these artificial events are a major potential cause of error when estimating the seismicity of a specific region, discrimination procedure has to be developed in the first place.
Indonesia has had seismic codes for earthquake-resistant structures designs since 1970 and has been updated five times to the latest in 2019. In updating the Indonesian seismic codes, seismic hazard maps for design also update, and there are changes to the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). Indonesian seismic design uses the concept of building performance levels consisting of Immediate occupancy (IO), Life Safety (LS), and Collapse Prevention (CP). Related to this performance level, cases still found that buildings were damaged more than their performance targets after the earthquake. Based on the above issues, this study aims to analyze the performance of base isolation design on existing target buildings and analyze the seismic fragility for a case study in Indonesia. The target building is a prototype design 8-story medium-rise residential building using the reinforced concrete moment frame structure. Seismic fragility analysis uses Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) with Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NLTHA) and eleven selected ground motions based on soil classification, magnitude, fault distance, and earthquake source mechanism. The comparison result of IDA shows a trend of significant performance improvement, with the same performance level target and risk category, the base isolation structure can be used at 1.46-3.20 times higher PGA than the fixed base structure. Then the fragility analysis results show that the fixed base structure has a safety margin of 30% and a base isolation structure of 62.5% from the PGA design. This result is useful for assessing existing buildings or considering a new building's performance.
There are various ways to monitor active volcanoes, such as the method of observing the activity of a volcano with the naked eye, the method of referring to the past eruptive history based on the historic records and the method of monitoring volcanoes by using observation equipment. The most basic method from the observation equipment-using methods to monitor volcanoes is seismic monitoring. In addition to this, the ways to monitor volcanoes are as follows: resonance observation which may be effective to remove artificial noises from the seismic activities that are recorded in the seismograph, ground deformation by using precision leveling, electronic distance measurement, tiltmeter, GPS, and InSAR observation method, volcanic gas monitoring, hydrologic and meteorological monitoring, and other geophysical monitoring methods. These monitoring methods can make volcanic activities effectively monitored, determine the behavior of magmas in magma chambers and help predict the future volcanic eruptions more accurately and early warning, thus, minimize and mitigate the damage of volcanic hazards.
The comparison between time-lapse seismic datasets is the most popular method in the reservoir monitoring. The method of extracting the changes only due to the change in the reservoir is the essential technique in the comparison of time-lapse seismic datasets. In the paper, the conventional cross-equalization approaches and an enhanced optimized approach have been tested and compared each other. As conventional approaches, the bandwidth equalization and phase rotation methods have been tested in frequency, time and mixed domains, respectively and their results were compared each other. In order to overcome the limit of the conventional approaches, which loses high frequency components, a new constrained optimum filtering method was proposed and experimented. The new constrained filtering method has shown the improvement in broadening the bandwidth of the components of reservoir changes by acquiring optimized match filter.

The improvement in computing systems and sensor technologies devotes to conduct data-driven structural health monitoring algorithms for existing civil infrastructures. Despite of the development of techniques, the uncertainty oriented from the measurement results in the discrepancy to the actual structural parameters and let engineers or decision makers hesitate to adopt such techniques. Many studies have shown that the modal identification results can be affected by the uncertainties due to the applied methods and the types of loading. This paper aims to compare the performance of modal identification methods using Structural Modal Identification Toolsuite (SMIT) which has been developed to facilitate multiple identification methods with a user-friendly designed platform. The data fed into SMIT processes three stages for the comprehensive identification including preprocessing, eigenvalue estimation, and post-processing. The seismic and white noise response for shear frame model was obtained from numerical simulation. The identified modal parameters is compared to the actual modal parameters. In order to improve the quality of coherence in identified modal parameters, several hurdles including modal phase collinearity and extended modal amplitude coherence were introduced. Numerical simulation conducted on the 5 dof shear frame model were used to validate the effectiveness of using these parameters.

In this study, a structural health monitoring system for cable-stayed bridges is developed. In the system, condition assessment of the structure is performed based on measured records from seismic accelerometers. Response indices are defined to monitor structural safety and serviceability and derived from the measured acceleration data. The derivation process of the indices is structured to follow the transformation from the raw data to the outcome. The process includes noise filtering, baseline correction, numerical integration, and calculation of relative differences. The system is packed as a condition assessment program, which consists of four major processes of the structural health evaluation: (i) format conversion of the raw data, (ii) noise filtering, (iii) generation of response indices, and (iv) condition evaluation. An example set of limit states is presented to evaluate the structural condition of the test-bed and cable-stayed bridge.
As part of basic studies of monitoring carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) storage using electrical and seismic surveys, laboratory experiments have been conducted to measure resistivity and P-wave velocity changes due to the injection of $CO_2$ into water-saturated sandstone. The rock sample used is a cylinder of Berea sandstone. $CO_2$ was injected under supercritical conditions (10 MPa, $40^{\circ}C$). The experimental results show that resistivity increases monotonously throughout the injection period, while P-wave velocity and amplitude decrease drastically due to the supercritical $CO_2$ injection. A reconstructed P-wave velocity tomogram clearly images $CO_2$ migration in the sandstone sample. Both resistivity and seismic velocity are useful for monitoring $CO_2$ behaviour. P-wave velocity, however, is less sensitive than resistivity when the $CO_2$ saturation is greater than ~20%. The result indicates that the saturation estimation from resistivity can effectively complement the difficulty of $CO_2$ saturation estimations from seismic velocity variations. By combining resistivity and seismic velocity we were able to estimate $CO_2$ saturation distribution and the injected $CO_2$ behaviour in our sample.

Instrumental observation of earth quakes in KIGAM was first attempted in the earty 1980`s by using 6 portable seismographs in the vicinity of Yang-San Faults. Now twenty-four permanent stations, which are equipped with short-period or broad-band seismometer, are included in seismic research network in KIGAM, including KSRS array station in Wonju which is consisted of 26 bore-hole stations. The seismic network of KIGAM is also linked to that of KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute)which is consisted of eight stations installed within and around the nuclear power plants. Owing to real-time data acquisition by telemetry, it became feasible to automatically locate hypocenters of the local events within fifteen minutes by computer data processing system, named KEMS(Korea Earthquake Monitoring System). Results of the hypocenter determination, together with observational data, are compiled and stored in the data base system. And they are published via web site whose URL is http://quake.kigam.re.kr KIGAM is also running t재 permanent geomagnetic stations installed in Daejun and Kyungju. The observed geomagnetic data are transmitted to Earthquake Research Centre in KIGAM by seismic network and compiled for the purpose of earthquake prediction research and other basic geophysical research.
This paper examines the seismic responses of a reinforced concrete (RC) frame core-tube building with pre-pressed spring self-centering energy dissipation (PS-SCED) braces. The PS-SCED brace system consists of friction devices for energy dissipation, pre-pressed combination disc springs for self-centering and tube members as guiding elements. A constitutive model of self-centering flag-shaped hysteresis for PS-SCED brace is developed to better simulate the seismic responses of the RC frame core-tube building with PS-SCED braces, which is also verified by the tests of two braces under low cyclic reversed loading. Results indicate that the self-centering and energy dissipation capabilities are well predicted by the proposed constitutive model of the PS-SCED brace. The structure with PS-SCED braces presents similar peak story drift ratio, smaller peak acceleration, smaller base shear force and much smaller residual deformations as compared to the RC frame core-tube building with bucking-restrained braces (BRBs).
