  • To determine the seismic applicability of a long-span railway concrete upper-deck arch bridge with concrete-filled steel-tube (CFST) rigid skeleton ribs, some fundamental principles and seismic approaches for long-span bridges are investigated to update the design methods in the current Code for Seismic Design of Railway Engineering of China. Ductile and mixed isolation design are investigated respectively to compare the structural seismic performances. The flexural moment and plastic rotation demands and capacities are quantified to assess the seismic status of the ductile components. A kind of triple friction pendulum (TFP) system and lead-plug rubber bearing are applied simultaneously to regularize the structural seismic demands. The numerical analysis shows that the current ductile layout with continuous rigid frame approaching spans should be strengthened to satisfy the demands of rare earthquakes. However, the mixed isolation design embodies excellent seismic performances for the continuous girder approaching span of this railway arch bridge.

  • In this study, various application schemes of seismic isolation system which can be applied to Hanok have been studied by analyzing its structural characteristics under seismic load. Structural stability of Hanok is more required against seismic load as Hanok becomes long-spanned and multi-storied. To meet this goal, it becomes necessary to study more advanced technology such as seismic isolation design as well as seismic control design and seismic resistant design suitable to Hanok. Seismic isolation systems have been successfully applied to RC and steel structures to improve structural performance during earthquakes. Based on these previous study, we proposed four application schemes of seismic isolation design suitable for Hanok and analyzed their structural characteristics and applicability to Hanok in conceptual level based on its structural characteristics. The proposed four schemes are base isolation method, ground isolation method, roof isolation method and intermediate-story isolation method. The applicability of the proposed method was evaluated by performing boundary nonlinear dynamic analysis to the typical Hanok for the two types of isolation method, that is, ground isolation method and roof isolation method, and the results showed that the proposed methods produced good performance enough to be applied to Hanok.

  • Lately, a guideline for seismic design of electric substation facilities has been newly prepared and issued. The guideline adopts a new simplified dynamic analysis technique called "pseudo-resonance method" from the design code of Japan. The method can effectively consider resonance effect of structural system during earthquake motion. However, reliability and practical applicability of the method have not been fully guaranteed under the different seismic and engineering situations in Korea. This paper presents a validation study of the pseudo-resonance method for practical seismic analysis. For this purpose, various parametric studies have been performed using recorded earthquake motions and idealized substation equipment models. The results showed that the pseudo-resonance method can be effectively used for the practical seismic design of substation facilities in Korea.

  • Nonlinear seismic performances of code designed Perforated Steel Plate Shear Walls (P-SPSW) were studied. Three multi-storey (4-, 8-, and 12-storey) P-SPSWs were designed according to Canadian seismic provisions and their performance was evaluated using time history analysis for ground motions compatible with Vancouver response spectrum. The selected code designed P-SPSWs exhibited excellent seismic performance with high ductility and strength. The current code equation was found to provide a good estimation of the shear strength of the perforated infill plate, especially when the infill plate is yielded. The applicability of the strip model, originally proposed for solid infill plate, was also evaluated for P-SPSW and two different strip models were studied. It was observed that the strip model with strip widths equal to center to center diagonal distance between each perforation line could reasonably predict the inelastic behavior of unstiffened P-SPSWs. The strip model slightly underestimated the initial stiffness; however, the ultimate strength was predicted well. Furthermore, applicability of simple shear-flexure beam model for determination of fundamental periods of P-SPSWs was studied.

  • The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of site is very important in the various fields of geotechnical engineering. To obtain shear wave velocity profile, various in-situ seismic methods using surface waves have been developed. These surface wave based in-situ seismic methods have their own strength and weakness. In this study, new seismic site characterization method using the harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) was proposed to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave based seismic site characterization methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform have been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. In order to estimate the applicability of HWAW method, field tests were performed. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the applicability of the proposed method were verified.

  • In this study, we have developed the high resolution multichannel seismic data acquisition system and shallow marine seismic source. It is easy to operate and handle our source system which utilizes piezoelectric transducer of high electrical power. We have manufactured two 4-channel streamers for multi-channel marine seismic survey. In the recording part, we used 24bits and 8 channel high speed A/D board. Therefore, we could achieve the improvement of data quality and the efficiency of data acquisition. We compared the developed system with the conventional system to demonstrate its field applicability.

  • 3D seismic tomography technique was assessed for applicability of developed 3D tomography algorithm based on Fresnel volume in the dam-planned area. Reconstructed 3D tomogram based on Fresnel volume and Fast Marching Method(FMM) reveals similar velocity structure to the other geotechnical survey results. With the correlation analysis between RMR data and seismic velocity information, it could provide reliable information of rock mass rate. The applicability of 3D seismic tomography was verified in this study. It would be expected to apply 3D tomography with new developed first arrival calculation and inversion algorithm to the engineering field economically.

  • In this study the modified seismic coefficient method for seismic analysis of buried box structures is developed for practical purpose. The loading coefficient in the modified seismic coefficient method is determined from the results of the response displacement analysis. In the developed method adequate velocity response spectrum in accordance with soil condition is also needed to seismic design of buried box structures, In order to investigate applicability of the modified seismic coefficient method various analyses are performed with different parameters such as depth of base rock height and width of box buried depth and value of standard penetration test. Results from the modified seismic coefficient method are compared with those of the response displacement method in terms of the maximum bending moment and the location of it. From the comparison it is shown that the feasibility of the modified seismic coefficient method for seismic analysis of buried box structures.

  • Generally, the time history analysis among seismic response analyses of a structure needs more times than static analysis. Therefore the mechanical model of a structure has been used as a simple lumped parameter model in time history analysis. For the most cases, the simple mechanical model shows the similar results to that of detailed finite element model. so it is reasonable to use the simple mode] in preliminary analysis. In seismic design of liquid storage tank, such as LNG storage tank, the lumped parameter mode] also is being used in preliminary analysis, however sometimes shows the differences to the results of detailed finite element model. Therefore in this study, the dynamic characteristics between lumped parameter model and detailed finite model is compared for the variables such as height/diameter of liquid-storage tank and thickness of wall, then the applicability of beam mode] to the seismic response analysis are evaluated for some liquid storage tanks.
