  • This study was conducted to clarify reasonable root pruning and transplanting density for efficient production of seedlings of Quercus species, which is a representative planting species in Korea. Seedlings of Q. acutissima and Q. serrata, which were pruned roots by 5 cm, showed poorer above-ground and root growth compared to those pruned by 10 cm and 15 cm, and growth performance of seedlings pruned by 10 cm was shown similarly those pruned by 15 cm. The growth performance of seedlings transplanted in the density of below 64 seedlings per $m^2$ was greater than those transplanted in the density of over 81 seedlings per $m^2$. Therefore, one-year-old seedlings of Q. acutissima and Q. serrata should be transplanted in the density of 64 seedlings per $m^2$ after pruning their roots by 10 cm to obtain excellent growth performance and increase the efficiency of transplanting. The results of this study can be used as baseline for producing superior seedlings of Q. acutissima and Q. serrata at nursery and understanding early transplanting performance of the species.

  • A series of methanol extracts from leaf and root parts in spring- and winter-barley plants were assayed to determine their allelopathy and antioxidant activity. The methanol extracts applied on filter paper in a Petri-dish significantly inhibited root growth of Chinese milkvetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) seedlings. Leaf extracts at 25 and 50 g $L^{-1}$ inhibited root growth of Chinese milkvetch seedlings more than root extracts. No difference in phytotoxic effects of spring- and winter-barley seedlings extracts on root growth of Chinese milkvetch was observed. Methanol extracts dose-dependently increased DPPH free radical scavenging activity in vitro. DPPH free radical scavenging activity was higher in the methanol extracts from winter-barley seedlings than in those from spring-barley seedlings, and from leaf extracts than from root extracts. The antioxidant potential of the individual fraction from the methanol extracts of spring-barley seedlings was in order of n-butanol>ethyl acetate>water>chloroform>n-hexane fraction. By means of HPLC analysis, spring-barley (200.62 mg $100g^{-1}$) had more amount of total phenol acid than winter-barley (114.08 mg $100g^{-1}$). Especially, ferulic acid was detected in spring-barley extract (183.46 mg $100g^{-1}$) as the greatest amount. These results suggest that early seedlings of barley plants had potent allelopathy and antioxidant activity, and their activities were differently exhibited depending on plant parts and growing condition.

  • This experiment was performed to investigate the effect of UV-B (4 kJ${\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$) irradiation and growth inhibitor (50 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole, 500 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$) treatment on the overgrowth retardation and the growth and yield afterplanting in plug-grown cucumber, tomato, and hot pepper sedlings. Stem length of UV-B-irradiated and iniconazole-treated seedlings was shortened by 38 and 35%^ in cucumber, 37 and 41% in tomato, and 23 and 23% in hot pepper, respectively, compared with non-treated seedlings. While retarding effect ofhexaconazole waslower that that of UV-B or diniconazle. Leaf area and dry weight alson decreased but ldaf thickness increased in UV-B irradiated or growth-inhibitor-treated seedlings. Even thouth the plant height and leaf area of UV-B-irradiated seedlings ant seedling stage were shorter and smaller that those ofnon-treatedd seedlings, they were recovered to the similar level to the growth of non-treated seedlings 20to 30days after trasplantin. The diconazole-and hexaconazole-treated seedlings were delayed recovery to their normal growth, Fruit yiedl of UV-V-irradiated hot pepper and tomato slightly increased but UV-B irradiated cucumer had similar yield to growth-inhibitor-treated one. It suggested that the use of UV-B irradiation could become a reliable tool of overgrowth retardation of plug-grown vegetable seedlings in greenhouse.

  • The effects of Mn on growth and nutrient status of Pinus densiflora seedlings grown in a nutrient culture solution were investigated. Mn concentrations was added as manganese chloride at 0, 30 and 60ppm to the nutrient culture solution. The 2-year-old seedlings were transplanted into the solution maintained at pH 4.0, and grown for 90 days in a greenhouse. The Mn treatment induced a significant reduction in the dry weight growth of the seedlings. The relative growth rate(RGR) and net assimilation rate(NAR) of the seedlings decreased with increasing Mn concentrations in the nutrient culture solutions. For the nutrient status of the seedlings, Ca and Mg content in trunk and root was least in 60ppm Mn treatment, and Mn content in needle was about 3 times more than in root. Also the net photosynthetic rate of the seedlings was significantly lower both in 30ppm and 60ppm Mn treatment compared to them in 0ppm. This result suggests that the reductions in the RGR and NAR of the seedlings may be resulted from the inhibition of net photosynthesis by the mixed effect of lower nutrient uptake of roots and excess accumulation of Mn in needle.

  • Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb. ex Murray) Koidz. is natively distributed in Korea. The importance of this species has been increased not only for high quality timber but for medicinal and edible uses. However, increasing market demand of K. septemlobus with illegal cutting and overexploitation has resulted in its rapid depletion and destruction of natural habitat. This study was conducted to understand the survival rate and growth characteristics of planted K. septemlobus seedlings with treatment of root pruning, stem cutting and planting density. The survival rate and growth of height and root-collar diameter for one- and two-year old seedlings with different planting densities were investigated in the clear-cut area of a Pinus densiflora stand for five years. One-year-old seedlings were treated with or without root pruning and planted with three density levels (5,000 trees $ha^{-1}$, 10,000 trees $ha^{-1}$, and 40,000 trees $ha^{-1}$). Two-year-old seedlings were treated with and without stem cutting and planted with the density of 5,000 trees $ha^{-1}$. The survival rate of one-year-old seedlings with root pruning treatment in the density of 10,000 trees $ha^{-1}$ was 92%, while that without root pruning in the density of 40,000 trees $ha^{-1}$ was 67% after five years. The height of one-year-old seedlings has been significantly affected only by planting density in the $5^{th}$ year. The survival rate of the two-year-old seedlings with stem cutting was 75.5% and greater than control (67.3%) in the $5^{th}$ year but no difference in height was shown between the two treatments from three years after plantation.

  • Background: The growth process of ginseng seedlings is very important in producing good quality ginseng. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of different microclimates on the growth characteristics of ginseng seedlings in a multi-layer bed facility. Methods and Results: Ginseng seedlings were cultivated in a three-layer bed facility. The air temperatures on the first and second floors were similar, while that on the third floor was about $1-4^{\circ}C$ higher than that on the other floors. The vapor pressure deficit (VPD) was higher inside than on the outside of the facility, and that on third floor was the highest in the multi-layer bed system. The photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll fluorescence, and growth characteristics of ginseng seedlings did not significantly differ among the three floors. The yield of ginseng seedlings was the highest at $721g/1.62m^2$ on the first floor. Conclusions: It was found that microclimate plays an important role in growing ginseng seedlings in multi-layer bed facilities, and therefore proper environmental control is important. In addition, producing ginseng seedlings using multi-layer bed facilities is a technology that is expected to provide a way to overcome climate change and stabilize ginseng production.

  • An experiment was set to assess the effect of mixed plantings on initial growth and biomass yield of two common plantation tree species of Bangladesh namely Acacia auriculiformis (A) and Gmelina arborea (G). Study was carried out in the nursery bed of the Seed Research Laboratory and Nursery of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University (IFESCU), Bangladesh during February to November, 2015. The treatments consisted of two pure planting plots (100% A and 100% G) and five mixed planting plots (50%A: 50%G, 35%A: 65%G, 25%A: 75%G, 65%A: 35%G and 75%A: 25%G) of these two species. In nursery, seedlings were raised in a randomized blocks with four replicates of seven treatment plots. Periodic increments on height (cm), collar diameter (cm) and leaf/phyllode number of the seedlings was taken in every month and continued up to 10 months. The growth and biomass yield of seedlings were measured 10 months after the first seed was emerged. The effects of mixed plantation on growth and biomass were compared to that of seedlings grown in pure plantation. At the age of 10 months it was found that G. arborea seedlings were significantly tallest (240.13 cm) when planted with A. auriculiformis in a proportion of 25%A: 75%G, whereas A. auriculiformis were tallest in the pure 100% A plot, with an average mean height of 135.36 cm. Maximum collar diameter (1.38 cm) was recorded for G. arborea in the mixed plots 75%A: 25%G. Fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots of the seedlings were found significantly (p<0.05) highest in 50%A: 50%G plot for G. arborea. G. arborea also showed highest quality index when mixed with A. auriculiformis in a proportion of 50:50, with an average value of 8.96. The results revealed a positive correlation between seedling growth and various planting patterns.

  • The germination percentages of Quercus hybrid seeds produced in 1994 using stored pollens were low. The survival rate and height growth within 2 years differed according to crossing combinations. The survival rate and growth of seedlings from hybrid seeds produced in 1991 and 1993 were investigated. The survival rates of five-year-old and three-year-old seedlings were from 71 to 100% and from 33 to 100%, respectively. The survival rates differed according to cross combinations. The mortality of seedlings increased in proportion to the increase of percentages of dwarf seedlings. The growth of five-year-old seedlings, of which mother tree was Q. aliena, was the best. The growth of seedlings produced by artificial crossing tended to be worse than that of natural crossing.

  • The effects of water stress on the development of Alpova dipiophloeus ectomycorrhizas and on the growth of nodulated Alnus rubra Bong seedlings were investigated. Five-day cyclic water stress significantly decreased the ectomycorrhizal development and the seedling growth. However, A. diplophloeus inoculated seedlings did not significantly differ from the non-inoculated seedlings in the growth and physiological activities under both well watered and water stressed conditions. $N_2$-fixation was less sensitive than $CO_2$ fixation to water stress. We conclude that under water stress conditions A. diplophloeus mycorrhizas do not contribute to the fitness of red alder seedlings.
