With rapid climate change and increasing global warming, the distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees (EBLTs) is gradually expanding to the inland regions of Korea. The aim of the present study was to analyze the survival rate of 148 EBLT plantations measuring 180 ha and to determine the optimal plantation size that would help in coping with climate change in the warm, temperate climate zone of the Korean peninsula. For enhancing the reliability of our estimated survival model, we selected a set of 11 control variables that may have also influenced the survival rates of the EBLTs in the 148 plantations. The results of partial correlation analysis showed that the survival rate of 67.0±26.9 of the EBLTs in the initial plantation year was primarily correlated with plantation type by the crown closure of the upper story of the forest, wind exposure, and precipitation. For predicting the probability of survival by quantification theory, 148 plots were surveyed and analyzed with 11 environmental site factors. Survival rate was in the order of plantation type by the crown closure of upper story of the forest, wind exposure, total cumulative precipitation for two weeks prior to planting, and slope stiffness in the descending order of score range in the estimated survival model for the EBLTs with the fact that survival rate increased with shade rate of upper story to some extent.
To obtain the fundamental data for the mass seedling production of grunt, Hapalogenys nitens, we investigated the influence of salinity and cold water temperature on hatching and survival of eggs and growth and survival of larvae and fry. In regards to salinity, we surveyed the hatching rate and floating rate of fertilized eggs, the floating rate and survival rate of hatching larvae, and the survival and growth of fry. In respect to cold temperature, we investigated the influence of degree of daily temperature decrease, acute temperature shock, and slow temperature decreases on the survival, feeding and swimming activities of fry. In the salinity experiment, the hatching and floating rates of fertilized eggs, and the floating and survival rates of hatching larvae, were shown to be higher in seawater than in brackish water. Growth and survival of larvae and fry were not different between seawater (25~32 psu) and brackish water (5~20 psu), but were significantly lower in freshwater. In the cold-temperature test, three tests showed that rearing of fry in cold water and acutely decreasing water temperature to less than $10^{\circ}C$ reduced the survival, feeding and swimming activities of the fry. Therefore, we concluded that low salinity (less than 32 psu) could reduce the hatching rate and survival of eggs, but the growth and survival of fry were not influenced by salinity, and cold water (less than $10^{\circ}C$) decreased metabolism of grunt. During winter, we found a low-temperature limit at $8^{\circ}C$.
Seedling establishment, overwintering ability and dry matter production of Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L. CMV) in natural reseeding practice were compared with the annual seedling in 2006~2007 and 2007~2008. In natural reseeding, CMV seeds were distributed up to 15 cm soil depth in autumn after rice harvest and the seeds generally emerged from soil at less than 5 cm depth while they all emerged from soil surface in the annual seeding. It took 7-8 d longer in seedling establishment of the natural reseeding practice than the annual seeding. Generally, the natural reseeding practice showed higher seedling stand than the annual seeding because of high seedling survival rate. The high seedling survival rate in natural reseeded plant was attributed to the longer root length than that of the annual-seeded plant. In annual seeding, most of the seeds emerged from the soil surface and the root can not easily penetrate the soil while, in natural reseeding technology, the seeds incorporated into the soil during land preparation emerged from the soil at 0 to 5 cm depths, thereby having longer root length. The long root length contributed to greater ability to survive even under low temperature and low soil moisture conditions during winter. The dry matter production in the natural reseeding practice was also higher than the annual seeding when the temperature is low and soil moisture is not sufficient. This result indicates that natural reseeding technology is more stable and beneficial in seedling establishment and dry matter production as compared with the annual seeding especially under unfavorable environmental condition for CMV growth. This practice could be encouraged in CMV-rice cropping system in the southern parts of Korea.
To cope with increasing importance of water stress in food crop production, characteristics and cultivar differences in physiological responses of winter barley plants to water stress during seedling stage were studied employing three covered-barley, Milyang 12, Durubori, and Olbori, one naked-barley, Baekdong, and one two-row beer-barley, Hyangmaeg. Water stress was given to barley plants by withholding watering in soil-culture pots or by adding P.E.G. (polyethylene glycol, M. W. 4,000) to the nutrient culture solution. When water stress was imposed by withholding watering for 10 days to the seedlings grown in pot-soil for 10 days after emergence, leaf water potential of 5 cultivars was decreased almost to the same degree, from control -3.5 bar to the water stressed -26.6 bar. However, growth and some physiological responses were differently affected by cultivars: The plant height was decreased by 16-26% : seedling dry weight by 25∼42% ; chlorophyll content by 21∼39% ; second leaf survival rate by 8∼18% ; and free proline content per gram of leaf dry weight was increased from control 0.2∼0.5mg to the water stressed 5.8∼13.2mg. Drought resistances of 5 barley cultivars, based on the leaf survival rate and the decreased rate in seedling dry weight at the end of stress treatment, were high in the order of 3 covered-barley>naked-barley>two-row barley.
We investigated geographical condition and soil characteristic of ginseng cultivation site. At all sites, crown density adjusted by 80%. and Air and soil temperature were also measured. The geographical condition vary ato all sites. and soil shows similar characteristics with typical forest soil of Korea. The results shows the Air temperature needs to be higher than $15^{\circ}C$ for seed budding at April When soil temperature reach at 8, leaf of foest ginseng starts to bud. A forest ginseng is influenced by forest type, planting type and budding rates. In the case of a seedling planting, an seeding emergence rate is high, but the rate is decreased rapidly after three years On the other hand, direct seeding shows lower seedling emergence rate, but survival rate is higher than seedling-planting.
Halophytes are plants of saline habitats that grow under conditions that may vary in extremes of temperatures (freezing to very hot), water availability (drought to water logging) and salinity (mild to almost saturation). Halophytes may also face sudden micro-environmental variations within their habitats. In this study, we examine some of the factors that determine the ability of seeds of Artemisia fukudo to germinate when conditions are optimal for seedling growth and survival. Germination percentage was the highest at 77.5% when treated in 0% seawater and seedling growth was best in 0% seawater plug cell tray. Physiological quality (chlorophyll contents) and mean germination time were best in the condition in which seeds were treated with 0% seawater (control). Germination performance index in the control group showed the highest value to 3.8. Seedling growth, seedling vigor index in the length of seedling growth andthe relative growth rate were the highest values of 0.76 cm, 1.43, 0.0099, respectively.
In order to know the effect of seed size on the early plant life history, we measured the rate of germination, early growth and winter survival of four oak species with different acorn size (large, medium and small). The mean germination rate was higher in the larger seed species ($Q.$$acutissima$ and ($Q.$$variabilis$) than those of the smaller seed species ($Q.$$aliena$ and $Q.$$serrata$). Within $Q.$$variabilis$, the germination rate decreased with larger acorn size class but that of rest other species was not significantly affected by the acorn size. The early mean growth rate decreased with acorn size in the order of $Q.$$acutissima$, $Q.$$variabilis$, $Q.$$aliena$ and $Q.$$serrata$. The early mean growth rate was higher in large or medium size than in small size of $Q.$$acutissima$ and $Q.$$variabilis$, but it showed no difference with acorn size in $Q.$$aliena$ and $Q.$$serrata$. Survival rate in winter was the highest in the medium acorn size among 4 oak species, the seedling of $Q.$$serrata$ and $Q.$$variabilis$ did not survive in both large and small acorn size. These results indicate that seed size influences a different effect on the early plant life history stage.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of pathogenic hngi(Fusarium culmorurn, Fusarium oxyspomm fsp. lycopersici, Fusaiurn solani, Rhizoctonia solani), pregermination time(0, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 48 hrs.) and temperature($12^{\circ}C, 18^C{\circ}, $28^C{\circ}$) on growth of alfalfa seedling. The survival rate of alfalfa was decreased by pathogenic hngi and treatment of pregermination and survival rate of alfalfa resulted in higher than that of nontreatment of pregermination. Pathogenicity of fungi was increased as increased the temperature(P<0.05). The emergence rate of alfalfa was decreased when pathogenic fungi were inoculated. However, the emergence rate was increased when seeds were pregerminated(P<0.05)
Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to investigate allelopathic potential of some weed species on alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) germination and seedling growth. In the comparison between top(leaves+stems) and root extracts, top extract exhibited greater allelopathic effects on alfalfa germination than that of root. The various weed species extract differently responded to alfalfa test species, WL-320, in terms of allelopathic effect. Top and root aqueous extracts of lambsquarter(Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail(Setaria faberii Herrm.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), velvetleaf(Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), crabgrass(Digitaria sanguinalis L.), canada thistle(Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed(Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, vigor, and rate of germination of alfalfa. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed that velvetleaf(b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass(b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa germination. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried extracts compared to the fresh extracts. Residue of velvetleaf inhibited significantly alfalfa emergence and survival percentage compared to the control. The emergence and survival percentage of alfalfa were 44%, 57% at 1.0% residue treatment, respectively. When weed residues were mixed with silica sand with incubation time, velvetleaf residue most inhibited alfalfa growth. The degree of inhibition increased as incubation time increased. An incubation for 72h caused the greatest inhibition of alfalfa growth. These results demonstrate the different allelopathic activity of weed species extracts on alfalfa and suggest that weed may affect alfalfa growth and development through the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels and types of nitrogen fertilizer on seedlings and soil chemical properties in a semi-arid area, Mongolia. 2-year-old Populus sibirica and 4-year-old Ulmus pumila seedlings were planted in May 2014. Six treatments with three levels of nitrogen (low-level: urea $5g\;tree^{-1}$; medium-level: urea $15g\;tree^{-1}$, ammonium sulfate $33g\;tree^{-1}$, urea $15g\;tree^{-1}$ with potassium phosphate $10g\;tree^{-1}$; high-level: urea $30g\;tree^{-1}$) were applied and for the medium-level of nitrogen, different types of fertilizer were treated. Survival rate, root collar diameter (RCD) growth rate, leaf nitrogen concentration of seedlings, and soil chemical properties were determined in August 2014. The seedling survival rate of both species decreased as the level of nitrogen increased. This result can be explained by water stress caused by nitrogen fertilization in arid regions. The RCD growth rate of P. sibirica was significantly decreased by the treatment of high-level of nitrogen due to excessive nitrogen fertilization, and was increased by the treatment of ammonium sulfate due to sulfur which might promote nitrogen uptake. The leaf nitrogen concentration of P. sibirica did not change by the treatment of low-level of nitrogen, and was increased by the treatment of medium-level of nitrogen. There were no significant differences in the RCD growth rate and the leaf nitrogen concentration of U. pumila among the six treatments. None of soil chemical properties was affected by nitrogen fertilization. Overall, the low-level of nitrogen showed no effect on seedlings and soil chemical properties, except on survival rate of U. pumila and the high-level of nitrogen was considered excessive fertilization. Continuous monitoring of medium-level nitrogen fertilization including the ammonium sulfate, which increased early growth of seedlings, would be needed to elucidate the effect of fertilization on seedling growth and soil properties in a semi-arid region.
