This study was initiated to obtain the scientific information for the improvement of paddy soil. Mean values and mutual relationships of bulk density, pH values and the content of organic matter were investigated at the 124 field sites shown to be nationwide high-yielding, young seedling field s and their neighboring fields under the different soil textures and depths. The soil samples were collected and those samples were analyzed in the laboratory of Agricultural Sciences Institute. Mean values among the different soil textures and depths were estimated with loam-textured. Bulk density were significantly correlated with sand and silt in topsoil, and that were appeared to be correlated to sand, silt + clay, pH and content of organic matter highly significant in 1% level. Regression equation of soil bulk density(Y) to clay(C), orgnic matter (OM) and content of silt + clay(S+C) were as follows for the topsoil, Y=1.365+0.006C-0.003(S+C)~0.034OM (R=0.067*), and for the subsoil, Y=1.548 -0.002C-0.0007 (S+C) -0.036OM (R=0.122**).

Investigation of the optimum levels of pre-plant nitrogen for raising of hot pepper (cv. Nokkwang) plug seedlings was the objective of this research. To achieve this, the pre-plant nitrogen levels were varied to 0, 100, 250, 500, 750, 1,000, and $1,500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and the other essential nutrients were controlled to equal concentrations in all treatments. All the fertilizers were added during the formulation of the mixed medium of coir dust, peatmoss, and perlite with the ratio of 35, 35, and 30% (v/v/v). The root medium containing pre-plant fertilizer was packed into 50-cell plug trays and seeds were sown. The measurement of pH and EC in every week, soil solution analysis for nutrients in week 0, 3, and 7 and growth measurements as well as tissue analysis for nutrient contents in week 7 were conducted. The pHs measured before seed sowing did not show significant differences, but the differences among treatments became significant as seedlings grow bigger. The soil solution ECs were significantly different among treatments in week 0 and these differences were diminished by degrees after week 3, resulting in no significant differences among treatments in week 7. The trends in changes of $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, and other the macro-element concentrations in soil solution of root media were similar to those of ECs. The treatments of 500 and $750mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ N were more effective than other treatments on seedling growth. The seedling growths in the treatments containing higher N than $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and control were severely suppressed. The elevated pre-plant N concentrations in the root medium resulted in the increase of tissue N contents. The treatments of 500 and $750mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ N shown the highest seedling growths had 5.13% and 5.31%, respectively, in tissue N contents based on the dry weight of above ground tissue at week 7. The results of this study indicated that the optimum level of pre-plant N is 500 to $750mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for the raising of hot pepper plug seedlings.
The population and kinds of algae causing the waterbloom on the rice seedling bed and the damage of young rice plant by the nuisance green phytoplanktonic algae in rice field were studied to find out the efficiency of fertilizers and the effect of methods of fertilizers application in the rice field, laboratory, pot and green house. pot and green house. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. In the rice seedling bed, the kinds of algae causing waterblooms were identified mainly photosynthetic bluegreen algae as the Anabaena, Ulothrix and Oscillatoria spp. in reclaimed saline soil. Micromonospora, Oscillatoria, and Chlamydomonas spp. were habitated mainly in plain. Whereas, Spyrogyra, Oscillatoria and Navicula spp. were identified mainly in mauntainous area. 2. In the rice field, the nuisance phytoplanktonic green algae were identified mainly Scenedesmus, Chlamidospora, and Micromonospora spp. in Gimjae plain, in Namweon mountainous area and Gangjin costal plain, respectively. 3. The algal biomass has been havily habitated in which rice field were constituted with high pH value and high concentration of $NH^+_4-N$ and $NO^-_3-N$ in surface water and in soil with the optimum temperature for the algal growth ($22-30^{\circ}C$). 4. In the laboratory experiment, maximum algal biomass were obtained at levels of 80 ppm for the nitrogen and 20 ppm for the phosphorus. And were obtained of the levels of 40 ppm in the case of joint application of N and $P_2O_5$. 5. From the pot experiment, compare of the control plot, an addition of nitrogen alone or nitrogen+phosphorus enhanced algal biomass while the phosphorus alone did not. 6. Surface application of fertilizer was remarkably increased of algal biomass than did the whole layer or deep layer application.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of rice hull cover on seed germination and tray types, soil types, shading conditions for seedling growth of Codonopsis pilosuala. We also examined the feasibility of cultivation of small seedlings transplanted in the Gyeonggi-do area for a month. Under control condition, the seed germination was 8% whereas it dramatically increased to 78% under rice hull cover treatment. Under the different conditions (tray types, soil types, and shading conditions), young seedlings showed the best quality without shading in TKS soil of 50 plug cell tray, with the growth characteristics of plant height (11.9 cm), number of leaves (71), leaf width (3.1 cm), leaf length (2.6 cm), and root length (14.3 cm). Seedling quality was the best without any shading in TKS+perlite, with the physiological characteristics of evaporation (3.9 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$), carbon assimilation (9.1 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$), and water use efficiency (2.2 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$). Considering the economical, morphological, physiological and survival rate of the seedlings, it was an ideal method for transplanting seedlings in the field after they have been grown for 30-45 days in TKS and TKS+perlite of 200 plug cell tray in 0% or 30% shaded conditions. As the results of 5 months examination on the possibility to cultivate Codonopsis pilosuala in the Gyeonggi-do area, 88% to 96% of survival rate was observed with normal induced flowers. Therefore, cultivation of Codonopsis pilosuala was possible in the Gyeonggi-do area. While there were symptoms of etiolation and wilting under no shading condition, they did not appear in 30% and 70% shading conditions. Therefore, cultivation of Codonopsis pilosuala is considered to be necessary 30% or 70% shading.

The paper industry produces about 6,000 ton of paper ashes yearly with by-products in Yuhan-Kimberly Ltd. The paper ashes was analyzed and evaluated for their potential as the soil acidity amendment materials. This study was conducted to investigate a reasonable amount of paper ashes for soil acidity amendment effect to be applied onto raising seedling of Calendula officinalis L. The mixed proportion of applied ashes, which was compared with agricultural lime, was treated to 0, 5, 10 and 15% (v/v) in mixed soil (pH 6.0) and the peat moss (pH 3.8) respectively. Consequently paper ashe was found to be more effective than agricultural lime at germination percentage, growth condition and in sharp initial increase of soil pH. The appropriate proportion of applied paper ash was 10% (v/v) at the soil-mix, and 15% (v/v) at the peat-moss. Soil application of paper ashes may provide supplemental quantities of K, Ca, Mg and other plant nutrients. But heavy metal concentrations in paper ash was low and should not limit application rates.
This study was conducted to find out the effect of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, such as latex coated urea(LCU) and Meister10(MS10) on direct seeded rice in dry soil(DS). Junghwabyeo, and early maturity rice cultivar was grown on the plots which were treated with None-nitrogen. urea. LCU and MS10 plot. Growth characteristic, yield and yield components were investigated. Nitrogen uptake-efficiency and physico-chemical properties of soil before-after experiment were analyzed. Plant height and number of tillers $m^{-2}$ in LCU and MS10 plot at early grow stages were higher than those in urea plot. Plant height and number of tillers $m^{-2}$ grown on the plot of Ms10 plot were higher than those of LCU plot. The number of seedling $m^{-2}$ were no significant differences among None-N, urea, and MS10 plot in DS. Heading date and leaf color were higher with Urea than LCU and MS10 plot. Culm length in LCU and MS10 plot were longer compared with urea plot, but panicle length was similar among with Urea, LCU and MS10 plot. Number of panicles $m^{-2}$ was greater in order of MS10 > LCU > Urea plot. Yield were greater in order of MS10 > LCU > Urea plot. Nitrogen uptake and nitrogen efficiency were greater in order of MS10 > LCU > urea plot. After the experiment, total content of nitrogen in soil was not changed at all treatments, but pH, P and Si of soil were lower than those of before experiment at all treatments.
This study was conducted to find out the effect of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, such as latex coated urea(LCU) and Meister10(MS10) on direct seeded rice in flooded soil(FS). Junghwabyeo, and early maturity rice cultivar grown on the plots which were treated with None-nitrogen, urea, LCU and MS10 plot. Growth characteristic, yield and yield components were investigated. Nitrogen uptake-efficiency and physico-chemical properties of soil before-after experiment were analyzed. Plant height and number of tillers $m^{-2}$ in LCU and MS10 plot at early grow stages were higher than those of Urea plot. MS10 and LCU plot showed similar tendency on the plant height but MS10 plot was higher than LCU plot on the number of tillers $m^{-2}$. The number of seedling $m^{-2}$ were no significant differences among None-N, urea, and MS10 plot. Heading date and leaf color were no significant differences among None-N, urea, and MS10 plot. Field experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of different residue treatment of vetch sward on soil improvement, rice growth and grain yield from 1995 to 1996. With Chinese milkvetch, pH, Ca, and Mg of paddy soil were increased in subsoil(10~20cm soil depth), and organic matter, P$_2$$O_{5}$, and K were increased in top soil (0~10cm soil depth). Redox potential of the paddy soil with milkvetch residue was severely reduced at earlier flooding period, and recovered gradually as rice growth continued. Weeds were more abundant in the paddy with unchanged vetch stand. The most dominant weed species in the paddy soil with vetch sward residue was Echinochloa crus-galli, followed by Leersia japonica, Polygonum hydropiper in the order of abundance. Seedling establishment ratio of rice directly sown over vetch-sward was lower than in conventional tillage paddy(no-vetch, tilled) condition. Rice growth pattern, however, was not significantly affected by vetch sward treatments. The number of tillers per square meter and plant height at heading date were not significantly different among the vetch-sward treatments. Grain yield was the highest in plough of vetch vegetation, followed by conventional (no-vetch, tilled), live-mulching of vetch, vetch-removed, and vetch-desiccated by weedcide. The whole grain rice yield was the lowest in vetch-desiccated by weedcide.

Reclamation area is characterized by high soil salinity and high ground water table that are not favorable environment for tree growth. However, the increasing demand to convert the reclamation area from rice cultivation fields to industrial or residential complex, or parks accompanies the idea of introduction of trees in the area. This study aimed to suggest better performed tree species for the tree planting in the Seosan reclamation area, Chungchungnam-do. Seedlings of 8 tree species (Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Chionanthus retusus, Cornus kousa, Prunus sargentii, Quercus acutissima, and Zelkova serrata) were planted in 4 types of 10 m ${\times}$ 10 m experimental plots. The survival rate and the height growth of seedlings were measured from April 2006 to November 2008 on an annual basis. The experimental plots were constructed using 2 different soil material (dredged sand and dredged sand + forest soil), and 2 soil covering depth (1.5 m and 2.0 m). The tree species showed different survival rates for 3 years since planting (F = 9.632, P < 0.001). C. kousa, Q. acutissima, and P. sargentii showed high mortality rate while P. thunbergii, M. glyptostroboides and Z. serrata showed lower mortality rates. The seedling height growth for 3 years was also significantly different among species (F=4.749, P=0.002). Most of seedlings showed lower height growth in the second year, and the growth began to recover in the third year after transplanting. The survival rate and the growth of the seedlings were better in higher soil covering depth and forest soil material plots regardless of species. The combination of rank orders in survival rate and relative height growth indicates that P. thunbergii, M. glyptostroboides and Z. serrata would perform better than other species used in the experiment, while C. retusus, C. kousa and P. sargenti may not adapt well to this area.

This study was carried out to select the Eco-tree for successful phytoremediation of abandoned metalliferous mines. We examined vegetation and heavy metal concentrations of woody plants in abandoned mining areas, and also conducted seed germination and seedling growth experiment on contaminated soils from Gahak and Geumjeong mines. Pinus densiflora, Robinia pseudoacacia, Lespedeza bicolor and Alnus japonica showed high frequency in the survey areas and had high heavy metal concentrations compared to other species. Heavy metal concentrations were higher in roots than in leaves and stems. The seed germination rate was in the order of P. densiflora, L. bicolor, R. pseudoacacia, and Alnus japonica from the incubactor and greenhouse experiment. In the incubator experiment germination rate was highest in the control soil for P. densiflora and A. japonica. Germination rate of P. densiflora was highest on the 100% contaminated soil for Gahak mine while germination rate decreased with increased percentage of contaminated soil for Geumjeong mine. In the greenhouse experiment germination rate was lowest on the 40% contaminated soil for Gahak mine while germination rate was lowest on the 20% contaminated soil for Geumjeong mine and increased with increased percentage of contaminated soil. Shoot growth was highest for L. bicolor while root growth was highest for R. pseudoacacia except for 20% contaminated soil in Geumjeong mine.
