In this study, we describe the preliminary application for the delineation of a metal object using cone-beam reconstruction (CBR) based on limited electronic portal imaging device (EPID) projections. A typical Feldkamp, Davis and Kress (FDK) reconstruction algorithm accompanying the edge preserving smoothing filter was used as only a few projections are acquired for reconstruction. In a correlation study of the projection numbers, we found that the size of the seeds and their location depicted by these CBR images were almost identical. Limited views were used for CBR, and our method is inexpensive and competitive for use in clinical applications.
Background: An important consideration for the risk assessment of transgenic plants is their overwintering potential in a natural ecosystem, which allows the survival of the seed bank and may lead to seed reproduction. Here, we investigated the overwintering of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds in the laboratory (temperatures: -5, -1, 5, and 10℃) and in the field (burial depth: 0, 5, 15, and 30 cm) as a case study to examine the invasiveness of transgenic crops. Results: Sunflower seeds germinated when incubated at 5℃ and 10℃ for 2, 4, 6, and 12 weeks but not when incubated at -5℃ or -1℃. However, the seeds incubated at -5℃ or -1℃ germinated when they were transferred to the optimal germination temperature (25℃). Up to 16.5% and 15.0% of seeds were dormant when cultured at sub-zero temperatures in a Petri dish containing filter paper and soil, respectively. In the field trial, soil temperature, moisture, and microbial communities differed significantly between soil depths. Germination-related microorganisms were more distributed on the soil surface. Seeds buried on the surface decayed rapidly from 4 weeks after burial, whereas those buried at depths of 15 cm and 30 cm germinated even 16 weeks after burial. No dormancy was detected for seeds buried at any depth. Conclusions: Although sunflower seeds did not overwinter in situ in this study, we cannot exclude the possibility that these seeds lie dormant at sub-zero temperatures and then germinate at optimal temperatures in nature.
Seed pelleting have successfully been used in many crops for better crop estab-lishment and for mechanizing seeding process for small crop seeds in developed countries. In this experiment various pelleting materials and binders were tested to get basic information on the shape, hardness and germination of pelleted seesds of cabbage (cv. Seoul Beachoo) and rice (cv: Ilpoom). PLL-11, paper clay, lime and coal ash were good materials to make smooth shape of the pellets with pel gel and AG-11 as binders, and PLL-ll as material and pelgel and AG-11 as binders were the best among them in consideration of shape and hardness together. The hardness of the pelleted seeds were differed with each other depending on both of the pelleting materials and binders. Pelleted cabbage seeds coated by pelgel as binder with different materials showed lower germination percentge than control in general, but the seeds pelleted by PLL-11 with different binders showed no restraint effects. When the cabbage seed pelleted by PLL-11 with pelgel as binder showed almost same germination percentage as control. The pH and electrical conductivity of the extract from bentonite and zeolite were very higher than other materials tested and germination percentage showed a little lower than control when the cab-bage seed planted on the filter paper damped with the extract. As a result, PLL-11 as pelleting material and pel gel and AG-11 as binder appeared the good materials to make pellets of cabbage seeds and rice in consideration of shape, hardness and germination.

To investigate the response on feeder cell cultures, protoplasts isolated from cell suspensions initiated from mature seed scutellum-derived callus of the Japonica rice variety Taipei 309, were cultured on filter membranes under various conditions. The effects of various factors, such as gelling agents, feeder cell and protoplast densities, species of feeder cells and heat shock treatment, have been investigated to improve protoplast plating efficiencies on filter membranes. Maximum protoplast plating efficiencies were obtained when protoplasts were cultured on KPR medium semi-solidified with Sea Plaque agarose at a density of $5\;\times\;10^{5}\;ml^{-1}$ protoplasts in the presence of Lolium multiflorum as feeder cells (0.5 ml pcv per 10 ml of protoplast culture medium). Pre-culture heat shock treatments for 1 min. and 5 min. to the protoplasts did not give any appreciable increase on the plating efficiency of protoplasts in the presence of feeder cells. Maltose-supplemented medium was superior for plant regeneration from protoplast-derived colonies compared with medium containing only sucrose. The plants were transferred to the glasshouse, flowered and were fertile.
This study was conducted to determine the optimum dose ranges for a mutation breeding based on the observations of a seed germination and an early growth in turfgrasses. Three warm season (Zoysiagrass, Bermudagrass, and Seashore paspalum) and four cool season turfgrasses (Kentucky bluegrass, Tall fescue, Perennial ryegrass, and Creeping bentgrass) were used in this study. We investigated the percentage of a seed germination and a seedling growth after irradiating the turfgrass seeds with various doses of gamma-ray (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, and 500 Gy). After 24 h with a gamma irradiation, the seeds were sown on the wet filter paper in a petri dish and maintained for 3 weeks at 30$^{\circ}C$ for the warm season turfgrasses and at 25$^{\circ}C$ for the cool season turfgrasses. Data on a seed germination and a seedling growth with three replications were collected. The percentage of seed germination was decreased with an increase of the gamma-ray dose. Shoot and root growth, and the fresh weight were decreased significantly as the radiation dose was increased. A radiation dose indicating a 50% growth inhibition ($LD_{50}$) with a gamma irradiation was varied among those turfgrass species used, with the highest at about 500 Gy for bermudagrass and the lowest at 100Gy for tall fescue. The optimum dose for a gamma irradiation for a selection of turfgrass mutants was considered to be about 300, 150, 500, 150, 200, 100 and 200 Gy for zoysiagrass, seashore paspalum, bermudagrass, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and creeping bentgrass, respectively.
Germination and seedling elongation of soybeans [cult. ‘Williams’] were measured at two temperatures (15 and 3$0^{\circ}C$), three seed water contents (30, 50, and 70%), and with and without polyethylene glycol-8000 (PEG) treatments. A split-plot design was used with four replications. Observations were made from two hours to eight days for each treatment combination. Seeds were soaked with 30% PEG solution with 0.2% thiram at 15 C for six days, rinsed with deionized water and dried at 25.5$^{\circ}C$ for three days. Ten treated or untreated seeds were placed on Whatman No. I (9 cm) filter paper in plastic petridishes to which sufficient deionized water was added to adjust seed moisture content to the desired level. The dishes were then sealed with parafilm and placed in a continuous programmed temperature chamber under dark condition. Seedling growth did not occur at either temperature when moisture content was 50 percent or less. Osmo-conditioning with PEG showed positive effects on seedling moisture uptake and seedling growth at 15$^{\circ}C$ but little effect at 3$0^{\circ}C$. Seedling moisture content increased rapidly early in the germination period and reached 60% at 15 C for 56 hours and at 3$0^{\circ}C$ for 28 hours. Seedling growth started when seed moisture reached a critical point of 60% at 15$^{\circ}C$, however, growth started after 20 hours of germination at 3$0^{\circ}C$. Seedlings of soybeans elongated more than four times faster at 3$0^{\circ}C$ than at 15$^{\circ}C$. Water uptake during germination was characterized by two phases in this experiment.
Effects of the heavy-ion ($^{14}$ N or $^{20}$ Ne) beam irradiation on the response of anthers, growth of calli, germination of seeds, and the early growth after the germination of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. BY-4) were investigated. Anthers precultured for 10 days before the irradiation became brown without callus or shoot induction over 20 Gy of $^{14}$ N and $^{20}$ Ne ion beam irradiation. Relative growth rate of the cultured calli was reduced by the irradiation and became brown significantly 2 weeks after the $^{14}$ N and $^{20}$ Ne ion beam irradiation over 50 Gy. The increased intensity of the heavy-ion ($^{14}$ N, $^{20}$ Ne) beam irradiation resulted in the delay of seed germination and the inhibition of the early growth both in water-treated and non-treated seeds before the irradiation. In addition, the heavy-ion beam irradiation to the imbibed seeds inhibited seed germination more than that to the non-imbibed seeds. The screening approach of non-imbibed seeds with heavy-ion beam irradiation using in vitro culture system was more useful than the filter-paper germination method in investigating the characteristics of heavy-ion beam-irradiated seed population and the screening of morphological variants at the early stage of the plant growth.
Antifungal activity on major seedborne diasease of crops was screened by the treatment of the extracts from 50 medicinal plants in vitro and in vivo. The extracts of garlic and taxus, Rheum undulatum, Achiranthes japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Oenothera lamar kiana treated with the blotting filter paper and water agar methods inhibited the growth of Pyricularia oryzae, Alternaria sesamicola, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Alternaria brassicicola among the tested plants. Antifungal activities on infected seeds by soaking methods were shown even at the dilution of the extracts by 10 times. The activity was the highest in soaking seeds at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The effect of plant extract on seed germination was not significant as compared with untreated seed. However, early growth of seedling was increased by the treatment of extracts. The extract of taxus slightly inhibited the seed germination of radish and chinese cabbage but those of Achirunthes japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis and Oenthfera lamarkiana showed severe damage on the seed germination and early growth of seedling.

Vehicle license plate recognition identifies vehicle as a unique, and have many applications in traffic monitoring field. In this paper, a vertical edge based algorithm to extract license plate within input gray-scale image is proposed. A size-and-shape filter based on seed-filling algorithm is applied to remove the edges that are impossible to be the vertical edges of license plate. Then the remaining edges are matched with each other according to some restricted conditions so as to locate license plate in input image. After license plate is extracted. normalized and segmented, the characters on it are recognized by template matching method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can deal with license plates in normal shape effectively, as well as the license plates that are out of shape due to the angle of view.
Compositae plants are known to contain biologically active substances that are allelopathic to agricultural crops as well as weed species. Aqueous or methanol extracts and plant residues from leaves of Xanthium occidentale were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) to determine its allelopathic effects, and the results showed that the extracts applied onto filter paper significantly inhibited seed germination as well as root growth of alfalfa. Aqueous leaf extracts of $40g\;L^{-1}$ were completely inhibitory on root growth of alfalfa, while root growths of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) were less sensitive. Leaf residue incorporation at $100g\;kg^{-1}$ into soil on seedling growth of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) inhibited both shoot and root fresh weights of barnyard grass by 94 and $96\%$, respectively. Methanol extracts from BuOn and EtOAc fractions of X. occidentale reduced alfalfa root growth more than did those from hexane and water fractions. The results based on bioassay of extracts and residues show that X. occidentale had potent an allelopathic activity against other plant species.
