The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of oral health education experience on needs for oral health education in children and adolescents in elementary and secondary schools. A self-administered survey was conducted on the students in elementary, middle and high schools located in the city of Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, from October 1 to 31, 2018. The data that were collected from 327 students were analyzed by SPSS 21.0. Statistical data on frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were obtained, and t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were carried out. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the subjects got 2.25 on a three-point scale in self-rated oral health status. This score was above average, which indicated that the students thought they were in good oral health. As for problems with oral health, dental caries was given the highest score of 2.48 on a five-point scale, followed by oral malodor with 2.35. Second, the students who experienced oral health education accounted for 69.1 percent, and the students who felt the need for this education represented 82.6 percent. As for educational content desired, the biggest group of 57.8 percent hoped to learn about how to prevent and manage dental caries, and the second largest group of 17 percent wanted to learn about how to take care of oral health during orthodontic treatment. Third, as a result of investigating the state of oral health education by the grade of school, the elementary school students had more oral health education experience than the middle and high school students, and the middle school students placed the most importance on the necessity of oral health education. The differences were statistically significant. Fourth, as a result of analyzing the correlation between oral health education experience and the necessity of oral health education, the students who had more oral health education experience asked more for this education, which implies that there was a statistically significant positive correlation. The findings of the study ascertained that oral health education should be provided for students in childhood and adolescence to boost the level of their oral health knowledge and change their oral health attitude in a positive manner. If oral health practice programs that connect schools, local communities and families with one another are developed to guide the oral health behaviors of teenagers in the right direction, it will make a contribution to the promotion of oral health.

The present study aimed to evaluate the validity of resin infiltration in improving color stability after tooth whitening. Enamel samples were extracted from 40 healthy bovine upper incisors, and primary staining and whitening were performed. After that, specimens were randomly divided into 3 groups : resin infiltration group (n = 15, RI group), resin adhesive group (n = 15, RA group), and control group (n = 10). Secondary staining was performed on all samples. Coloration was assessed 5 times as follows: initial color, immediately after staining, after whitening, after resin application, and after secondary staining. Color was measured using a spectrophotometer and recorded by using the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color space. The color changes after primary staining for the RI, RA, and control groups were $12.16{\pm}3.50$, $12.16{\pm}3.38$, and $15.81{\pm}6.39$, whereas those after secondary staining were $15.21{\pm}7.19$, $15.93{\pm}4.31$, and $26.62{\pm}17.89$. Color changes after secondary staining showed a significant difference between the RI and control groups. In the within-group comparison between primary and secondary staining, there was no significant difference found in the RI group only (p = 0.26). The results suggest that Color stability after tooth whitening can be improved using resin infiltration.

The radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cyst which is caused by pulpal inflammation, pulp death, and secondary to trauma or dental caries. Usually, the radicular cyst is asymptomatic, but a secondary inflammation can cause pain, swelling and redness. Getting larger, the radicular cyst can cause facial asymmetry and paresthesia by pressure on nerves. It requires conservative endodontic treatment or surgical approach. When the size of cyst is large or invasion of the adjacent tissue is not expected, cyst enucleation is carried out. And most of the case can be completely cured and shows low recurrence. In these radicular cysts cases, by cyst enucleation or apicoectomy after root canal treatment simultaneously, the infected teeth can be preserved successfully.
Numerous oral and maxillofacial surgeons have found facial space infections after tooth extraction. Most of these infections can be managed easily, but some of them could be life-threatening. Among the facial infections, temporal space infections are rare. Most temporal space infections could be observed as secondary to maxillary third molar infections, maxillary sinusitis, and maxillary sinus fractures. Note, however, that there are insufficient studies on temporal space abscess due to mandibular second molars, especially with acupuncture. A 74-year-old female came to our hospital with severe trismus and facial swelling on the right temporal, buccal, posterior auricular, and cervical regions. The patient had undergone extraction of tooth #47 secondary to dental caries by a general dentist about a month ago. After the dental procedure, the patient had been treated with acupuncture therapy around the right temporomandibular joint area at the oriental medicine clinic. We performed emergency incision and drainage under general anesthesia and started antibiotic treatment with IV ampicillin/sulbactam 3 g every 24 hours and vancomycin 1 g every 24 hours for 5 days. The patient's symptoms subsided and ultimately disappeared. Temporal space abscess after mandibular molar extraction is quite rare. In this case, the spreading mechanism against gravity is considered to be acupuncture therapy.

The improvement of esthetic dentistry has been accelerated from the development of composite resin and dentin-enamel adhesive since 1980's. The indirect composite resin restorations have more accurate proximal contact point and occlusal form than direct restoration. And the side effect of resin shrinkage is minimal because the amount of composite used in oral cavity is limited in cement space. As a results, marginal leakage, hypersensitivity, secondary caries, and discoloration are significantly diminished. The first generation laboratory composite resin used in indirect resin restoration had been widespread in 1980's and the second generation laboratory composite resins were developed in 1990's. The second generation laboratory composite resins are called Ceramic Polymer. The physical properties of Ceramic Polymer are improved because of high content of inorganic filler, and the esthetics and biocompatibility are better than that of the first generation resin. So the application range using composite resin have been broadened. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Targis & Vectris system that is classified to second generation laboratory composite and to report several cases in which the system was utilized for restoration.

This case report presents two maxillary anterior cases for clinical crown lengthening by forced eruption. In the first case, clinical crown of maxillary right lateral incisor was almost lost by fracture. Forced eruption using intracoronal splint and elastic thread accomplished vertical root movement successfully. Then, post & core was inserted and final restoration was harmonious with adjacent teeth. In the second case, the crown portion of maxillary right central incisor was almost mutilated by secondary caries. Forced eruption using removable Hawley appliance and elastic accomplished vertical root movement successfully. Then, post & core was inserted and final restoration was placed. In conclusion, clinical crown lengthening by vertical root movement can be accomplished by a simple appliance without any sacrifice of periodontal support in selected patients. A clinical crown so created can be restored to adequate function and arch integrity without compromising adjacent teeth. Therefore, forced eruption is preferred in the anterior region of the dentition where esthetics is of major concern.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to compare and investigate oral health status between Korean adults living in Korea and the US. Methods : Subjects were 1,785 persons including 399 Korean adults living in Virginia, US and those from the second year 2011 of the 5th National Health and Nutrition Survey. Darta were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 for frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc Tukey. Results : 1. In general characteristics, adult living in Korea revealed higher DT and DMFT than those in the US. 2. In oral health status, adult living in Korea revealed higher DT and DMFT than those in the US. 3. The variables affecting oral health status in Korean adults in the US were age, private health insurance and number of tooth brushing. 4. The variables affecting oral health status in adults in Korea included gender, age, private health insurance, smoking, drinking, use of secondary oral hygienic products and number of tooth brushing. Conclusions : It is necessary to emphasize the importance of oral health care and to establish the oral health education in dental care agencies.
A 31-year-old male with the complaint of severe limitation of mouth opening was referred to our department of Chonbuk National University Hospital. The physical status of the patient was hyposthenic. Extraoral examination showed no condylar movement of the both temporomandibular joints, no pain, no facial swelling or paresthesia. Intraoral examination showed several cervical caries on the upper anterior teeth, and gingival swelling on the whole dentition. Transcranial view showed no condylar movement, and narrowing of joint spaces. Chest P-A view showed straightening of thoracic, lumbar spine, and squaring of vertebrae of the same spines. Conventional lateral radiograph of cervical spine showed calcification of the intervertebral ligament. Computed tomograph showed extensive bone formation between temporal bone and the condylar head at both sides. Laboratory findings showed positive reaction on HLA-B27 histocompatibility antigen and increased level of IgA, IgG, ESR. Based on the clinical, radiographic, and the laboratary findings, final diagnosis was made as bony ankylosis of the both temporomandibular joints secondary to ankylosing spondylitis.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between age at menarche and two major oral diseases. Methods: Data from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018) were used. The participants included girls and women aged 12 years and above. Thedataofa total of 7,420 participants were analyzed. Statistical analyses were performed using complex samples cross-tabulation analysis and complex samples general linear model. Results: The average age at menarche of those aged 12 to 80 years was 13.81 years. The age at menarche was found to be associated with decayed-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) (p<0.05). When the age at menarche was nine years, DMFT was 4.20 when it was 19 years, DMFT was 10.80. The age at menarche was found to be associated with periodontal tissue state (p<0.05). The group with early menarche age had healthier periodontal tissues (17.1%), whereas the group with late menarche age had more unhealthy periodontal tissues (17.9%) (p<0.001). Conclusions: The age at menarche was associated with two major oral diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to provide women with oral hygiene care and oral health education to prevent major oral diseases before their secondary sex characteristics appear.
This article complies a survey on the replacement of the posterior restorations and accesses possible factors that influence the replacement of posterior restorations. The data was collected from patients that visited department of conservative dentistry from Dec 1st 2003, to Sep 3rd 2004. Teeth was restricted to posterior permanent teeth. 9 dentists recorded age, gender of patients, tooth location, cavity farm and restorative material. They rated marginal adaptation, anatomic form, secondary caries of old restoration by modified Ryge criteria system. The statistical analysis was performed with Chi square test (p < 0.05) for replacement ratio according to patients, tooth factor and One way ANOVA was performed for comparison of old restoration according to restorative material. The results were as follows; 1. The female (62%) was statistically higher ratio than the male (38%). 2. The distribution of replacement case according to age, the rate of replacement was in descending order, 20's (38.3%), 40's (16.8%), 30's (15.9%), 10's (11.1%), 50's (9.2%), 60's (8.7%). 3. The rate of replacement was 88% for molar and 12% for premolar (p $gt; 0.05). 4. The rate of replacement was 39% for maxillar and 61% for mandible (p $gt; 0.05). 5. The material of restorations was amalgam (69%), gold inlay (17%), composite resin (13%). 6. In rating system by modified Ryge criteria system on margin adaptation, there was statistically significant difference between amalgam and gold inlay. But on anatomic form and caries, there was no statistically significant difference among the material of restorations.
