Distribution characteristics of organophosphorous pesticides (OPs) were studied over the period from May to September, 2006 in Asan Bay, Korea. During the study period, 28 kinds of organophosphorous pesticides dissolved in surface water and adsorbed on suspended particle were measured. In the surface water, the dominant OPs were IBP and DDVP, and the concentration were in the ranges from not detected to 2014.4 ng/L for IBP and 3.2 to 696.3 ng/L for DDVP. The highest concentrations of OPs in the surface waters in Asan Bay appeared in July and August showing that seasonal distributions of OPs depend on application time and precipitation. The concentrations of OPs generally decreased with the increase of distance from the mouth of Asan Bay, implying progressive dilution of pesticides in the estuarine system. OPs residue in Asan Bay was relatively higher than in other area of Korea. The concentrations of the observed OPs concentrations did not exceed the seawater quality standard of Korea. DDVP, IBP, Diazinon, Phorate, Azinphos ethyl and Chlorfenvinfos had higher adsorption capacity onto suspended particle than the other OPs. In the study area, adsorption coefficients $(K_d)$ of OPs were closely related to the Log $K_ow$ of each compound.

Bottom sea waters in eight stations including from inner bay to outer bay to understand the importance of the submarine groundwater discharge for the environmental assessment of Chinhae Bay was collected in August 1999 and January 2000. Generally, /sup 222/Rn is very useful tracer to assess the submarine groundwater discharge because it is 2-4 orders of magnitude more concentrated in groundwater compared to surface water. The /sup 222/Rn activities ranged between about 33 to 182 dpm/100kg within the bay. Higher activities more than 100 dpm/100kg were found at the inner bay. The /sup 226/Ra activities, its parent, however, were little different between stations. /sup 222/Rn activities at the same station varied with season. It suggests that the major source of /sup 222/Rn is not from the bottom sediment, but from the change of submarine groundwater discharge by precipitation. The contents of Cl/sup -/ and SO/sub 4//sup 2-/ in the groundwater of Wonjeon-ri were very high as 1,312 and 369 ppm, respectively, indicating that this groundwater along the Chinhae coast was affected by seawater. Therefore, the submarine groundwater in the inner Bay may discharge to the overlying water. It indicates that these submarine groundwater discharges may play an important role as another important source of nutrients in the Chinhae Bay, because groundwater around the Chinhae Bay showed high concentration of dissolved inorganic nutrients (average , nitrate>174 μM, silicate>262 μM). Therefore, further studies are required to assess the contribution by the submarine groundwater discharge in the biogeochemical processes of the Chinhae Bay.
Benthic diatoms are known as a good food for shellfish in nature and in commercial hatchery of Jeju Island, Korea. Grammatophora marina is commonly found as dominant benthic micro-algae in Jeju coastal waters throughout the year. To know the best growth conditions of this species, culture was done in terms of three parameters; water temperature, salinity and nutrients. Each parameter was controlled by temperature of 15, 20 and 25°C; salinity of 25, 30 and 35 psu; and nutrient concentrations of 50, 100 and 200%. F/2 media was used with artificial seawater for the culture, which was continued for two weeks with L:D cycle 12:12 by using fluorescent light. Maximum specific growth rate was recorded 1.68 d–1 at temperature of 25°C with salinity of 35 psu and nutrient concentration of 200% on 6th day during the culture period. Maximum biomass was also observed 4.9 × 105 cells mL–1 in the same condition. This species may belong to the euryhaline and eutrophic habitat with warm condition. For nutritional aspects of this species, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were measured. The value of protein, lipid and carbohydrate was 4.96%, 15.82% and 5.65%, respectively. The antioxidant activities of 80% methanolic extract were 46.7%, 23.7% and 23.8% on DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylydrazy) radical, superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging, respectively. Percentage metal chelating activity was 81.2%. Enzymatic extracts of Alcalase and Ultraflow showed remarkable scavenging activities on DPPH radical (86.5% and 57.2%, respectively), and superoxide anion scavenging activities were 45.3% and 41.4% from Kojizyme and Viscozyme extracts, respectively. Extract of Protomex revealed 24.8% activity on hydrogen peroxide and Neutase showed 30.8% on hydroxyl radical scavenging effects. Celluclast and Viscozyme extracts showed 33.2% and 32.1% activities on nitric oxide scavenging, respectively, while Alcalase showed 61.5% on metal chelating. This species contains higher lipids among the biochemical compounds and higher metal chelating activities from both 80% methanolic and enzymatic extracts.
Effects of different salinity levels on spawning performance, embryonic development and early viability of a euryhaline medaka species, Oryzias dancena, were examined. O. dancena were able to spawn eggs in a wide range of salinity from 0 to 70$^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$, however, the spawning frequency was lowered in complete freshwater (0$^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$) and in highly salted water (70$^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$). Fertilization success was negatively affected when the environmental salinity was higher than the salt concentration found in normal seawater. Embryonic viability and hatching success were also inversely related with the salinity levels. Typical abnormality was observed in developing embryos incubated at high salinities (30, 45 and 60$^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$). In addition, the time to hatch was significantly delayed with increasing salinities: peak hatching occurred at 12~14 days post fertilization (dpf) in freshwater and at least at 17 to 18 dpf in 60$^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$. Mean survival rates of the hatched larvae up to 7 days post hatching (dph) were at least 97% in salinity levels ranging from 0 to 30$^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$. However, larvae reared in 45 and 60$^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$ experienced significant mortality, especially in the early phase, resulting in only 75% and 64% survival rates up to 7 dph, respectively.

Rates of photosynthesis and respiration of Laminaria japonica sporophytes cultivated on the southeastern coast of Korea were monthly measured in situ and under constant temperature and nitrogen concentration in laboratory from February to July 1996 in order to understand the seasonal photosynthetic performance of this alga. P-I (the relationship between photosynthsis and irradiance) parameters measured in situ varied seasonally. Photosynthetic capacity ($P_{max}$) reached its maximum in March (6.64 mg $O_2{\cdot}gdw^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$) and gradually decreased thereafter. Photosynthetic efficiency (${\alpha}$), which ranged from 0.026 to 0.106, generally showed a similar pattern with the $P_{max}$, curve. Correlation between respiration and $P_{max}$, was not significant (Spearman's rank correlation, p>0.05); respiration rate, which varied between 0.25 and 0.83 mg $O_2{\cdot}gdw^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$, showed no gradual decline from March. $P_{max}$ in situ significantly correlated with the relative growth rate of frond weight (Spearman's rank correlation, p<0.01) and this result means that the amount of accumulated materials in body increased with the increment of $P_{max}$. Compared $P_{max}$, in situ with that in the laboratory. The lower $P_{max}$ in February was probably caused by the effect of lower seawater temperature at this time. The decrease in $P_{max}$ after March, however, was primarily attributable to the thickness of blade as the plants got old. Comparison of P-I parameters measured for different size groups in April, explained the negative relationship between $P_{max}$ and frond thickness.

In order to estimate the uranium flux from seawater to sediments, we took pore water samples and deployed benthic chambers on seafloor of Chonsu Bay, Korea. The uranium flux across the sediment-water interface was estimated from the pore water to be 0.112-0.566 mg/$m^2yr$, corresponding to a removal flux of $4.3-21.5{\times}10^7$ gU/yr for the entire Yellow Sea. Nutrient fluxes from sediment to bottom water were estimated to be 135.6 mmol/$m^2yr$ for ammonia, 228.2 mmol/$m^2yr$ for nitrate, 36.8 mmol/$m^2yr$ for phosphate and 23.9 mmol/$m^2yr$ for silicate. The redox boundary, based on the distribution of pore water nitrate and solid phase manganese, was located at 3-5 cm below the sediment surface. Phosphate flux obtained by benthic chambers was 28.S mmol/$m^2yr$. On the other hand, estimates of uranium and silicate fluxes were orders of magnitude greater than those based on pore water profiles. Flux estimates on the basis of pore water concentration is believed to have greater reliability than those obtained from benthic chamber data.

Cathodic protection is recognized as the most cost-effective and technically appropriate corrosion prevention method for the submerged zone of offshore structures, ships, and deep-sea facilities. When cathodic protection is applied, the cathodic currents cause dissolved oxygen reduction, generating hydroxyl ions near the polarized surface that increase the interfacial pH and result in enhanced carbonate ion concentration and precipitation of an inorganic layer whose principal component is calcium carbonate. Depending on the potential, magnesium hydroxide can also precipitate. This mixed deposit is generally called "calcareous deposit." This layer functions as a barrier against the corrosive environment, leading to a decrease in current demand. Hence, the importance of calcareous deposits for the effective, efficient operation of marine cathodic protection systems is recognized by engineers and scientists concerned with cathodic protection in submerged marine environments. Calcareous deposit formation on a marine structure depends on the potential, current, pH, temperature, pressure, sea-water chemistry, flow, and time; deposit quality is significantly influenced by these factors. This study determines how calcareous deposits form in sea water, and assesses the interrelationship of formation conditions (such as the sea water temperature and surface condition of steel), deposited structure, and properties and the effectiveness of the cathodic protection.
Residues of ampicillin and amoxicillin in the muscles of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus were investigated after oral doses of 20 mg/kg body weight/day of ampicillin and 40 mg/kg body weight/day of amoxicillin in a first examination and 40 mg/kg body weight/day of ampicillin and 80 mg/kg body weight/day of amoxicillin in a second examination for 5-6 days. The ranges of seawater temperatures in the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ examinations were $13.4-15.6^{\circ}C$ and $16.8-21.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Ampicillin and amoxicillin concentrations were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The average recovery rates of ampicillin and amoxicillin in fish samples ranged from 84.8-95.2% and 100.8-103.8%, respectively. Residual concentrations in the olive flounder peaked on the $5^{th}$ day, with average concentrations of 0.075 mg/kg and 0.311 mg/kg in the $1^{st}$ examination, and 0.098 mg/kg and 0.630 mg/kg in the $2^{nd}$ examination for ampicillin and amoxicillin, respectively, with maximum concentrations in muscle. In the $1^{st}$ examination, ampicillin concentrations in olive flounder after withdrawals of 1 and 3 days were 0.041 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively, and amoxicillin concentrations after withdrawals of 1 day and 10 days were 0.172 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively. In the $2^{nd}$ examination, the ampicillin concentrations in olive flounder after withdrawals of 1 and 3 days were 0.041 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively, and amoxicillin concentration after withdrawals of 1 day and 10 days were 0.172 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively. We suggest that the recommended withdrawal periods should be 3 days for ampicillin and 10 days for amoxicillin in the olive flounder.
We have isolated a bacterial strain that tends to kill P. micans from the mixed culture of p. minns plus seawater filtrate (poresize, 0.8 $\mu$m) collected at Masan bay in July 1996, in which the mixed culture grown in the f/2 medium. According to the experimental results of the isolated bacterium such as fatty acids analysis, morphological and biochemical characteristic tests, the strain was supposed to be a Pseudomonas and then it was named as Pseudomonas sp. LG-2. The killing effect of Pseudomonas sp. LG-2 against P. micans was proportionally increased with the concentrations of culture filtrate (pore size, 0.8 $\mu$m) is well as with the number of bacterium inoculated. In the mixed culture inoculated with $1.3\times10^6$ cells/ml of Pseudomonas sp. LG-2, the number of P. micans (2,000 cells/ml) was gradually decreased and then killed below 100 cells/ml within 7 days. In addition, the culture filtrate with $30\%$ of final concentration revealed a significant killing effect against P. micans around 3 days after culture. In the relationship between killing effects and growth stage of Pseudomonas sp. LG-2, the culture filtrate at lag phase has little effects on P. micans. In constant, the culture filtrate at mid-log phase showed the killing effect by decreasing P. micans to 112 in number within 5 days. In particular, the culture filtrate at stationary phase showed a significant killing effect against P. micans in which the majority of it was killed after 3 day culture. The species specificity of killing effects of Pseudomonas sp. LG-2 against 5 species of dinoflagellate was only found in P. micans and Scrippsiella trochoidea.

This study was carried out to identify the characteristics of hydrochemistry controlling groundwater chemical condition in a repository site of Gyeongju. For this study, 12 bore holes of all monitoring bore holes in the study area were selected and total 46 groundwater samples were collected with depth. In addition, 3 surfacewater samples and 1 seawater sample were collected. For water samples, cations and anions were analyzed. The environmental isotopes(${\delta}^{18}O-{\delta}D$, Tritium, ${\delta}^{13}C,\;{\cdot}{\delta}^{34}S$) were also analyzed to trace the origin of water and solutes. The result of ${\delta}^{18}O\;and\;{\delta}D$ analysis showed that surface water and groundwater were originated from precipitation. Tritium concentrations of groundwater decreased with depth but high concentrations of tritium indicated that groundwater was recharged recently. The results of ion and correlation analysis showed that groundwater types of the study area were represented by Ca-Na-$HCO_3$ and Na-Cl-$SO_4$, which was caused by sea spray and water-rock interaction. Especially, high ratio of Na content in groundwater resulted from ion exchange. For redox condition of groundwater, the values of DO and Eh decreased with depth, which indicated that reducing condition was formed in deeper groundwater. In addtion, high concentration of Fe and Mn showed that redox condition of groundwater was controlled by the reduction of Fe and Mn oxides.
