A study on parsimonious periodic autoregressive model (모수 절약 주기적 자기회귀 모형에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes a parsimonious periodic autoregressive (PAR) model. The proposed model performance is evaluated through an analysis of Korean unemployment rate series that is compared with existing models. We exploit some common features among each seasonality and confirm it by LR test for the parsimonious PAR model in order to impose a parsimonious structure on the PAR model. We observe that the PAR model tends to be superior to existing seasonal time series models in mid- and long-term forecasts. The proposed parsimonious model significantly improves forecasting performance.

Performance for simple combinations of univariate forecasting models (단변량 시계열 모형들의 단순 결합의 예측 성능)

  • In this paper, we consider univariate time series models that are well known in the field of forecasting and we study on forecasting performance for their simple combinations. The univariate time series models include exponential smoothing methods and ARIMA (autoregressive integrated moving average) models, their extended models, and non-seasonal and seasonal random walk models, which is frequently used as benchmark models for forecasting. The median and mean are simply used for the combination method, and the data set used for performance evaluation is M3-competition data composed of 3,003 various time series data. As results of evaluating the performance by sMAPE (symmetric mean absolute percentage error) and MASE (mean absolute scaled error), we assure that the simple combinations of the univariate models perform very well in the M3-competition dataset.

  • Irregularity data inspected by EM-120, an railway inspection system in Korea includes unavoidable incomplete and erratic information, so it is encountered lots of problem to analyse those data without appropriate pre-data-refining processes. In this research, for the efficient management and maintenance of railway system, characteristics and problems of the detected track irregularity data have been analyzed and efficient processing techniques were developed to solve the problems. The correlation between track irregularity and seasonal changes was conducted based on ARIMA model analysis. Finally, time series analysis was carried out by various forecasting model, such as regression, exponential smoothing and ARIMA model, to determine the appropriate optimal models for forecasting track irregularity progress.

  • This study is on forecasting the electricity consumption of an industrial manufacturing building called GGM from January 2014 to April 2017. We fitted models using SARIMA, SARIMA + GARCH, Holt-Winters method and ARIMA with Fourier transformation. We also forecasted electricity consumption for one month ahead and compared the predicted root mean square error as well as the predicted error rate of each model. The electricity consumption of GGM fluctuates weekly and annually; therefore, SARIMA + GARCH model considering both volatility and seasonality, shows the best fit and prediction.

Effects of Macroeconomic Conditions and External Shocks for Port Business: Forecasting Cargo Throughput of Busan Port Using ARIMA and VEC Models

  • The Port of Busan is currently ranked as the seventh largest container port worldwide in terms of cargo throughput. However, port competition in the Far-East region is fierce. The growth rate of container throughput handled by the port of Busan has recently slowed down. In this study, we analyzed how economic conditions and multiple external shocks could influence cargo throughput and identified potential implications for port business. The aim of this study was to build a model to accurately forecast port throughput using the ARIMA model, which could incorporate external socio-economic shocks, and the VEC model considering causal variables having long-term effects on transshipment cargo. Findings of this study suggest that there are three main areas affecting container throughput in the port of Busan, namely the Russia-Ukraine war, the increased competition for transshipment cargo of Chinese ports, and the weaker growth rate of the Korean economy. Based on the forecast, in order for the Port of the Port of Busan to continue to grow as a logistics hub in Northeast-Asia, policy intervention is necessary to diversify the demand for transshipment cargo and maximize benefits of planned infrastructural investments.

Study on the Forecasting and Relationship of Busan Cargo by ARIMA and VAR·VEC (ARIMA와 VAR·VEC 모형에 의한 부산항 물동량 예측과 관련성연구)

  • More accurate forecasting of port cargo in the global long-term recession is critical for the implementation of port policy. In this study, the Busan Port container volume (export cargo and transshipment cargo) was estimated using the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and the vector error correction (VEC) model considering the causal relationship between the economic scale (GDP) of Korea, China, and the U.S. as well as ARIMA, a single volume model. The measurement data was the monthly volume of container shipments at the Busan port J anuary 2014-August 2019. According to the analysis, the time series of import and export volume was estimated by VAR because it was relatively stable, and transshipment cargo was non-stationary, but it has cointegration relationship (long-term equilibrium) with economic scale, interest rate, and economic fluctuation, so estimated by the VEC model. The estimation results show that ARIMA is superior in the stationary time-series data (local cargo) and transshipment cargo with a trend are more predictable in estimating by the multivariate model, the VEC model. Import-export cargo, in particular, is closely related to the size of our country's economy, and transshipment cargo is closely related to the size of the Chinese and American economies. It also suggests a strategy to increase transshipment cargo as the size of China's economy appears to be closer than that of the U.S.

The Forecast of the Cargo Transportation for the North Port in Busan, using Time Series Models (시계열 모형을 이용한 부산 북항의 물동량 예측)

  • In this paper the cargo transportation were forecasted for the North Port in Busan through time series models. The cargo transportation were classified into three large groups; container, oil, general cargo. The seasonal indexes of existing cargo transportation were firstly calculated, and optimum models were chosen among exponential smoothing models and ARIMA models. The monthly cargo transportation were forecasted with applying the seasonal index in annual cargo transportation expected from the models. Thus, the cargo transportation in 2011 and 2015 were forecasted about 22,900 myriad ton and 24,654 myriad ton respectively. It was estimated that container cargo volume would play the role of locomotive in the increase of the future cargo transportation. On the other hand, the oil and general cargo have little influence upon it.

Analysis of Global Shipping Market Status and Forecasting the Container Freight Volume of Busan New port using Time-series Model (글로벌 해운시장 현황 분석 및 시계열 모형을 이용한 부산 신항 컨테이너 물동량 예측에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we analyze the trends of the international shipping market and the domestic and foreign factors of the crisis of the domestic shipping market, and identify the characteristics of the recovery of the Busan New Port trade volume which has decreased since the crisis of the domestic shipping market We quantitatively analyzed the future volume of Busan New Port and analyzed the trends of the prediction and recovery trends. As a result of analyzing Busan New Port container cargo volume by using big data analysis tool R, the variation of Busan New Cargo container cargo volume was estimated by ARIMA model (1,0,1) (1,0,1)[12] Estimation error, AICc and BIC were the most optimal ARIMA models. Therefore, we estimated the estimated value of Busan New Port trade for 36 months by using ARIMA (1, 0, 1)[12], which is the optimal model of Busan New Port trade, and estimated 13,157,184 TEU, 13,418,123 TEU, 13,539,884 TEU, and 4,526,406 TEU, respectively, indicating that it increased by about 2%, 2%, and 1%.

A Time Series Analysis for the Monthly Variation of $SO_2$ in the Certain Areas (ARIMA model에 의한 서울시 일부지역 $SO_2$ 오염도의 월변화에 대한 시계열분석)

  • The typical ARIMA model which was developed by Box and Jenkins, was applied to the monthly $SO_2$ data collected at Seoungsoo and Oryudong in metropolitan area over five years, 1982 to 1986. To find out the changing pattern of $SO_2$ concentration, autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation analysis were undertaken. The three steps of time series model building were followed and the residual series was found to be a random white noise. The results of this study is summarized as follows. 1) The monthly $SO_2$ series was found to be a non-stationary series which which has a periodicity of 12 months. After eliminating the periodicity by differencing, the monthly $SO_2$ series became a stationary series. 2) The ARIMA seasonal model of the $SO_2$ was determined to be ARIMA $(1, 0, 0)(0, 1, 0,)_{12}$ model. 3) The model equations based on the prediction were: for Seoungsoodong: $Y_t = 0.5214Y_{t-1} + Y_{t-12} - 0.5214Y_{t-13} + a_t$ for Oryudong: $Y_t = 0.8549Y_{t-1} + Y_{t-12} - 0.8549Y_{t-13} + a_t$ 4) The validity of the model identified was checked by compairing the measured $SO_2$ values and one-month-ahead predicted values. The result of correlation and regression analysis is as follows. Seoungsoodong: $Y = 0.8710X + 0.0062 r = 0.8768$ Oryudong : $Y = 0.8758X + 0.0073 r = 0.9512$

Prediction of Sales on Some Large-Scale Retailing Types in South Korea

  • Purpose - This paper aims to examine several time series models to predict sales of department stores and discount store markets in South Korea, while other previous trial has performed sales of convenience stores and supermarkets. In addition, optimal predicted values on the underlying model can be got and be applied to distribution industry. Research design, data, and methodology - Two retailing types, under investigation, are homogeneous and comparable in size based on 86 realizations sampled from January 2010 to February in 2017. To accomplish the purpose of this research, both ARIMA model and exponential smoothing methods are, simultaneously, utilized. Furthermore, model-fit measures may be exploited as important tools of the optimal model-building. Results - By applying Holt-Winters' additive seasonality method to sales of two large-scale retailing types, persisting increasing trend and fluctuation around the constant level with seasonal pattern, respectively, will be predicted from May in 2017 to February in 2018. Conclusions - Considering 2017-2018 forecasts for sales of two large-scale retailing types, it is important to predict future sales magnitude and to produce the useful information for reforming financial conditions and related policies, so that the impacts of any marketing or management scheme can be compared against the do-nothing scenario.
