Circulatory and respiratory activities were observed in men exposed to the environment of engine room of a cruising Republic of Korea Navy ship and compared to the control values obtained in an ordinary laboratory room on land. The environment of an engine room of cruising navy ship was presumed to be a multiple stress acting on men. The environment of the engine room included high temperature $(35-42^{\circ}C)$, low relative humidity (20-38% saturation), vibration (about 7 cycles per second), rolling and pitching of ship and noises. Sixteen men were divided into two groups consisted of each 8 subjects. Subjects of sea duty group had experience of continuous on board duty averaging 3.5 years. Men of land duty group had no experience of on board activity. On land observations were made on one day prior to the boarding and leaving the port and four days after landing. In between observations in the engine room were made on the first, 5 th, 9 th, 12 th, and 14 th day of on board activity. The whole experimental period lasted for 20 days. Measurements on circulatory and respiratory parameters were at standing resting state (after 30 minutes standing in the case of on land study and 15 minutes in engine room study) and within one minute after cessation of on the spot running of which rhythm was 30/min. and lasted for 5 minutes. Oxygen consumption and pulmonary function test were done in the period of two minutes from the 3rd to 5th minutes of running. The following results were obtained. 1. Body temperature showed no change regardless of group difference or on land or on board measurements. 2. Pulse rate increased markedly after boarding the ship id both groups. Pulse rate increased from the first day on board at rest and after exercise as compared to the on land control value. This increase in pulse rate was more marked after exercise. Sea duty group showed less increase in pulse rate at rest than the land duty group. Standing and resting pulse rate of sea duty group on lam was 81 and increased to 87 at the 5th day on board and remained smaller than the land duty group throughout the period on board. Control standing and resting pulse rate of land duty group on land was 76 and reached 89 at the 9th day on board and thereafter decreased a little. Pulse rate of land duty group at rest on board remained greater than that of sea duty group throughout the period on board. 3. Systolic blood pressure of sea duty group increased after boarding the ship and remained higher than the control value on land. In the land duty group, however, systolic blood pressure decreased during the period on board the ship. Diastolic blood pressure decreased in both groups. 4. Resting breathing rate of land duty group increased and remained higher than the control value on land. In sea duty group, however, resting breathing rate showed a transient increase on the 1st day on board and decreased thereafter to the control value on land and kept the same level throughout the period of cruise. Absolute value of breathing rate in the sea duty group was greater than the land duty group both at rest and after exercise. 5. There was a lowering of breathing efficiency in both groups. Thus, increases in tidal volume and minute ventilation volume and decreases in maximum breathing capacity, vital capacity, capacity ratio and air velocity Index were observed after boarding the ship. An increase in ventilation equivalent was also observed in both groups. The lowering of breathing efficiency was more marked in the land duty group than the sea duty group. 6. Energy expediture increased in both groups during their stay on the ship and was more marked in the sea duty group. 7, Lactate concentration in venous blood at rest and after exercise increased after boarding the ship and no group difference was observed.
Interpretation of high-resolution seismic profiles from the southeastern continental shelf of Korea reveals that the sedimentary deposits consist of seven seismic units formed during the late Quaternary. These units comprise lowstand, transgressive, and highstand systems tracts. The lowstand systems tract consists of a lowstand prograding wedge (SU1) and a mass flow deposit (SU2) including slumps and slides. The transgressive systems tract contains four seismic units: an ancient beach/shoreface deposit (SU3), a channel-fill deposit (SU4), a transgressive sand layer (SU5), and a transgressive sand ridge (SU6). The highstand systems tract consists of an inner-shelf mud deposit (SU7) derived from the Nakdong and Seomjin rivers during the last 6 ka when sea level was close to the present level.

As an important fishing ground in the southern coast of Korea, Jinhae Bay is characterized by a high level of fisheries production. However, its marine-ecosystem has shifted owing to environmental changes such as industrial development and high water temperatures over the decades. This study analyzes the fisheries production, discards, mean trophic level, and fishing-in-balance index using annual fishing data from five regions surrounding Jinhae Bay for the period 2005-2022, as well as using additional forecasting trends by 2027 using ARIMA (Auto Regressive Intergrated Moving Average). The results shows, that the production in Goseong will decrease continuously by 2027, as compared with that in other areas. Additionally, byproduct management is considered necessary in Tongyeong. For the marine-ecosystem index, Tongyeong indicates stable catch ratio of large fish species and a fishing-in-balance exceeding 0. Finally, the annual catch variation for six pelagic fish species in Jinhae Bay by 2060 is estimated based on the IPCC climate-change scenario, in which the recent low level that decreased to approximately 20 thousand ton in early 2020 is projected to recover to approximately 40 thousand ton in the 2020s and 2040s, followed by an incremental decline by 2060.

A total of 50 diatom species and 1 subspecies belonging to 31 genera except Chaetoceros resting spores were identified in the 45 sediments subsampled from a gravity core GH98-1223 collected from the western Hokkaido Island located in the northeastern East Sea (Sea of Japan). The most dominant species is Thalassionema nitzschioides (Grunow) Hustedt, ranging 29 to 59% of the total assemblages, and most species including Denticulopsis seminae (Simonsen and Kanaya) Simonsen and Pseudoeunotia doliolus (Wallich) Grunow were less than 5% in average. Frequencies of cold-water species are generally higher than those of warm-water species and the vertical distribution of cold-water species was largely opposite to that of warm-water species in spite of ecological habitat difference. Frequency of cold-water species, D. seminae is reverse to that of P. doliolus, an indicator of the Tsushima Warm Current, which is consistent with diatom temperature value (T$_{d}$ value). The variation of T$_{d}$ values shows that the upper part of core with greater-than-average T$_{d}$ values represents postglacial warming trend. These T$_{d}$ values clearly demonstrate that the study area located in the northern part of the East Sea is gradually influenced by Tsushima Warm Current. In addition, the zig-zag variation in the lower part reflects the unstable seawater for diatom habitat. Chaetoceros resting spores indicating productivity and upwelling was 5.3 to 40%, with maximum peak at 80 cm. Chaetoceros resting spores/Chaetoceros vegetative cells, an indicator of relative amounts of biogenic material in the sediments was high at the upper 80 cm level, corresponding to the change of T$_{d}$ values. On the basis of diatom assemblages, the northeastern part of East Sea has experienced the effects of Tsushima Warm Current during the postglacial period of Holocene, which is similar to the modem climatic environment. However, the variation of P. doliolus reflects that the intensity of Tsushima Warm Current has been oscillated in the East Sea.
It has been appeared since 1979 that the pattern of laver culture changes from household management to entrepreneurial management. The typical entrepreneurial laver culture management (ELCM) can be defined as a management by the floating aquaculturing method and mechanical processing system. Historical studies show that the ELCM could be operated only under the following condintions; \circled1 securing capital, labor and aquaculturing farm. \circled2 Leveling up of technology to combine these resources effectively. \circled3 Realizing its true value of products for good profits. In turning from household mangement to ELCM, there are some obstacles as follows ; \circled1 Uncertainty, which cannot maintein the merit of mass production because the object of laver culture is living in the sea. \circled2 Immaturity of management owing manly to the lower level of technology and scarcity of competent managers. \circled3 Social problems ; lack of aquaculturing farm, overpopulation in fishing villiage, side-job with agriculture etc. For these reasons, there has been household management with overlabor and underconsumption in fishing village. In order that ELCM can enter the stage of maturity, those problems should be solved. Because ef laver industrial inferiority, these can be solved by the support assistance of government. As the required conditions in ELCM are filled by the government policy, ELCM are increased recently in its numbers.
This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and their change of Pinus densiflora forests by climate change in Mt. Hallasan. The results showed that the areas of P. densiflora forests of Mt. Hallasan varied by region, with a total area of 1,324.3 ha, concentrated mostly in the region 1,000 m - 1,400 m above sea level. The temperate coniferous forest zone are distributed in the upper part of temperate forest zone composed of deciduous broad-leaved trees. Most of the P. densiflora forests in the lower parts were found not to be spreading because they are located close to the deciduous broad-leaved trees. However, the P. densiflora forests in the Sajebi and Pyeonggwe regions composed of the grasslands and shrub forests were found to be spreading. In addition, the altitude of the P. densiflora forests distribution increased by about 50 m and 90 m in the Sajebi and Pyeonggwe regions, respectively. The spread rate is expected to become faster than in the past due to the rate of climate change. The structure of the vegetation in Mt. Hallasan and the changes in the vegetation due to various factors need to be investigated from a long-term point of view.
In this study, we investigate the atmospheric environment changes in the aspect of optical remote sensing using surface observation data from 1971 to 2000 of Korea Meteorological Administration. Visibility, spatially averaged over Korean peninsula, is systematically reduced from about 28km to 18km during the last 30 years. It means that atmospheric conditions for the optical remote sensing over Korean peninsula are growing worse and worse due to the degradation of air quality. The 30-year average of cloud amount shows a strong seasonal variation, maximum(75%) in summer and minimum (35%) in autumn. Precipitation also shows a very similar variation pattern with cloud. The temperature and sea level pressure show a opposite seasonal change pattern, maximum(minimum in SLP) in summer and minimum(maximum in SLP) in winter, respectively. Relative humidiy(RH) is one of the variables mostly affected by urbanization or urban heat island. As a results, annual mean RH is decreased from 73% to 68% during last 30 years. When we take into account the favorable and unfavorable factors all together, summer and autumn are the worst and the best season for optical remote sensing in Korea.
Space-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations have been widely and successfully applied to acquire invaluable temporal and spatial information on wetlands, which are unique environments and regarded as important ecosystems. One of the best studied wetland area is Everglades, which is located in southern Florida, USA. As a World Heritage Site, the Everglades is the largest natural and subtropical wilderness in the United States. The Everglades wetlands have been threatened by anthropogenic activities such as urban expansion and agricultural development, as well as by natural processes, as sea level changes due to climate change. In order to conserve this unique wetland environment, various restoration plans have been implemented. In this review paper, we summarize the main studies using space-based SAR observations for monitoring the Everglades. The paper is composed of the following two sections: (1) review of backscattered amplitude analysis and observations, and (2) review of interferometric SAR (InSAR) analysis and applications. This study also provides an overview of a wetland InSAR technique and space-based SAR sensors. The goal of this review paper is to provide a comprehensive summary of space-based SAR monitoring of wetlands, using the Everglades wetlands as a case study.
The tides, tidal currents and tidal prisms at Inchon Harbor are studied with recent data. The tides at Inchon Harbor is of semi-diurnal type having a spring range of 798cm and a phase age of 2 days. The monthly mean sea level at Inchon has a maximum at August and a minimum at January with a annual range of about 40cm. the tidal currents at Inchon Outer Harbor are of semi-diurnal type same as tides and nearly reversing type. The flood and ebb currents set north and south with a velocity of about 90-175 cm/sec and 120-225 cm/sec at spring tide and begin 0.2 hours after L.W. and 0.7 hours after H. W., respectively. Non-tidal currents flow southward with 10-20 cm/sec at west side of the stream and northward with 15-20 cm/sec at east side of the stream at Inchon Outer Harbor. The flood volume through the Inchon Outer Harbor fluctuates fortnightly from 590 10$\^$6/㎥ spring tide to 260 $10^6/m^3$ at neap tide and ebb volume changes from 470 $10^6/m^3$ at spring tide to 200 $10^6/m^3$ at neap tide, respectively. The flow area along the channel to the Estuary of Yeomha is controlled by the tidal prism as expressed by $A=1.14{\times}10^{-4}P^{0.966}$

This experiment was conducted to know what does the cutting date have an effect on the chemical composition and nutritive yield of Miscanthus sinensis, in order to determine the optimum cutting date of the plant when it is utilized as roughage. Miscanthus sinensis growing natively in the summit of Sam Ak mountain(550m above sea level) was cut at 10 days intervals from 25 July to 15 October, 1988. Plant length and dry matter contents were generally increased with delayed cutting date. Crude protein contents of the plant cut on 5, 15, and 25 of September were 5.5, 5.2 and 5.1%, respectively. Cmde fiber contents was similar with cutting treatment and averaged 35.6%. Cmde protein yield was higher in September than in other cutting date. Yield of crude fiber were 8.3, 9.3 and 9.3t/ha on 5, 15 and 25 September, respectively. Ratio of Cmde protein yield to Crude fiber yield on 5 September tended to be higher than on 15 September and 25 September. These results suggest that the optimum cutting date of the Miscanthus sinensis for good quality forage seems early September.
