In order to figure out hydrodynamic and water quality changes after completion of dike construction of the Saemangeum, which behaves as a semi-enclosed estuarine lake, numerical simulations based on fine grid structure by using EFDC were intensively carried out. In this study some limitations of precedent study has been improved and gate operation were considered. Also 3 phases such as air-water-sediment interaction modeling was considered. It is clear that inner mixing of the Saemangeum is dominated by Mankyeong and Dongjin riverine discharges rather than the gate opening influence through the Lagrangian particle tracking simulations. Vertical DO structure after the dike completion shows steep gradient especially at Dongjin river estuary due to lessen of outer sea water exchange. Increasing SOD at stagnantly changed man-made reservoir might cause oxygen deficiency and accelerating degradation of water quality. According to TSI evaluation test representing eutrophication status, it shows high possibility of eutrophication along Mankyeong waterway in spite of dike completion, while the index is getting high after final closing along Dongjin waterway. Numerical tests with gate operations show significant differences in water quality. Thus it should be noted that proper gate operation plays a major role in preserving target water quality and management for inner development plan.

To examine the movement of the freshwater discharged artificially into the estuary during ebbing period in the Keum River dike we observed surface salinity variations in three stations along the estuary channel in May 1998 and July 1997 and surface temperature and salinity along the ferry-route between Kunsan and Changhang during eighteen days in July 1999. Based upon the typical features of observed salinity variation, we analyzed the excursion and decay processes of the discharged water. When freshwater is discharged, the low-salinity water forms strong salinity front over the entire estuary width, which basically moves forth and back by tidal modulation along the channel, producing the sudden change of surface salinity with the front passage. Salinity distribution along the channel, which is deduced from time variation of mean salinity over the estuary width, after one tidal period from gate operation suggests that diluted low-salinity water is trapped to the front and surface salinity increases gradually toward the upstream region. This frontal distribution of salinity is interpreted to be produced by the sudden gate operation supplying and stopping of freshwater within about two hours. Daily repeat of freshwater discharge produces separation (double front) or merge between decaying and new-generated fronts depending on dike-gate opening time, and the front decays with salinity increasing if the freshwater supply is stopped more than two days. In addition, the observed fluctuations and deviations in surface salinity variation is explained in terms of the differences of fronts intensity, their transition time and temporal salinity front running along the channel, which can be generated due to artificial gate-operation for the discharging time and water volume in the estuary dike.

This paper introduces the seismic facies classification and mapping of igneous bodies found in the sedimentary sequences of the Yellow Sea shelf area of Korea. In the research area, six extrusive and three intrusive types of igneous bodies were found in the Late Cretaceous, Eocene, Early Miocene, and Quaternary sedimentary sequences of the northeastern, southwestern and southeastern sags of the Gunsan Basin. Extrusive igneous bodies include the following six facies: (1) monogenetic volcano (E.mono) showing cone-shape external geometry with height less than 200 m, which may have originated from a single monogenetic eruption; (2) complex volcano (E.comp) marked by clustered monogenetic cones with height less than 500 m; (3) stratovolcano (E.strato) referring to internally stratified lofty volcanic edifices with height greater than 1 km and diameter more than 15 km; (4) fissure volcanics (E.fissure) marked by high-amplitude and discontinuous reflectors in association with normal faults that cut the acoustic basement; (5) maar-diatreme (E.maar) referring to gentle-sloped low-profile volcanic edifices with less than 2 km-wide vent-shape zones inside; and (6) hydrothermal vents (E.vent) marked by upright pipe-shape or funnel-shape structures disturbing sedimentary sequence with diameter less than 2 km. Intrusive igneous bodies include the following three facies: (1) dike and sill (I.dike/sill) showing variable horizontal, step-wise, or saucer-shaped intrusive geometries; (2) stock (I.stock) marked by pillar- or horn-shaped bodies with a kilometer-wide intrusion diameter; and (3) batholith and laccoliths (I.batho/lac) which refer to gigantic intrusive bodies that broadly deformed the overlying sedimentary sequence.
Basic~intermediate dike swarms are pervasively developed in the east of the Ulsan Fault, SE Korea. Most of them intruded initially along the NS-trending extensional fractures which developed under EW extension during the East Sea opening in the Early Miocene (before about 17 Ma). The mean-strikes of the basic dikes intruding into the granites are more clockwise rotated in farther eastern side, i. e.$ N06^{\circ}$E, $Nl5^{\circ}$E, and $N37^{\circ}$E in the western side, in the just vicinities, and in the eastern side of the YBonil Tectonic Line (YTL), respectively. And the mean-strike of the basic dikes nearby shoreline is also most clockwise rotated ($N75^{\circ}$E in the Guryongpo Peninsula). The spatial variance indicates that the dikes, located only in the east of the YTL, experienced horizontal-clockwise rotation, and that the dikes in farther east from the YTL experienced more clockwise rotation. It is, thus, supported that the NNW dextral shear stress, generated by the spreading of the East Sea, was propagated toward inland from eastern continental margin of the Korean Peninsula, and that the YTL is an westernmost limit of the clockwise crustal rotations which are pervasively observed in the vicinities of the Miocene basins, SE Korea.

We developed a time-lapse inversion using new cross-model constraints based on change ratio and resolution of model parameters. The cross-model constraint based on change ratio imposes the same penalty on the model parameters with equal change ratio. This constraint can emphasize the model parameters with significant change regardless of their increase or decrease. The resolution cross-model constraint imposes a small penalty on the model parameters with poor resolution, but a large penalty on the model parameters with good resolution. Thus, the model parameter with poor resolution can be effectively identified in the inversion result if they are significantly changed with time. Through the numerical tests for 3D resistivity monitoring data sets, the performance of these two cross-model constraints was confirmed. Finally, for the safety estimation of a sea dyke, we applied the developed time-lapse inversion to the 3D resistivity monitoring data that were acquired at a sea dike located in western coastal area of Korea. The result of time-lapse inversion suggested that there were no significant changes at the sea dike during the monitoring period.
To understand the variation and transport pattern of suspended matters, salinity, tidal current and suspended matters in semiclosed Muan Bay have been monitored during winter and summer. The suspended matters show considerably seasonal variations with low concentration and homogeneity in the water column during winter season, but with high concentration and layering during summer season. Particularly, during summer season, the freshwater and the suspended matters influxed by the gate operation of the Youngsan River sea-dike are transported northward in accordance with the would flow into the inner-bay by relaxed flood currents after the construction of sea-dike and sea-walls in the Mokpo coastal zone. But, in the south bay-mouth, those matters outflow through the bay-mouth, resulting from tidal ebb dominance and asymmetry in the west bay-mouth. The residual suspended matter flux is much higher in the south bay-mouth(-0.0955kg/m ${\cdot}$ sec) than that of west bay-mouth(0.0078kg1m ${\cdot}$ sec). Accordingly, The Muan Bay is interpreted as erosion-dominated environments, and the erosion somewhat progresses in the intertidal flat of the bay.
In this present study, to evaluate a behavior characteristics of the sea dyke coastal covering stone by sea waves. sea waves act on coastal structures as an impact load. During impact loading, erosion and bluff slumping occur in the coastal structures. Also, the covering stone are worn down by wave impact. The sea dyke has been used near coastal region for protection of infra-structure since 1970s in Korea. The sea dyke consist of dredged sand and covering stone mainly. The damage type of covering stone has been reported since 1970s. However, the interaction of impact load by sea wave with the covering stone has not been investigated yet properly. Mainly damage type of covering stone is an abrasion. But the study of covering stone abrasion is not sufficient. Hence, In this study, it was analyzed the interaction of impact load by sea wave and the covering stone during sea wave action on coastal structures. In order to analyze the behavior characteristics of coastal covering stone considering the magnitude and period of impact loading and to evaluate the displacement increment of covering stone during impact load, numerical analysis was carried out considering impact loading by sea wave.

As part of an on-going project investigating flux of materials in the Keum River Estuary, we have monitored seasonal variations of nutrients, suspended particulate matter (SPM), chlorophyll, and salinity since 1997. Meteorological data and freshwater discharge from the Keum River Dike were also used, Our goal was to answers for (1) what is the main factor for the seasonal fluctuation of nutrients in the Keum River Estuary? and (2) are there any differences in nutrient distributions before and after the Keum River Dike construction? Nitrate concentrations in the Keum River water were kept constant through the year. Whereas other nutrients varied with evident seasonality: high phosphate and ammonium concentrations during the dry season and enhanced silicate contents during the rainy season. SPM was found similar trend with silicate. During the rainy season, the freshwater discharged from the Keum River Dike seemed to dilute the phosphate and ammonium, but to elevate SPM concentration in the Keum Estuary. In addition, the corresponding variations of SPM contents in the estuarine water affected the seasonal fluctuations of nutrients in the Estuary. The most important source of the nutrients in the estuarine water is the fluvial water. Therefore, the distribution patterns of nutrients in the Estuary are conservative against salinity. Nitrate, nitrite and silicate are conservative through the year. The distribution of phosphate and ammonium on the other hand, display two distinct seasonal patterns: conservative behavior during the dry season and some additive processes during the rainy days. Mass destruction of freshwater phytoplankton in the riverine water is believed to be a major additive source of phosphate in the upper Estuary. Desorption processes of phosphate and ammonium from SPM and organic matter probably contribute extra source of addition. Benthic flux of phosphate and ammonium from the sediment into overlying estuarine water can not be excluded as another source. After the Keum River Dike construction, the concentrations of SPM decreased markedly and their role in controlling of nutrient concentrations in the Estuary has probably diminished. We found low salinity (5~15 psu) within 1 km away from the Dike during the dry season. Therefore we conclude that the only limited area of inner estuary function as a real estuary and the rest part rather be like a bay during the dry season. However, during the rainy season, the entire estuary as the mixing place of freshwater and seawater. Compared to the environmental conditions of the Estuary before the Dike construction, tidal current velocity and turbidity are decreased, but nutrient concentrations and chance of massive algal bloom such as red tide outbreak markedly increased.

Large scale projects of sea-land reclamation have been practiced mainly to enlarge farmland in Korea. Most projects produced estuarine reservoir with dike construction, which might result in water quality problems due to block of natural flowing of stream water to the sea. Applicability of a widely accepted watershed-based water quality assessment tool (BASINS) and its associated watershed model was evaluated on the Hwaong watershed in Korea. BASINS was found to be a convenient and powerful tool for assessment of watershed characteristics, and provided various tools to delineate the watershed into land segments and river reaches, reclassify land use, and parameterize for HSPF simulation. WASP5 is a general purpose modeling system for assessing the fate and transport of conventional and toxic pollutants in surface water bodies. This study involved selection and linkage of available models to be used as a tool in evaluating the effects of BMPs for control on reservoir water quality. Overall,.Linkage of BASINS/HSPF and WASP5 was applicable and found to be a powerful tool in pollutant loading estimation from the watershed and reservoir, and its use is recommended.
Humic substances are refractory organic compounds that are relatively low in biological activity but known to stimulate phytoplankton growth in estuarine and marine environments. The effect of humic substances on phytoplankton growth was investigated in the seawater zone of the Yeongsan River estuary where an episodic anthropogenic freshwater is discharged, affecting its water properties directly. Water samples and data of water properties were collected at three stations (Sts. A-C) along the channel of the seawater zone in February, May, August and November, 2009. The collected water samples were incubated after humic acids (HA) were added in mesocosm experiments. Phytoplankton (chlorophyll-a) were fractionated into net- (> 20 ㎛) and nano-size (< 20 ㎛) to examine the response of phytoplankton according to size. Their response to HA treatment was assessed by repeated measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA). The experiments showed that phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll-a) significantly increased after HA were added at the stations near the sea dike. Especially, nano-sized chlorophyll-a concentrations increased significantly throughout the seasons. This indicates that understanding the behavior of refractory organic matters such as humic substances is required to better manage altered estuarine ecosystems including the Yeongsan River estuary which are affected by episodic discharge of freshwater from sea dikes.
