  • The spawning characteristics of Hexagrammos agrammus and Hexagrammos otakii was directly observed in coastal regions of the Yellow Sea and South Sea during the spawning seasons using scuba diving. The territorial male H. agrammus showed different body size, nuptial coloration and nest location compared to those of H. otakii, even though both species caring egg masses were found at the almost same depths. In the West sea, a relatively small guardian H. agrammus male protects 1-2 egg masses laid on a clump of red algae within his territory. The territorial males in red nuptial coloration and their egg masses were well camouflaged in their surroundings. Contrary to H. agammus, a guardian H. otakii male in yellowish nuptial coloration protects 4-8 egg masses in a nest. In addition, their nests were located on the relatively open environments such as discarded fishing nets, rock crevices and a clump of algae. The results of present study shows that even though both of two species belonged to Hexagrammidae, they have different strategies for spawning and protecting their egg masses.

  • During scuba diving in Korea, accidents involving bodies being struck by the ship propeller when entering and exiting the water, repeatedly occur every year. In response to the need to reduce accidents and implement safety management measures, Korea has established regulations for the installation and management of propeller guards. However, owing to the absence of clear production regulations in domestic laws and regulations, the installation standards are ambiguous, and the inspection items are limited to the appearance and fixation status. As a result, the safety of divers in propeller accidents is not guaranteed. Therefore, this study was conducted to specify the current legal requirements for the installation and inspection of propeller guards. To achieve this goal, we conducted a thorough analysis of the current state of domestic and foreign propeller guards and the legal factors pertaining to safety standards. Based on this analysis, we identified specific areas for improvement and proposed a plan to enhance the system for installation and inspection. The installation standards for propeller guards were clearly outlined in terms of the lattice size and material. Additionally, inspection standards were proposed for appearance, fixation, and material condition, along with clear indicators for assessing them.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify when spawning occurs of Clupea pallasii in the coastal waters of Jinhae Bay and Yeongun-ri, Tongyeong, Korea from December to February using SCUBA observation which is known as spawning season. Eighteen surveys of SCUBA diving observations have performed at 3 stations of Jinhae Bay from December 2017 to January 2018 and 24 times of survey at Yeongun-ri, Tongyeong from December 2017 to February 2018. In Jinhae Bay, average 740,274 eggs/㎡ fertilized eggs were observed in Judo Island and average 671,718 eggs/㎡ were observed in Gusan-myeon. On December 30, 2017, about 388,444 eggs/㎡ fertilized eggs were observed in Yeongun-ri, Tongyeong but no eggs were founded in next surveys. The results in this study suggest that spawning season of C. pallasii in the coastal waters of Jinhae Bay and Tongyeong begins in late December at average 7.7℃ water temperature.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate on the safety knowledge level, and to identify the factors that affect the safety knowledge according to general characteristics of scuba divers. This research design was a descriptive study. Data of 179 scuba divers were collected from October 17, 2010 to June 17, 2011. Data were analyzed by SPSS PASW statistics 18.0 program. The mean score of safety knowledge related to diving was 2.07(${\pm}0.54$)(score range was 1~4). The highest score was safety knowledge to cope with the cold($2.42{\pm}0.64$점). The lowest score was safety knowledge for hyperexpansion of lungs. In the results of multivariate regression analysis after variable selection, Adjusted $R^2$ value was 0.567. The model fit was 56.7%. The factors that affect the safety knowledge were age(${\leqq}29$ years), equipment(all purchase, some lease), motivation(job), participation period(${\leqq}11$ months) and frequency(once a month)(p<.05, p<.001). It is necessary to develop and conduct the educational program for scuba divers safety at country level.

  • Micronesia is an island nation located north of Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean. A survey was executed on Kosrae, which is one of the four main islands of Micronesia, during January 23-30, 2011 and January 8-15, 2012. The echinoderms were collected at eight intertidal areas and at 12 SCUBA diving points at depths of 10-50 m in the subtidal zone. They were identified based on morphological characteristics. In total, 50 species from 276 individuals were identified: three crinoids, 11 asteroids, seven ophiuroids, 10 echinoids, and 19 holothuroids. Among them, two crinoids, five asteroids, three ophiuroids, four echinoids and two holothuroids were newly recorded from Kosrae.

  • Two sponges, Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) and Stryphnus sollasi n. sp., were collected from depth of 24-30 m at Jeju-do Island and Chuja-do Island by SCUBA diving from July 2003 to June 2010. The new species Stryphnus sollasi n. sp is similar with Stryphnus niger Sollas, 1886 in the composition of spicules, however they differ in colour and spicule size. This new species has smaller oxeas and larger oxyasters than those of S. niger. This new species has two size categories of oxyaster but S. niger has one size category of oxyaster. The colour of S. sollasi n. sp is white, but the latter puce black. Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) is first recorded in Korean fauna.

  • Community structures and species composition in benthic crustacean around Oryukdo of Busan was investigated using a SCUBA diving in 2011. A total 115 species, 51 families, and 4 taxa were collected during the sampling periods. Species were included 52 species in amphipoda, 49 in decapoda, 8 in isopoda and 6 in thoracica. On cluster analysis, the benthic crustacea community was classified into three groups based on the species composition: group A occurred in spring, group B in autumn and winter and group C in summer. Species composition in benthic crustacean corresponded with the water temperature.

  • Two scleractinian species are newly recorded in Korea: Leptoseris mycetoseroides Wells, 1954 and Phyllangia hayamaensis (Eguchi, 1968). The two genera Leptoseris Milne Edwards and Haime, 1849 and Phyllangia Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848 are also newly recorded in Korea. The specimens were collected from the subtidal zones of Jeju-do Island, Korea by SCUBA diving from 1991 to 2007. Leptoseris mycetoseroides is characterized by its platelike growth form, intratentacular budding, irregularly developed collines, single styliform columella, and even septa and septocostae. Phyllangia hayamaensis is distinguished by its encrusting and plocoid growth form of corallites basally united with common coenosteum, trabecular columella, and irregular septal arrangements and paliform lobes.

  • Some sea urchins were collected from the subtidal rocky bottom of Munseom near Seogwipo, Jejudo Island by SCUBA diving from April to May, 2008 and identified on the basis of their morphological characteristics. Among them, Tripneustes gratilla (Linnaeus, 1758) of Family Toxopneustidae was newly recorded from Korea and redescribed on the specimen collected at a depth of 25 m between Munseom and Sekkiseom. The detailed morphological description was presented with the photographs. This species was characterized by the very naked median areas of ambulacral and interambulacral portions and this genus was the first record in Korea. Eighteen echinoids are so far recorded in Jejudo Island, Korea.
