From the investigation perfomed by this writer in 1986, it was recognized that many science teachers are in difficulty in teaching the intergrated science in secondary schools and then the present teacher preparation programs need improvement to advance the quality of science teachers. To set up the improvement model, the preservice programs in the departments of science education in Korea were intensively analyzed and compared with that in the department of science education in Hiroshima university. The results of analysises on the programs showed the needs for improvement. A improvement model of the program for secondary science teacher preparation was set up as follows; 1. The improvement program is set up to emphasize the basic science course such as, general physics, chemistry, etc. 2. More emphasis is put upon the intergrated science course. 3. The improvement program is a practical one which is suitable to apply directly as a program in the department of science education.
Science teachers' perception on their preparation program can help in conceptualizing how science teachers could be prepared. Based on this premise, this study aims to investigate preservice and inservice science teachers' perception on their teacher preparation programs with a focus on the coherence and balance of program. For this purpose, 20 preservice and 39 inservice science teachers were participated. Selection form and open-ended form questionnaires were developed to survey science teachers' perception on their program. The results of study are as follows: Firstly, participating preservice and inservice science teachers perceived the coherence of their program as moderate. The most and least coherent category of program was 'planning & preparation' and 'professional responsibilities' respectively. Inservice teachers perceived the program less coherent than preservice teachers in all four categories. Secondly, participating preservice and inservice science teachers perceived that practical elements were deficient compare to theoretical elements in light of balance of the program. Lastly, participating preservice and inservice science teachers perceived that current science teacher preparation program was biased to test-driven curriculum, and four domains of the program (subject matter knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, general pedagogical knowledge, and teaching practicum) need to be more strongly connected to secondary school context. Alternative ways to be more coherent and balanced science teacher preparation program were also discussed based on the research.

The purpose of this study is to propose a direction for the improvement of biology teacher education based on the status survey of the biology teacher preparation curriculum and its implementation. The following Improvements in the biolgy teacher training are suggested from this study 1. Biology education courses should be established as a major in the biology teacher preparation program. 2. Biology teacher educators with major in biology education should be employed in all the departments of biology education. 3. The manpower for biology education should be cultivated. 4. The research and development for biology education should be promoted and supported. 5. The biology educators at the biology teacher education program should implement its curriculum with correct and clear understanding of the program purposes in mind.

Teacher quality is a topic of international concern, as it impacts student learning and teacher preparation. This study compared the undergraduate secondary science teacher preparation programs from two universities in Korea with those of Oregon, USA. We examined the programs' structural curricular coherence, conceptual curricular coherence, and curricular balance. Structural curricular coherence was determined by examining the overarching goals of the institutions' programs, the organization of the programs of study in terms of meeting those goals, and outside bodies of evidence. All universities were in structural coherence for various reasons. Conceptual curricular coherence was determined by examining students' perceptions of the connection between their preparation and their clinical practice. In case of Korea, most students from both universities were not satisfied with their practical preparation. In the US, the students from both institutions felt well prepared to transition to inservice teaching. To determine curricular balance, we examined the institutions' preparation programs looking at the credit hours taken in the four main areas of the teacher knowledge base: GPK (General Pedagogical Knowledge), SMK (Subject Matter Knowledge), PCK (Pedagogical Content Knowledge), and CK (Contextual Knowledge). The total credit hours taken in each category was very similar by country but the application and field component in the USA was far greater than those of Korea where the focus was heavily on SMK and PCK. The main reason for these may be the nations' licensing and employment processes.

The assessment framework of any edcational program is used not only as evaluation criteria of the program but as a guideline for development and implementation of the program. The aims of this paper are to develop and apply thoretical backgrounds and practical plans for the preparation of assessment framework of science education subjects in science teacher education program. The backgrounds, basic direction and practical methods of the study are described in introduction, and the natune and structure of science teachers competency, which forms the foundation of assessment framework for science teacher education, are discussed in section II. Current status of science education program m. the science education departments of the Colleges of Education is outlined in section III, and precise description of development pIans fat the assessment framework is described in section IV. Finally conclution and suggestions are presented, follow by a model assessment framework and syllabus for science education subjects prepared by applying the theory and plans developed in this study.The model assessment syllabus modified by workshops of science teacher educatorts is shown in the appendix.

The purposes of this study are to investigate Korean science teachers' perception of the current science teacher preparation courses in Korea, especially focused on subjects of science education, and to induce implications for improvement of in-service program for science teachers. To do this, a questionnaire was developed by the authors and administered to the 215 science teachers sampled nationwide. The study concluded that science teachers perceived that the two compulsory subjects, 'science education theories' and 'science teaching-learning materials and teaching methods' were not enough for a professional science teacher. Particularly, they consisently insisted that more practices under the relationship with teaching science in schools were necessary when learning subjects of science education. Based on science teachers' response, we recommended that the following 4 subjects should be added in the course of pre-service program for science teachers: 'Development of experiment/demonstration devices', 'Teaching creativity and education for the gifted in science', 'Development of science teaching materials', and 'Science inquiry learning and teaching'.
The purpose of this study was to get an implication on teacher education program, by exploring the difficulties pre-service elementary teachers have with their science lessons. 37 pre-service teachers were requested to write an anecdote about their science lessons during their 4 week practicum. By analyzing these anecdotes, the difficulties were grouped into several categories by the researcher, and then reconfirmed by the pre-service teachers themselves. The result showed that there were far more difficulties with practical work (cases: 48), than with content knowledge teaching (cases: 17). Among practical work related difficulties, the most frequent cases were: 1) when they have unexpected result different from scientific theory (cases: 10), 2) when they teach process skill and usage of lab equipments (cases: 8), and 3) when they do not have enough preparation for practical work (cases: 7). Unlike the result of preceding research on secondary pre-service teachers, there was no affective aspect problems. These difficulties also can be divided into 'problems' and 'dilemmas'. Whereas 'problems' can be settled by removing obstacles, 'dilemmas', a conflict-filled situation, require choices between competing values or aims. The use of scientific language, the decision on the level and amount of knowledge they teach, and disposal of unexpected experiment results caused such dilemmas in science lessons. The research results imply practical work should be more strengthened in the elementary teacher education program. And both teacher educators and pre-service teachers need to understand that practical teaching is a complex enterprise accompanying some 'dilemmas'. The role of science teachers as managers of dilemmas could be considered.

The purpose of this study is to investigate beginner and experienced Korean science teachers' perceptions about the science teacher preparation courses from which they graduated, and to compare them. The study was conducted as a qualitative study using in-depth interviews. For the study, interview questions were developed by the authors based on the questionnaire of 'The IMPPACT project' that was being conducted in America. The interview tool includes questions about their experience of science subject matter content knowledge, science pedagogical content knowledge, and general pedagogical content knowledge in their preparation courses. For the interview, seven beginning science teachers, less than five years of teaching experience, and five experienced science teachers, more than five years of teaching experience, were sampled from secondary schools in Korea. The research results are as follows: First, most of the beginner and experienced science teachers perceived that the teaching methods in the classes of science subject matter were not good model for teaching science in their secondary school, because they were not diverse enough and entailed mostly knowledge transfer just through lecture without teacher-student interaction. Second, most of the beginner science teachers perceived that they were affected positively by the teaching strategies and evaluation methods in the classes for science pedagogical subject matter and they could apply those strategies and methods in their current science teaching. Lastly, most of the beginner and experienced science teachers perceived that general pedagogical subject matter is important and prerequisite for science teaching in their schools, but the courses that they experienced at their university were not appropriate for their current teaching.

This study has been undertaken in the light of constructivist view of teacher education. Participant observation, unstructured interview and questionnaire were used to explore the process and the role of practicum in science teacher education. The subjects were 19 student teachers majoring in physics education; 8 had participated at boys junior high school, 11 at senior high school. The student teachers had very critical and negative perception on their school days' science lessons. They had expected to do 'better' in their practicum but there were only 3 to 5 opportunities of teaching under the umbrella of textbook. Explanation in the classroom and solving exercise problem were the main features of student teachers' lessons. Much of the lessons were similar when it is to same topic and the main reference for their lesson preparation was the textbook. The student teachers felt the design of teaching approach as the most difficult thing during their lesson preparation. They realized that teaching is harder than they thought and they should consider students' level and responses. Though they had become to have more positive perception on teaching job through their field experiences, their decision on job preference did not change. More than half did not want to be a teacher. The student teachers recognised the courses related with science education as the most useful to their teaching in practice among the program of college of education which they had taken. The experience of writing one lesson plan or teaching in front of their peers, designing a new demonstration equipment were recognised as valuable and helpful element of the courses. They proposed to reduce the amount of general education courses and to emphasize the courses relevant with science education and practicum. The limited opportunity of teaching in practicum was pointed out as problematic. Though the practicum was recognized as a 'good' experience to student teachers, it was confined by textbook and limited teaching opportunity. In conclusion, the practicum was not organized and implemented as a meaningful experience of science teaching and learning. There should be more structured studies on what kind of perceptions and experiences the student teachers had brought to the science teacher education program, how they interact with the elements of the program and how they affect to their science teaching. The structure and content of practicum also should be studied and developed so as to make practicum as a meaningful experience of science teaching and learning.
The purpose of this study was to explore factors that physical education graduate students in graduate school of education drop out of teacher appointment examination of secondary school by using Ecological Model. The in-depth interview was conducted for 10 physical education graduate students studying in school of education. As an aspect of the intrapersonal component, the effort to apply how participants'current job positively affects their preparation for teacher appointment examination is required and they need to clearly decide academic priorities to prepare for teacher appointment examination. As an aspect of interpersonal component, participants are negatively affected by subjective norm, thereby providing personalized mentoring program is required. As an aspect of organizational component, limited tuition support and inappropriate place to study are emphasized, so practical helps like sports practice instructor or teacher appointment examination preparation class is required. Finally, this study suggests the introduction of integrated system for teacher appointment examination.
