The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of accreditation on curriculum in Korean engineering education. To analyze the curriculum, bulletins of three colleges accredited programs and three colleges non-accredited programs from 2002 to 2010 were compared. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the accreditation for engineering education has a considerable influence on curriculum by strengthening the concentration areas, setting general education directions to fit engineering needs, and reinforcing major and MSC(math, science and computer) subjects. Secondly, the accreditation for engineering education causes significant changes in the educational objectives and contents. Lastly, it has an indirect influence on the curricula of non-accredited programs, such as increasing the number of MSC credits and accepting engineering design courses. Thus, the process of curriculum improvement is revealed in more global standardized engineering curricula.
This study aims to consider interrelations and reasonability to inquiry elements of environment units in 10th Science textbooks of 7th curriculum on the basis of their inquiry contexts, processes and activities. Frequency of inquiry contexts is 59.9% of the highest value in natural environment context but is 4.0% of the lowest one in techno-industrial context. Measurements, inferences, predictions, experiments, data-interpretations, correlations, conclusionreveals in inquiries are in all the textbooks, but observations and classifications, hypothesis generations, controlling variables, experimental designs and generalizations are not in some textbooks. Discussions, experiments, investigations in inquiry activities are included in all the textbooks. However, inspections are not appeared in the all the books. Based on the above results, social and techno-industrial inquiry contexts in the varied scopes are necessary in the environment curricula with a unified direction. Inquiry processes with pro-environmental behaviors as a last goal might be given into the curricula, having tasks that could be understand unified inquiries. In addition, inspections with effectiveness might be thrown into the scene of education.

In this study, nations with high academic achievement but disparate affective achievement in science according to the results of the TIMSS 2007 were selected and students' responses in the main survey for affective properties from those nations were analyzed. In addition, Korean science teachers' perception of affective achievement and the properties of teaching and learning science was explored by an online survey. According to the results of the analysis of students' responses in the main survey, the percentage of those with high levels of confidence in, pleasure in, and value perception of science was large for Hong Kong, Singapore, and England but small for Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. When the properties of teaching and learning in actual science classes were observed in Korea, actual classes focused little on experimentation, research activities, and the context of everyday life. According to the results of surveys conducted on science teachers, students' low confidence in science was due to difficult and uninteresting curricula and the absolute lack of time to study science and their low interest in the subject was due to difficult curricula and the view that science was unrelated to their future academic or professional careers. In addition, according to the teachers, students' low value perception of science curricula was due to the fact that there was no need to excel in science for academic or professional careers and the idea that the subject was of no help to daily life.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how much the programs of astronomy museums reflect the contents and objectives of current science curriculums. To attain the aim, comparison and analysis on the museum programs and science curriclum have been made. Five domestic astronomy museums have been selected. The contents and forms of their programs have been studied and appreciated by assessment instruments for astronomy museum programs. The assessment instruments were devised in consideration of both the science curriculums of the Ministry of Education(1997) and the achievement and evaluation criteria of the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation. The findings of this study are summarized as follows: The astronomy museums reflect most of the learning elements of science curricula concerning astronomy. These results indicate that the astronomy museum as an informal education institute is comparatively well connected to science education. The 5thgrade science curriculum reflected mostly on the museum programs, and too many of the astronomy museum programs were in forms of panel exhibition. Science curricula fared well but they failed to reflect the curricular objectives, which resulted in relatively low assessment scores. It is suggested that the findings of this study can be a foundation and act as guidance for selecting and developing astronomy museum programs which include the contents of the science curriculums more substantially.

An inquiry approach in teaching science has been advocated by many science educators for the past few decades, and most elementary and secondary science curricula have incorporated it in varying degrees. It has been proven in recent studies, however, that there exists considerable discrepancy between the expectation of outcomes of the inquiry approach and the actuality. This in part implies that there is a somewhat urgent need for the systematic evaluation of the approach in teaching science. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive instrument for evaluating inquiry teaching approaches embedded in science curricular materials. To develop a more valid and reliable instrument a set of empirical data was used in the developmental procedure, and most of the previous studies regarding inquiry teaching method and inquiry evaluation were consulted. The inquiry evaluation method developed in this study, called the Scientific Inquiry Evaluation Inventory (SIEI), is composed of three parts: (1) analyzing and coding each science process task of inquiry activity; (2) evaluating each inquiry activity as a whole; and (3) evaluating each science laboratory curriculum as a whole. The first part of the instrument consists of twenty science process categories and thirty subcategories grouped into four sections: (1) gathering and organizing data; (2) interpreting and analyzing data; (3) synthesizing results and evaluation; and (4) hypothesizing and designing an experiment. The science process categories are arranged according to the level of difficulty, psychological level of thinking, degree of creativity demand, and the model of the process of scientific inquiry, which is also developed in the study. The second part of the instrument contains four evaluation scales of inquiry activity: (1) competition/cooperation scale; (2) discussion scale; (3) openness scale; and (4) inquiry scope scale. And the last part consists of three methods for evaluating a science laboratory curriculum as a whole: (1) inquiry pyramid; (2) inquiry index; and (3) difficulty index. The instrument is designed to be used by teachers, science curriculum developers and science education evaluators for the purpose of diagnosing the nature and appropriateness of scientific inquiry introduced in secondary science curricular materials, especailly in laboratory work and field work.
In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the reading materials in the elementary school science textbooks in order to obtain implications for the effective use of them. The reading materials in the elementary school science textbooks developed under the 7th and the 2007 revised National Science Curricula were analyzed. The criteria for classifying the reading materials were the type of theme, purpose, students' activity, the type of presentation, the type of images, the role of images, and readability. The results indicated that the reading materials in the 2007 revised science textbooks are more systematic than those in the 7th science textbooks in terms of their length and their distribution among energy, matter, life, and earth areas. It was also found that various types of reading materials are presented in the 2007 revised science textbooks covering new themes such as frontier science, job opportunity and career, and environment. In addition, the reading materials in the 2007 revised science textbooks introduce more visual images and the readability of them are also better than their counterpart. However, several limitations were still found to exist in the reading materials of the 2007 revised textbooks; most of them are non-inquiry and explanatory; most of the visual images are illustration and/or pictures. Educational implications are discussed.

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to understand how the idea of data view and information graphics is used in the social studies high school textbooks. Data were collected through national curriculum documents and social studies middle school textbooks for the 10th grade students. We set up three questions for this study; what kinds of information graphics are used in the textbooks, how the graphics are organized in the social studies middle school, and how the 7th social studies curriculum is related with the 7th national mathematics curriculum. Through the data analysis, we found that 1) photographs, information tables, illustrations, etc., are used and frequencies of their usages are in descending order, 2) double lines graphs, and stripe graphs are often adopted for the comparison of populations, 3) the relation of the two subjects curricula is not well developed, especially in the curriculum steps of information maps, scatter diagrams, and comparison of populations. Finally we suggest that new web site of data view or information graphics be provided for two curricula, workshop of information graphics be needed for social studies teachers, and modification of the 7th probability and statistics curriculum.
This study was conducted to develop the PBL module using simulation(S-PBL), to apply it to the physical therapy curricula, and its effect on students; learning contents, learning process, and its overall impacts. The S-PBL module was apply on 47 students of first year physical therapy in Jeju Halla College for 8 weeks from 2005 Feb to April. The data was analyzed via SPSS 10.0; the evaluation of learning contents and process was divided into 5 areas; the learning impacts in 4 areas. The research sought average and standard deviations. The students; satisfaction regarding S-PBL learning contents and process averaged >3.5 (on the Likert Scale of 1 thru 5) which indicated high learning achievement. For the learning impact, using an S-PBL module, it averaged >2.8 (on the Likert Scale of 1 thru 4) which indicated high learning impact. Significantly, the students showed high satisfaction in the areas of clinical practicum, the learning process, the opportunity to participate in clinical affiliation, and motivation for acquiring professional knowledge. This study proved that the application of S-PBL is effective for the physical therapy students; ability to carry out physical therapy, and it is also worth to apply in the physical therapy curricula to improve the students; participation in clinical skills.
