Comparison of the Performance of MiSeq and HiSeq 2500 in a Microbiome Study

  • Next generation sequencing is commonly used to characterize the microbiome structure. MiSeq is commonly used to analyze the microbiome due to its relatively long read length. However, recently, Illumina introduced the 250x2 chip for HiSeq 2500. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of MiSeq and HiSeq in the context of oral microbiome samples. The MiSeq Reagent Kit V3 and the HiSeq Rapid SBS Kit V2 were used for MiSeq and HiSeq 2500 analyses, respectively. Total read count, read quality score, relative bacterial abundance, community diversity, and relative abundance correlation were analyzed. HiSeq produced significantly more read sequences and assigned taxa compared to MiSeq. Conversely, community diversity was similar in the context of MiSeq and HiSeq. However, depending on the relative abundance, the correlation between the two platforms differed. The correlation between HiSeq and MiSeq sequencing data for highly abundant taxa (> 2%), low abundant taxa (2-0.2%), and rare taxa (0.2% >) was 0.994, 0.860, and 0.416, respectively. Therefore, HiSeq 2500 may also be compatible for microbiome studies. Importantly, the HiSeq platform may allow a high-resolution massive parallel sequencing for the detection of rare taxa.

An Analysis of Consumer Education for Consumption Values in the Elementary School Textbooks (초등학교 소비자가치관교육 내용분석)

  • This study analyzes consumer education for consumption values in the elementary school textbooks to provide information useful in revising the curriculum in the future. The textbooks for the 4th, the 5th, and 6th curricula, which are 334 volumes in total, are analyzed by the context-analysis method. Context unit is used as the analysis unit and the number of pages is used as the system of enumeration. According to the analysis, the areas taught most frequently in current curriculum are \"frugality and reuse\" and \"the planned consumption\", while the areas taught least are \"impulsive and conformity consumption\" and \"the concept of consumer and the consumers role\". It was also found that current programs are not well organized in terms of continuity, sequence, and integration.

  • 유비쿼터스 환경에서 사용되는 수 않은 분산 애플리케이션들은 이벤트 기반 기법을 이용한 비동기 통신을 필요로 한다. OMG에서 정의된 비동기 메시지 처리를 위해 정의된 CORBA 이벤트 서비스는 유연성 있는 이벤트 채널을 통하여 분산 오브젝트 간의 비동기 통신을 지원한다. 기존의 이벤트 서비스에서 이벤트 서비스를 제공하기 위해서는 사용자나 개발자에 의해 수동적으로 채널이 생성되며, 생성된 채널을 통하여 이벤트 서비스를 제공한다. 그러나, 수동적인 채널관리 시스템은 분산 애플리케이션이 제공하는 다양한 이벤트 서비스를 제공하기에 기능적 오버헤드를 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 동적 채널 생성 삭제 그리고 컨텍스트 기반의 채널 관리 구조를 제시하며, 제안된 구조의 이벤트 서비스의 시뮬레이션 결과는 기존의 이벤트 서비스의 이벤트 처리 시간보다 더 나은 결과를 보여준다.

High Throughput Parallel Decoding Method for H.264/AVC CAVLC

  • A high throughput parallel decoding method is developed for context-based adaptive variable length codes. In this paper, several new design ideas are devised and implemented for scalable parallel processing, a reduction in area, and a reduction in power requirements. First, simplified logical operations instead of memory lookups are used for parallel processing. Second, the codes are grouped based on their lengths for efficient logical operation. Third, up to M bits of the input stream can be analyzed simultaneously. For comparison, we designed a logical-operation-based parallel decoder for M=8 and a conventional parallel decoder. High-speed parallel decoding becomes possible with our method. In addition, for similar decoding rates (1.57 codes/cycle for M=8), our new approach uses 46% less chip area than the conventional method.

Empathy In Informal Caregiving: Extension of A Concept from Professional Practice

  • The concept of empathy was examined In the professional caregiving relationship and its application was extended to the context of informal caregiving. Using the Lazarus and Folkman model, the influence of empathy on the caregiver's experience in the caregiving relationship was illustrated. The effects of the caregiver's empathy on his/her own caregiving outcomes were investigated by examining the relationship between empathy and burnout experience and life satisfaction. Empathy increased emotional exhaustion while increased personal accomplishment and personalization, indicating conflicting relationship between empathy and burnout. This conflict relationship between empathy and burnout can be explained by suggesting the distinct roles of two dimensions of empathy emotional and cognitive. The needs for more research to support the critical roles of empathy in informal caregiving context and to examine the definite roles of two dimensions of empathy were suggested.

  • Ubiquitous computing environment accelerates the advent of the IT Ecosystem. In the coming generation, a massive number of ubiquitous devices and services are converged into an ultra-large-scale system. In this context, high degrees of complexity and organization change the paradigm of knowledge and its management levels. The objective of this paper is to explore the Knowledge Management Systems in view of demands in ultra-large-scale systems. We introduce motivation for Next-Generation (NG) usage and their upcoming requirements. The possible applications will be discussed, and summary of different techniques are conducted. The tools and techniques that allow KMS to operate as "Vital Success Enabler" to achieve organizational benefits will be examined. Potential future directions for research are highlighted: these include advances in knowledge capture, storage / retrieval and sharing techniques, in particular with the surrounding role of information technology.

  • Ubiquitous interaction in a pervasive environment is the main attribute of smart spaces. Pervasive systems are weaving themselves in our daily life, making it possible to collect user information invisibly, in an unobtrusive manner by known and even unknown parties. Huge number of interactions between users and pervasive devices necessitate a comprehensive trust model which unifies different trust factors like context, recommendation, and history to calculate the trust level of each party precisely. Trusted computing enables effective solutions to verify the trustworthiness of computing platforms. In this paper, we elaborate Unified Trust Model (UTM) which calculates entity's trustworthiness based on history, recommendation, context and platform integrity measurement, and formally use these factors in trustworthiness calculation. We evaluate UTM behaviour by simulating in different scenario experiments using a Trust and Reputation Models Simulator for Wireless Sensor Networks. We show that UTM offers responsive behaviour and can be used effectively in the low interaction environments.

  • The paper discusses technology platforms as an instrument of science, technology and innovation policy in light of their use in industrial R&D. The authors assert that the technology platforms approach as a policy concept refects special organizational and institutional features learned from industrial technology platforms. The characteristics of industrial technology platforms are reviewed, and their impact on the organization of research, development and innovation activities in companies is explored. Second, the industrial technology platform is examined in the context of European Technology Platforms and the recent initiative for technology platforms in Russia. Finally, the technology platform concept implications for the STI policy context are discussed.

  • 유비쿼터스 시대를 향하여 나아가는 현대 사회에서 사람들을 위한 추천시스템은 필수 불가결한 요소 중의 하나이다. 추천 시스템 중에서 사용자의 성별, 나이, 직업 등의 인구 통계적 요소를 고려한 시스템이 주를 이루고 있지만 이러한 시스템에는 어느 정도의 한계가 있다. 추천에 있어서 사용자의 기분, 날씨, 온도 등 주변 환경의 상황이 반영되지 않고 있고 학습을 위한 데이터에 대한 신뢰도 또한 문제가 된다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 본 논문에서는 상황정보(Context Information)와 공간 데이터 마이닝(Spatial Data Mining) 기법을 이용한 향상된 추천 시스템을 제안한다. 제안하는 시스템에서는 보다 정확한 추천을 위해 첫째, 날씨, 온도, 사용자의 기분 등의 상황정보를 고려하였다. 그리고 사용자의 유사도 측정을 통해 학습 데이터의 신뢰도를 향상시켰으며, 셋째, 의사결정 트리(Decision Tree) 기법을 이용하여 추천의 정확도를 높였다. 실험을 통하여 측정한 결과 제안하는 추천시스템이 기존의 인구 통계적 요소만을 고려한 시스템이나 의사결정 트리만을 이용한 시스템보다 향상된 성능을 보였다.

Context-ID detection method for Robust Header Compression in wireless packet communication

  • Communication schemes are currently changing from circuit switched towards packet switched. These changes enable access to Internet and multimedia services in wireless network. Provision of real-time IP services in air interface introduces relatively large overhead in RTP/UDP/IP headers. To reduce the overhead, the header compression schemes are required. There exist two header compression schemes (CRTP, ROHC) which are IETF standards. We propose Context-ID detection method which reduces more efficiently the packet loss rate than two existing schemes. Its performance in WCDMA system environment is evaluated for CRTP and ROHC schemes.
