  • This study investigates the effect of in-law relationship on the marital adjustment of married couples by considering family-oriented Korean culture. Previous in-law studies did not consider the influence of another party who did not attend the survey due to sampling limitations. However, the marital adjustment of married couple and the satisfaction of the relationship with parents-in-law are two-way relationships that affect each other and are not one-sided relationships. By considering the non-independence of the couple's data, Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was utilized to examine the structural relationship between marital adjustment (marital satisfaction and marital stability) and in-law relationship quality (relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law for wives, relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and son-in-law for husbands) of 203 married couples. Results indicated that a high satisfaction of wives' in-law relationship increased personal marital adjustment as well as husbands' marital adjustment. The husbands' positive relationship with in-laws also increased personal marital adjustment and their wives' marital adjustment. The results of this study can be used as basic data for program development and counseling for healthy in-law relationship as well as educational data for couples intending to marry.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of physical activity on communication and adaptation to school life of elementary school students. Seventy-two students (male 37; female 35) from two classes participated in the experiment. One class served as an experimental group and the other as a control group. The program consists of 16 sessions. Participants completed the Communication Scale and School Adjustment Scale. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test and covariance analysis. The results of the analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences between elementary school students who participated in physical activity and ones who did not in terms of communication and school life adaptation. Based upon these results, it is concluded that physical activity is effective for communication and school life adaptation of elementary school students.

  • This study examined the relationships between learners' perception on parents academic involvement, academic self-efficacy, school adjustment, and career maturity, and also to analyze the hypothetical structural equation model relating three independent variables to career maturity. The participants were 443 sixth grade children(218 boys and 225 girls). The findings are as follows. career maturity positively showed the highest correlations with learners' perception on parent academic involvement, and academic self-efficacy. The findings revealed that learners' perception on parent academic involvement indirectly influenced career maturity mediated by academic self-efficacy and school adjustment. Furthermore, school adjustment displayed the highest direct effect on career maturity, whereas learners' perception on parent academic involvement showed the highest indirect effect on career maturity. It was discussed to develop and mange career program, career education, and career counseling effectively for elementary school children.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the mediation effect of school adjustment between perceived parental attitude and mental health in adolescents. 544 adolescents who live in Chungbuk filled out questionnaires. Data were analyzed by regression analysis with SPSS 18.0 version. Results showed significant relationships between socio-economic variables and main variables. Female showed higher depression and suicidal ideation than male. Higher performance group perceived parental attitude more positively, showed lower level of depression and suicidal ideation, and higher level of school adjustment than lower performance group. In addition, perceived parental attitude was a predictor of adolescent' mental health. School adjustment proved to have the mediating effect on depression and suicidal ideation overall. The specific interventions are associated with the increase of professionals and prevention program with parents, and the activation of school welfare.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem on the convergent relationship between respect for human rights and school adjustment of adolescents. Data came from the Korean Survey on the rights of Children and Youth in 2016 and a total of 2,366 of the 2nd grade students in middle school were employed. Structural equation modeling approach was utilized to test the goodness of research model fit and especially the mediating effect was tested by bootstrapping method. Results showed that goodness of model fit was acceptable and self-esteem mediated the convergent relationship between respect for human rights and school adjustment of adolescents. This indicates that the more experiences in respect for human rights and the higher their self-esteem students have, the better school adjustment they acquire. The results of the study imply that it is necessary to expand the human rights education for teachers and develop a new educational program that links between respect for human rights and self-esteem.

A positive correlation was found for college adjustment with ego-resilience, emotional intelligence, stress coping strategies. In addition emotional intelligence, ego-resilience, school record, satisfaction with nursing major, personal relations, gender accounted for 53.9% of variance in college adjustment. The strongest predictor of college adjustment was emotional intelligence. The findings suggest that development of emotional intelligence and ego-resilience in nursing students is important to college adjustment. • This study reviews the current status of Korean first graders, their experience with early care and education (ECE) programs, and their participation in private and after-school education. The research also examines how school adjustment during the first grade is related to family income, types of ECE programs, and participation in private and after-school education. Using the first year data of the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) 2010, this study analyzes 752 first graders who attended only one of two types of ECE programs (child care centers or kindergartens), after which two 25% income extremes were examined. The analysis demonstrates that children from low-income households attended child care centers more often, while children from high-income households attended kindergartens more often. For both low-income and high-income groups, child care centers had a lower starting age and longer attendance periods than did kindergartens. High-income household children started attending ECE programs earlier, experienced more private and after-school education, and received a larger number of private and after-school educational lessons. For the second research purpose, children from low-income families showed better peer relations in school adjustment, while children attending child care centers showed better teacher relations than children attending kindergartens. Children with after-school education also exhibited better peer relations. These findings show the importance of government support for early learning, especially for low-income families and offer a foundation for developing private education polices for early childhood before and after school entry.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of self-efficacy on adolescents' school adjustments and to identify mediating effects of depression and aggression. To this end, we conducted descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and path analysis, using data from the 2008 Korean Youth Panel Survey undertaken by the National Youth Policy Institute. Our analysis shows that self-efficacy has positive effects on adolescents' school adjustments, while both depression and aggression have negative effects on adolescents' school adjustments. Moreover, both depression and aggression have a mediating effect when it comes to self-efficacy and school adjustments. These results imply that schools should consider developing a service delivery system by providing students with professional services that enhance self-efficacy. Moreover, such services will be more effective when they are combined with a program that reduces students' depression and aggression.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of stress coping strategy on the relationship between academic burnout and school adjustment in Korea adolescents. A survey was conducted using a convenience sample drawn from 1,232 students from junior high schools in Kunggi Province. Data were analyzed using SPSS package program. The survey results showed that 44.6% of students are dissatisfied with their own academic grade. Antipathy and cynicism showed the most impact on academic burnout. In addition, academic burnout was negatively related with school adjustment. Especially academic burnout exerted inverse relationship with school adjustment, whereas problem oriented and seeking social support coping positively influence on school adjustment. Problem oriented and seeking social support coping partially mediated the relationship between academic burnout and school adjustment. The results indicate that improvement of active stress coping is important to prevent the symptoms of academic burnout and to increase the school adjustment.
