  • Supersonic jet issuing from a nozzle invariably cause high-frequency noises. These consist of three principal components ; the turbulent mixing noise, the broadband shock-associated noise, and the screech tone. In present study, it was experimentally investigated to the effect of nozzle lip thickness on the characteristics of supersonic jet noise. The convergent-divergent nozzle of a design Mach number 2.0 was used in experiment. With three different nozzle-lip thicknesses, the jet pressure ratio was varied in the range between 2.0 and 12.0. Acoustic measurements were conducted by microphones in an anechoic room, and the major structures of the supersonic jets were visualized by a Schlieren optical system to investigate the effect of nozzle lip thickness. The measured results show that the characteristics of supersonic jet noise, such as overall sound pressure level (OASPL) and screech frequency, strongly depend upon the thickness of nozzle-lip.

  • The influences of number of spark plug on ignitability, combustion characteristics and combustion promotion effect were examined to establish the design conception of spark ignition system for lean burn. Ignitability was increased remarkably by increasing of number of spark plug at combustion wall. Combustion duration was shortened and maximum combustion pressure was increased in accordance with increasing of spark plug number. Rate of overall combustion promotion considered of combustion duration and combustion pressure was 28% in two point ignition and 40% in four point ignition. It was verified that heat release, heat loss and combustion duration were affected by flame area, heat transfer area and maximum flame travel distance respectively.

  • Supersonic liquid jet discharged from a nozzle has been investigated by using a ballistic range which is composed of high-pressure tube, pump tube, launch tube and liquid storage nozzle. High-speed Schlieren optical method was used to visualize the supersonic liquid jet flow field containing shock wave system, and spray droplet diameter was measured by the laser diffraction method. Experiment was performed with various types of nozzle to investigate the major characteristics of the supersonic liquid jet operating at the range of total pressure of 0.8 from 2.14 GPa. The results obtained shows that shock wave considerably affects the detailed atomization process of the liquid jet and as the nozzle diameter decreases, the shock wave angle and the averaged SMD of spray droplet tends to decrease.

  • Propane-Air premixed combustible gas was ignited by the conventional current break system inside the open combustion chamber under the atmospheric pressure and the room temperature to measure the flame propagating speed and the burning speed, also to elucidate the history of the propagating flame behavior and wall effects to flame shape by using Ion Gap Method and High Speed Schlieren Photography. The results obtained show that the maximum flame propagating speed and maximum burning speed are approximately 292 cm/sec and 36 cm/sec at the mixture ratio 4.6%, respectively. The cellular flame structures can be observable in the rich mixture region, moreover, the cellular structures become finer, with increasing the mixture strength.

  • This paper describes the investigation of combustion characteristics of gasoline-methanol blend in constant volume combustion chamber. A constant volume combustion chamber was used to elucidate a basic combustion characteristics and the premixer was installed to control temperature and equivalence ratio. And the maximum pressure, combustion duration and flame propagation according to the evaporation rate were measured to determine the optimal temperature range for evaporating a blend fuel. These experimental results indicate that the combustion characteristics such as combustion chamber pressure and combustion were deteriorated by decreasing surrounding temperature of fuel. These experimental results indicate that the combustion characteristics such as combustion chamber pressure and combustion were deter orated by decreasing surrounding temperature of fuel injected. It was also found that the overall gasification process for methanol blend fuel was influenced by a combustion chamber temperature rather than a premixer temperature.

  • The effects of nozzle-lip thickness on the relationship between screech tone and broadband shock-associated noise were experimentally investigated using a convergent-divergent nozzle with a design Mach number of 2.0. Overall sound pressure levels (OASPL) and noise spectra were obtained at far-field locations. Schlieren optical system was used to visualize the flow-fields of supersonic jets. A baffle plate was installed at the exit of the nozzle and its size was varied to obtain different nozzle-lip thicknesses. Experiment was carried out over a wide range of nozzle pressure ratios from 2.0 and 18.0, which corresponds to over- and under-expanded conditions. The results obtained clearly show that the screech tones are influenced by the nozzle-lip thickness. It is found that the screech tone and its peak amplitude are strongly dependent on whether the jet is over-expanded and under-expanded at the nozzle exit.

  • This article describes a cellular instability and laminar burning velocity of simulated synthetic natural gas(SNG) including 3% hydrogen. In this study, experimental apparatus is employed using cylindrical bomb combustor, and investigation is carried out with high speed camera and Schlieren system. The cellular instability is caused by the buoyancy, hydrodynamic instability. Unstretched burning velocity can be determined by extrapolated stretch rate of zero point from measured results. These results were also compared with numerical calculation by Chemkin package with GRI 3.0, USC-II, WANG, C3 Fuel mechanism. As an experimental conditions, equivalence ratios was adjusted from 0.8 to 1.3. From results of this work, the one was found that the cellular instability has occurred by effect of thermal expansion rate and flame thickness. As the other results, unstretched laminar burning velocity was best coincided with GRI 3.0 mechanism.

  • The irreversibility of condensation process in the supersonic flow of steam turbine cascade causes the entropy to increase and the total pressure loss to be generated. In the present study, in order to investigate the moist air flow in two dimensional steam turbine cascade made as the configuration of the last stage tip section of the actual steam turbine moving blade, the static and total pressures along suction side of the blade are measured by pressure taps and Pitot tube. The flow field is visualized by a Schlieren system. The effects of stagnation temperature and the degree of supersaturation on energy loss and entropy change in the flow are clearly identified.

  • The SFRJ(Solid Fuel Ram-Jet) propulsion is attractive for projectiles because of the combination of high propulsive performance and low system complexity more than conventional projectiles. The Objective of this research was to characterize the inlet aerodynamic characteristics (center-body & pitot type) in SFRJ. Diffuser static pressure & combustion chamber pressure was tested and the AoA was changed $0^{\circ}$ and $4^{\circ}$ at Mach number of 3.0 for performance estimate. The performance study of inlet was carried out with the Schlieren system and Supersonic cold-flow system. Under mach 3.0, the center-body showed twice higher total pressure recovering ratio than the pitot type. A Computational fluid dynamic solution is applied internal flow of inlet and the solutions are compared with experimental results.

  • This study is to investigate the spray behavior of DME-LPG blended fuels in common rail injection system for diesel engines. The visualization experiment was performed to analyze the macroscopic spray behavior of test fuels. In addition, the experiment using BOS(Background Oriented Schlieren) method is performed to compare liquid phase and gas phase. The test fuels are injected in high pressure chamber. The ambient pressure of high pressure chamber was formed by nitrogen gas. Spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and spray area were measured using high speed camera. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) and spray particle velocity were measured using the PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system to analyze the microscopic properties of test fuels. The results of this experiment showed that spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and spray area of DME-LPG fuels are similar to those of DME fuel. When compared to results of experiment using BOS, significant differences of spray tip penetrations, spray cone angle and spray area are showed because of gas phase. The results of experiment using BOS method showed higher values. SMD of DME-LPG blended fuels is smaller than that of DME fuel. Velocity of DME-LPG blended fuels is faster than that of DME fuel.
