Developing the Cloud Detection Algorithm for COMS Meteorolgical Data Processing System

  • Cloud detection algorithm is being developed as primary one of the 16 baseline products of CMDPS (COMS Meteorological Data Processing System), which is under development for the real-time application of data will be observed from COMS Meteorological Imager. For cloud detection from satellite data, we studied two different algorithms. One is threshold technique based algorithm, which is traditionally used, and another is artificial neural network model. MPEF scene analysis algorithm is the basic idea of threshold cloud detection algorithm, and some modifications are conducted for COMS. For the neural network, we selected MLP with back-propagation algorithm. Prototype software of each algorithm was completed and evaluated by using the MTSAT-IR and GOES-9 data. Currently the software codes are standardized using Fortran90 language. For the preparation as an operational algorithm, we will setup the validation strategy and tune up the algorithm continuously. This paper shows the outline of the two cloud detection algorithms and preliminary test results of both algorithms.

A Novel Text Sample Selection Model for Scene Text Detection via Bootstrap Learning

  • Text detection has been a popular research topic in the field of computer vision. It is difficult for prevalent text detection algorithms to avoid the dependence on datasets. To overcome this problem, we proposed a novel unsupervised text detection algorithm inspired by bootstrap learning. Firstly, the text candidate in a novel form of superpixel is proposed to improve the text recall rate by image segmentation. Secondly, we propose a unique text sample selection model (TSSM) to extract text samples from the current image and eliminate database dependency. Specifically, to improve the precision of samples, we combine maximally stable extremal regions (MSERs) and the saliency map to generate sample reference maps with a double threshold scheme. Finally, a multiple kernel boosting method is developed to generate a strong text classifier by combining multiple single kernel SVMs based on the samples selected from TSSM. Experimental results on standard datasets demonstrate that our text detection method is robust to complex backgrounds and multilingual text and shows stable performance on different standard datasets.

Robust Sign Recognition System at Subway Stations Using Verification Knowledge

  • In this paper, we present a walking guidance system for the visually impaired for use at subway stations. This system, which is based on environmental knowledge, automatically detects and recognizes both exit numbers and arrow signs from natural outdoor scenes. The visually impaired can, therefore, utilize the system to find their own way (for example, using exit numbers and the directions provided) through a subway station. The proposed walking guidance system consists mainly of three stages: (a) sign detection using the MCT-based AdaBoost technique, (b) sign recognition using support vector machines and hidden Markov models, and (c) three verification techniques to discriminate between signs and non-signs. The experimental results indicate that our sign recognition system has a high performance with a detection rate of 98%, a recognition rate of 99.5%, and a false-positive error rate of 0.152.

  • Background subtraction is the first processing stage in video surveillance. It is a general term for a process which aims to separate foreground objects from a background. The goal is to construct and maintain a statistical representation of the scene that the camera sees. The output of background subtraction will be an input to a higher-level process. Background subtraction under dynamic environment in the video sequences is one such complex task. It is an important research topic in image analysis and computer vision domains. This work deals background modeling based on modified adaptive Gaussian mixture model (GMM) with three temporal differencing (TTD) method in dynamic environment. The results of background subtraction on several sequences in various testing environments show that the proposed method is efficient and robust for the dynamic environment and achieves good accuracy.

  • In this paper, a vision-based roadway detection algorithm for an automated vehicle control system, based on roadway sign information on roads, is proposed. First, in order to detect roadway signs, the color scene image is enhanced under hue-invariance. Fuzzy logic is employed to simplify the enhanced color image into a binary image and the binary image is morphologically filtered. Then, an effective algorithm of locating signs based on binary rank order transform (BROT) is utilized to extract signs from the image. This algorithm performs better than those previously presented. Finally, the inner shapes of roadway signs with curving roadway direction information are recognized by neural networks. Experimental results show that the new detection algorithm is simple and robust, and performs well on real sign detection. The results also show that the neural networks used can exactly recognize the inner shapes of signs even for very noisy shapes.

  • In this paper, the algorithms which can track the two dimensional moving circular object using simple vision system are described. In order to track the moving object, the process of finding the object feature points - such as centroid of the object, corner points, area - is indispensable. With the assumption of two-dimensional circular moving object, the centroid of the circular object is computed from three points on the object circumference. Different kinds of algorithms for computing three edge points - simple x directional detection method, stick method. T-shape method are suggested. Through the computer simulation and experiments, three algorithms are compared from the viewpoint of detection accuracy and computational time efficiency.

  • Bistatic spotlight synthetic aperture radar(BSSAR) with single track configuration uses the transmitter and the receiver which travel along the single track such as the leader-follower. For the BSSAR imaging, we modify the range migration algorithm. In time domain, we make the monostatic SAR using shifting of path, Then, in frequency domain, we compensate the separated distance between the scene center and the flight path using the principle of the stationary phase (PSP).

  • This paper presents the method for detection and tracking of multiple humans robustly in mobile platform. The perception of human is performed in real time through the processing of images acquired from a moving stereo vision system. We performed multi-cue integration such as human shape, skin color and depth information to detect and track each human in moving background scene. Human shape is measured by edge-based template matching on distance transformed image. Improving robustness for human detection, we apply the human face skin color in HSV color space.   • Automatic human face detection in a complex background is one of the difficult problems. In this paper, we propose an effective and robust automatic face detection approach that can locate the face region in natural scene images when the system is used as a pre-processor of a face recognition system . We use two natural and powerful visual cues, the skin color and the eyes. In the first step of the proposed system, the method based on the human skin color space by selecting flesh tone regions using normalized r-g space in color images. In the next step, we extract eye features by calculating moments and using geometrical face model. Experimental results demonstrate that the approach can efficiently detect human faces and satisfactory deal with the problems caused by bad lighting condition, skew face orientation.

Comparison of Two Methods for Stationary Incident Detection Based on Background Image

  • In general, background subtraction based methods are used to detect the moving objects in visual tracking applications. In this paper we employed background subtraction based scheme to detect the temporarily stationary objects. We proposed two schemes for stationary object detection and we compare those in terms of detection performance and computational complexity. In the first approach we used single background and in the second approach we used dual backgrounds, generated with different learning rates, in order to detect temporarily stopped object. Finally, we used normalized cross correlation (NCC) based image comparison to monitor and track the detected stationary object in a video scene. The proposed method is robust with partial occlusion, short time fully occlusion and illumination changes, as well as it can operate in real time.
