  • The resonances that contain the information on the properties of the scattering target can be used for target reconstruction approaches. The inverse scattering theory for the resonances has been applied to the problems of the scattering for a spherical, cylindrical dielectric objects and dielectrically coated conductors, shown reasonable results. Though by using this method the thickness and the dielectric constants of the target can be obtained from a determination of the spacing and of the widths of the scattering resonances, the radius of the target should be given. In this paper, we suggest the improved inverse theory combined with the resonance scattering theory to obtain the radius in addition to the dielectric constant of the target. The applications of this method for scattering problems of electromagnetic waves from cylindrical targets were accomplished, and it shows its validity.

  • In this paper, a radar scattering model for forest canopies has been developed based on an empirical rough surface scattering model and the radiative transfer theory. Leaves in the forest canopy are modeled by rectangular resistive sheets, brunches and trunks are modeled by cylinder, which sizes and orientations are randomly distributed. The scattering model has been verified with the measurement data of JPL/AirSAR system.

  • The effective elastic properties of materials containing spherical inclusions were calculated by the elastic wave scattering theory. In the formulation additional scattering fields by the presence of random multiple scatterers that affects the effective properties were found by the single scattering approximation. In calculating the scattering fields the ensemble average on the displacements and strains inside the scatterer was found from the static approximation at long wavelength limit. The displacements were assumed to be equal to the incident field, while the strains were calculated by Eshelby's equivalent inclusion principle on the single inclusion problem. Four different models were considered and they reflected different degrees of multiple scattering effects based on the approximation introduced in the process of embedding the inclusion in the matrix. The expressions for the effective elastic constants were given in each model, and their relations to the results obtained from other scattering theory and elasticity theory were discussed. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results on the epoxy matrix composites containing tungsten particles of different sizes and volume fractions

  • This paper describes a numerical analysis of the light scattering patterns of roughness profiles. This analysis was based upon the light scattering theory developed by Beckmann. In the analysis, the roughness profile was regarded as a profile whose irregularities depend on the production process and the shape of cutting tool. Generally, waviness of an actual surface seriously distorts the scattered pattern of roughness profile. In order to avoid the effects of waviness of actual surfaces, several theoretically calculated scattering patterns, instead of actual scattering patterns, were used to analyze the scattering patterns of typical engineering roughness profiles. The characteristics of the light scattering patterns for five model surfaces were studied.

  • A new method is presented for the isolation of resonances from scattered waves for elastic wave resonance scattering problems. The resonance scattering function consisting purely of resonance information is defined. Elastic wave resonance scattering from a water-filled cylindrical cavity imbedded in an aluminum matrix is numerically analyzed. The classical resonance scattering theory and the new method compute different magnitudes and phases of the resonances from each partial wave, and therefore. their total resonance spectra are quite different. The exact $\pi$ - radians phase shifts through the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies show that the proposed method properly extracts the vibrational resonance information of the scatterer compared to resonance scattering theory.

  • A general theory of scalar wave scattering by two separated particles is developed to give the coefficients of scattering and transmission in the form of recurrence formulae. Iterative applications of the formulae yield the coefficients in the form of power series of the coefficients obtained from single-particle scattering theories, and each term of the of power series can be interpreted as multiple scattering of the wave between the two particles in increasingly higher order.

  • A new method is proposed for the isolation of resonances from scattered waves for the isolaton of resonances from scattered waves for acoustic wave resonance scattering problems. The resonance scattering function consisting purely of resonance information is defined. Acoustic wave scattering from a variety of submerged bodies is numerically analyzed. The classical resonance scattering theory (RST) and the new method compute identical magnitudes of the resonances from each partial wave, however, the phases are significantly different. The exact $\pi$-radians phase shifts through the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies show that the proposed method properly extracts the vibrational resonance information of the scatterer. Due to the differences in phases of the resonances from each partial wave, the new method and RST generate different total resonance spectra.

  • Giusti-Suzor and Fano introduced translations of the scales of Lu-Fano plots by phase renormalization in order to decouple the intra- and inter-channel couplings in multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT). Their theory was further developed by others to deal with systems involving a larger number of channels. In different directions, MQDT was reformulated into forms with a one-to-one correspondence to those in Fano's configuration mixing theory of resonance for photofragmentation processes involving one closed and many open channels. In this study, the theory was further developed to fully reveal the coupling nature, decoupling of the background and resonance scattering in physical scattering matrices as well as to further extract the dynamic parameters undiscovered by Fano and his colleagues. This theory was applied to the photoabsorption spectrum of $H_2$ observed by Herzberg's group.

  • Light scattering phenomena are discussed for a nonpolar binary liquid mixture composed of an optically active solute and an optically nonactive solvent in the critical region, using the Fisher theory. Comparing them with those in the case that the Ornstein-Zernike theory is satisfied, the appropriate analytic results are obtained and discussed.
