  • A wideband instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) system is been proposed, designed and analyzed. Phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion is implemented based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, and the microwave frequency can be measured by detecting the change in output power. Theoretical analysis shows that the frequency measurement range can be extended to 4fb by adjusting the two sweeping signals of the phase modulators with a difference of 2fb. The IFM system is set up using VPI transmission maker software and the performances are simulated and analyzed. The simulation results show that the measurement range is 0.5-45.96 GHz with a maximum measurement error of less than 9.9 MHz. The proposed IFM system has a wider measurement range than the existing SBS-based IFM system.

  • This study examined the effect of the scattering dose on the thyroid during a mammography examination. One hundred subjects for a mammography examination were enrolled in this study. The average glandular dose (AGD) and thyroid scattering dose (TSD) were measured. Statistical analysis was carried out using the percentage, t-test and co-variance. The mean radiation exposure to the breast and thyroid was $1.08{\pm}0.16$ and $0.14{\pm}0.04$ mGy, respectively. The percentage TSD to the AGD was 31.19%. There was no difference between the Rt. and Lt., and CC to MLO, and radiation dose to the TSD was 13.78% of the breast. Therefore, the volume of radiation exposure to the thyroid was 54.12% in a single routine mammography examination. These results suggest that the TSD was increased by increasing radiation dose to the breast. A thyroid protector is considered necessary to decrease the level of radiation exposure.

  • $TiO_2$ hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) and their light scattering effect which influences on the photoelectric conversion efficiency of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) were investigated. When only HNPs were employed in DSSC as the anode layer material, the conversion efficiency (e.g., 0.96%) was the lowest, possibly due to scattering loss of incident light. However, DSSC fabricated by using HNPs as a scattering overlayer on the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (P-25), showed higher conversion efficiency (4.02%) than that without using HNPs (3.36%).

  • In this review, the sources and the characteristics of X-rays and electrons and their interactions with matters were described in terms of the atomic scattering factors. The geometrical diffraction conditions were taken into account in terms of Ewald spheres in reciprocal lattice spaces. The effects of the finite size of sources and detectors on diffractions were also considered.

  • We calculate the electron scattering amplitude with reduced angular momentum expansion(RAME) and compare it with the plane wave approximation. By using WKB approximation it is shown that the curvature correction factor given by RAME is originated from the source wave centrifugal potential energy. The factor also can be understood as an effective wave number correction factor in plane wave approximation. Angular momentum and its relationship with scattering amplitude is explicitly shown.

  • The electric field-induced modifications of magnetic anisotropy in CoFeB/MgO systems are studied using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering and magneto-optical Kerr effect. Voltage dependent changes of the magnetic anisotropy of -12.7 fJ/Vm and -8.32 fJ/Vm are observed for Ta/CoFeB/MgO and Hf/CoFeB/MgO systems, respectively. This implies that the interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is reduced (enhanced) when electron density is increased (decreased). X-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurements reveal that the small in-plane magnetic component of the remanent state of CoFeB/MgO systems with weak magnetic anisotropy changes depending on the applied voltage leading to modification of the magnetic anisotropy at the CoFeB/MgO interface.

  • Markov envelope as a theoretical solution of the parabolic wave equation with Markov approximation for the von Kármán type random medium is studied and approximated with the convolution of two probability density functions (pdf) of normal and gamma distributions considering the previous studies on the applications of Radiative Transfer Theory (RTT) and the analysis results of earthquake records. Through the approximation with gamma pdf, the constant shape parameter of 2 was determined regardless of the source distance ro. This finding means that the scattering process has the property of an inhomogeneous single-scattering Poisson process, unlike the previous studies, which resulted in a homogeneous multiple-scattering Poisson process. Approximated Markov envelope can be treated as the normalized mean square (MS) envelope for ground acceleration because of the flat source Fourier spectrum. Based on such characteristics, the path duration is estimated from the approximated MS envelope and compared to the empirical formula derived by Boore and Thompson. The results clearly show that the path duration increases proportionately to ro1/2-ro2, and the peak value of the RMS envelope is attenuated by exp (-0.0033ro), excluding the geometrical attenuation. The attenuation slope for ro≤100 km is quite similar to that of effective attenuation for shallow crustal earthquakes, and it may be difficult to distinguish the contribution of intrinsic attenuation from effective attenuation. Slowly varying dispersive delay, also called the medium effect, represented by regular pdf, governs the path duration for the source distance shorter than 100 km. Moreover, the diffraction term, also called the distance effect because of scattering, fully controls the path duration beyond the source distance of 300 km and has a steep gradient compared to the medium effect. Source distance 100-300 km is a transition range of the path duration governing effect from random medium to distance. This means that the scattering may not be the prime cause of peak attenuation and envelope broadening for the source distance of less than 200 km. Furthermore, it is also shown that normal distribution is appropriate for the probability distribution of phase difference, as asserted in the previous studies.

  • Tungsten (W) is recently gaining attention as a potential candidate to replace Cu in semiconductor metallization due to its expected improvement in material reliability and reduced resistivity size effect. In this study, the impact of electron scattering at grain boundaries in a polycrystalline W thin film was investigated. Two nominally 300 nm-thick films, a (110)-oriented single crystal film and a (110)-textured polycrystalline W film, were prepared onto (11-20) Al2O3 substrate and thermally oxidized Si substrate, respectively in identical fabrication conditions. The lateral grain size for the polycrystalline film was determined to be $119{\pm}7nm$ by TEM-based orientation mapping technique. The film thickness was chosen to significantly exceed the electron mean free path in W (16.1 and 77.7 nm at 293 and 4.2 K, respectively), which allows the impact of surface scattering on film resistivity to be negligible. Then, the difference in the resistivity of the two films can be attributed to grain boundary scattering. quantitative analyses were performed by employing the Mayadas-Shatzkes (MS) model, where the grain boundary reflection coefficient was determined to be $0.42{\pm}0.02$ and $0.40{\pm}0.02$ at 293 K and 4.2 K, respectively.

  • A numerical scattering model for artificial metal structure based on physical optics approximation is developed to identify the height of phase center, and the result is compared with interferometric SAR DEM. The interferometric SAR data were gathered by AIRSAR during PACRIM- II campaign on Jeju Island. Power transmission towers on piedmont pasture along the slopes of Mt. Halla look like elliptic risings in TOPSAR DEM. The heights of risings are quantitatively analyzed using a scattering model in the way of achieving the height of phase centers of power transmission towers. A numerical algorithm is developed on the basis of physical optics approximation. The structure of power transmission tower was decomposed into hundreds of rectangular metal plates, of which the scattering matrix is known in analytic form, and the calculated scattering fields were summed coherently. The effect of direct backscattering component, ground-scatterer component and scatterer-ground component are decomposed and computed individually for each rectangular metal plate. The $\Deltak-radar$ equivalent was used to calculate height of phase center of the scatterer. The heights of a selected power transmission tower and scattering algorithm results give existence and location of the transmission towers but not actual tower heights.

  • The evolution of silica aggregate particles in coflow diffusion flames has been studied experimentally using light scattering and thermophoretic sampling techniques. The measurements of scattering cross section from $90^{\circ}$ light scattering have been utilized to calculate the aggregate number density and volume fraction using with combination of measuring the particle size and morphology through the localized sampling and a TEM image analysis. Aggregate or particle number densities and volume fractions were calculated using Rayleigh-Debye-Gans and Mie theory for fractal aggregates and spherical particles, respectively. Of particular interests are the effects of flame temperature on the evolution of silica aggregate particles. As the flow rate of $H_2$ increases, the primary particle diameters of silica aggregates have been first decreased, but, further increase of $H_2$ flow rate causes the diameter of primary particles to increase and for sufficiently larger flow rates, the fractal aggregates finally become spherical particles. The variation of primary particle size along the upward jet centerline and the effect of burner configuration have also been studied.
