Many islands are scattered around the southern area of the Korean Peninsula and they may be very vulnerable to unexpected tsunami attacks. During the East Japan Tsunami Event occurred on March 11, 2011, many islands located at the southern area were affected by tsunamis. In this study, maximum run-up heights of solitary waves on a circular island with asymmetrical crest lengths investigated by using a numerical model based on the shallow-water theory. The obtained results could be used by local authorities to establish a defense plan against unexpected tsunami invasion.
This paper proposes a two-stage imaging approach for quantitative inspection of damages in metallic plates using the fundamental anti-symmetric mode of ($A_0$) Lamb wave. The proposed approach employs a number of transducers to transmit and receive $A_0$ Lamb wave pulses, and hence, to sequentially scan the plate structures before and after the presence of damage. The approach is applied to image the corrosion damages, which are simplified as a reduction of plate thickness in this study. In stage-one of the proposed approach a damage location image is reconstructed by analyzing the cross-correlation of the wavelet coefficient calculated from the excitation pulse and scattered wave signals for each transducer pairs to determine the damage location. In stage-two the Lamb wave diffraction tomography is then used to reconstruct a thickness reduction image for evaluating the size and depth of the damage. Finite element simulations are carried out to provide a comprehensive verification of the proposed imaging approach. A number of numerical case studies considering a circular transducer network with eight transducers are used to identify the damages with different locations, sizes and thicknesses. The results show that the proposed methodology is able to accurately identify the damage locations with inaccuracy of the order of few millimeters of a circular inspection area of $100mm^2$ and provide a reasonable estimation of the size and depth of the damages.

This paper presents an analytical investigation for a baseline-free imaging of a defect in plate-like structures using the time-reversal of Lamb waves. We first consider the flexural wave (A0 mode) propagation in a plate containing a defect, and reception and time reversal process of the output signal at the receiver. The received output signal is then composed of two parts: a directly propagated wave and a scattered wave from the defect. The time reversal of these waves recovers the original input signal, and produces two additional side bands that contain the time-of-flight information on the defect location. One of the side band signals is then extracted as a pure defect signal. A defect localization image is then constructed from a beamforming technique based on the time-frequency analysis of the side band signal for each transducer pair in a network of sensors. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme enables the accurate, baseline-free detection of a defect, so that experimental studies are needed to verify the proposed method and to be applied to real structure.
Putting emphasis on the effect of existence of porosity in the functionally graded materials (FGMs) on the dynamic responses of waves scattered in FG nanobeams resulted in implementation of a novel porosity-based homogenization method for FGMs and show its applicability in a wave propagation problem in the presence of axial pre-load for the first time. In the employed porosity-dependent method, the coupling between density and Young's moduli is included to consider for the effective moduli of the FG nanobeam by the means of a more reliable homogenization technique. The beam-type element will be modeled via the classical theory of beams, namely Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Also, the dynamic form of the principle of virtual work will be extended for such nanobeams to derive the motion equations. Applying the nonlocal constitutive equations of Eringen on the obtained motion equations will be resulted in derivation of the nanobeam's governing equations. Depicted results reveal that the dispersion responses of FG nanobeams will be decreased as the porosity volume fraction is increased which must be noticed by the designers of advanced nanosize devices who are interested in employment of wave dispersion approach in continuous systems for specific goals.
This study investigated propagation characteristics of piezo-activated guided waves in an aluminium rectangular-section tube for the purpose of damage identification. Changes in propagating velocity and amplitude of the first wave packet in acquired signals were observed in the frequency range from 50 to 250 kHz. The difference in guided wave propagation between rectangular- and circular-section tubes was examined using finite element simulation, demonstrating a great challenge in interpretation of guided wave signals in rectangular-section tubes. An active sensor network, consisting of nine PZT elements bonded on different surfaces of the tube, was configured to collect the wave signals scattered from through-thickness holes of different diameters. It was found that guided waves were capable of propagating across the sharp tube curvatures while retaining sensitivity to damage, even that not located on the surfaces where actuators/sensors were attached. Signal correlation between the intact and damaged structures was evaluated with the assistance of a concept of digital damage fingerprints (DDFs). The probability of the presence of damage on the unfolded tube surface was thus obtained, by which means the position of damage was identified with good accuracy.
From the reverberation signals received in the shallower water, the surface scattered signals are identified by using the multipath eigneray model that provides launch angles, grazing angles and transmission loss from the high frequency directional source to and from the rough surface. For small scale surface waves, the perturbation method is used to compute the backscattering strength for various grazing angles and wind speeds. A scheme to inversely estimate the wind speed, by which the observed surface reverberation levels are produced, has been tested. In result, for low grazing angles the perturbation method can be used to predict the backscattering stregth, thereby the surface wind can be indirectly estimated.
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is defined as the interaction phenomena of electromagnetic waves scattered from a large structure or complex terrain. In this study, the propagation of linear wave is modeled with ray theory, direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), and some classical theories on flat plates. The wave physics of reflection, refraction, and diffraction are simulated for the investigation of front and back scattering of the one-dimensional plane wave from a tower with ray theory and DSMC, respectively. The effect of rotating disk idealized from the real wind-turbine blades is modeled with a simplified version of the classical electromagnetic theory as well as DSMC based on the ray theory.
In order to know the characteristics of attenuation of coda wave in the Kyungsang Sedimetary Basin, quality faclity factor for coda wave (coda Q) is estimated from the earthquake data recorded in the KIGAM local seismic network. Thesingle scattering model for coda wave generation is adopted is adopted in estimating coda Q. In the present study, coda Q(Qc)is estimated in the range of $\alpha$=1.5~3.0, where $\alpha$ denotes the normalized time to S-wave travel time and expressed in terms of frequency (f). The deduced function in the range of 1 to 25 Hz is Qc=36.8283$f^{1.15095}$ which represents the strong dependence of coda Q on frequency. It is found that the difference of Qc between U-D, N-S, and E-W components is negligible. This fact suports the back scattering therory that coda wave originates from scattered waves by randomly distributed heterogenities in the crust On the other hand, it is observed that the coda Q increases with increasing epicentral distence. This observation suggests that QC increases with depth.

In the scattering of a monochromatic plane wave from a dielectric column oscillating sinusoidally prependicular to its axis, one could assume that the boundary moves with a uniform velocity equal to its instantaneous oscilaating velocity. The scattered fields are abtained according to the postulates of special relativitiy and extended for the osdillating period. The angle distribution of average scattering radiation, the average of total scattering cross sections and radar cross sections for a period are illustrated as the function of the relative maximum oscillating velocity and the incident angles of plane waves.
The nonuniformity of energy absorption capability of ZnO varistor is systematically discussed in this paper. The nonuniformity of electrical characteristics and microstructure leads to decrease the energy absorption capability of ZnO varistor. The energy absorption capabilities were measured under different current waves, the experimental results stated that they have highly scattered phenomena. The influences of varistor surface area and nonuniformity of electrical characteristics to the energy absorption capability and the nonuniformity of commercial ZnO varistors were analyzed. There is a high nonuniformity existing in the energy absorption capability of commercial ZnO varistors.
