  • Interests and importance of down-scale combustor is increasing with the emerging need for miniaturized power source which is now a bottleneck of micro system development. But in down scaled combustor increased heat loss compared to thermal energy generation inhibits the usability and application of the device, so as a preliminary work of down scaled combustor fabrication. Modeling tool for the device should be established, in this study modeling approach of closed vessel combustion phenomena that can express heat loss effect and resulting quenching is proposed and the result is compared with experiment data. From this model heat loss effect following combustor scale down can be further understood, and further more design parameter and analysis tool can be obtained.

  • As construction for road and train tunnel is increasing, various geotechnical conditions can be faced during the construction stage. Especially, if the tunnel is located in limestone area, the cavity is mostly to locate in tunnel planning location. One or some cavities which can be harmful for tunnel safety are predicted. Hence, this study was fulfilled to confirm the influence between tunnel and cavity using laboratory scale down model test and numerical analysis. The scale down model test was carried out to confirm the failure load of the model ground about the interval length of cavity and tunnel and to analyze behaviour characteristics of the model ground on the cavity shape. From the model test result, the failure load decrease in accordance with decreasing of interval length between cavity and tunnel within 0.5D. The numerical analyses were carried out for verification about scale down model test. From the numerical analysis result, tunnel safety decreases in the case of the interval between cavity and tunnel within 0.5D.

  • To overcome many defects such as the high product cost, large energy consumption, and big space capacity in conventional mechanical machining, the miniaturization of machine tool and micro factory systems has been envisioned recently. The object of this paper is to research the effect of dynamic characteristic parameters in bolted-joint beams, which is widely applied to the joining of mechanical structures in order to identify structural system characteristics and to predict dynamic behavior according to scale-down from macro to micro system as the development of micro/meso-scale machine tool and micro factories. Modal parameters such as the natural frequency, damping ratio, and mode shape from modal testing and dynamic characteristics from finite element analysis are extracted with all 12 test beam models by materials, by size, and by joining condition, and then the results obtained by both methods are compared.

  • This paper describes the scale effect of hybrid rocket motor which has blow-down oxidizer supply system. ResuIts show that the scale effect on regression rate is negligible using presently accessible scaling relation for $LN_2O$/PE propellant combination amid the absence of exactly proven scaling relation. It was also found that the characteristic velocity efficiency increases as motor scale increases. However, the characteristic velocity efficiency includes complicated parameters such as post-chamber configuration or geometry which can affect the entire flow field. It is therefore hard to conclude that the increase of efficiency is solely due to the enlargement of motor scale nor draw any conclusion on the scale effect which require a profound understanding of hybrid rocket scaling rules.

  • This study is to analyze the situation of residential area in Down Town and to research any factor of difficulty in developing residential area. First, we can summarize briefly in consequence of analyzing the residential environment classified with apartment and independent house in Down Town. 1) The apartment houses located in Down Town were constructed long ago on a small scale. The field investigation shows that parking lots are not enough and there are many spaces used inappropriately. 2) Each detached house was too old and built in narrow spaces. The irregular narrow lanes between houses also cause problems in walking and parking. And empty houses are found in that area. Second, the brief results of analyzing difficulties in developing the residential area in Down Town are as follows. 1) The land and buildings have difficulty in reconstruction because of the deterioration. 2) The economical efficiency is low though it is developed as a residential area. 3) There are some factors that they don't like to live in Down Town. 4) The law system is not enough to support the development of the residential area in Down Town

  • The characteristics of the nonvolatile MONOS memory devices as the nitride thickness is scaled down while maintaining constant tunneling oxide thickness and blocking oxide thickness have been investigated in order to obtain the 5V-programmable E$^2$PROM. We have found that 1V memory window for a 5V programming voltage and 10 year data retention can be achieved in the scaled MONOS memory devices with a 50 blocking oxide, a 57 nitride and a 19 tunneling oxide.

  • This paper investigates the social and political construction of geographical scale in conjunction with Korean housing politics. Recently, attention has been drawn to the issue of the social and political construction of geographical scale. Spatial scales have increasingly been regarded as socially constructed and politically contested rather than ontologically pregiven or fixed. The scale literature has paid attention to how different spatial scales can be used or articulated in social movements, with an emphasis on 'up-scaling' and 'scales of activism' rather than 'down-scaling' and 'scales of regulation.' Furthermore, the scale literature has focused on the aspect of empowerment. However, it is worthwhile to examine how scale-especially 'down-scaling' and 'scales of regulation'-can be used not only for marginalizing or excluding unprivileged social groups, but also for controlling the (re)production of space, including housing space. Under a regulatory regime, the Korean central government gained more control over the (re)production of housing space at geographical multi-scales by means of 'jumping scales,' specifically 'down-scaling.' The Korean central government has increasingly obtained the capacity to 'jump scales' by using not only multiscalar strategies for housing developments, but also taking advantage of various scales of institutional networking among the central and local governments, quasi-governmental institutions, and Chaebols, across the state. Traditionally, scale has been regarded as an analytical spatial unit or category. However, scale can be seen as means of inclusion(and exclusion) and legitimation. Choosing institutions to include or exclude cannot be separated from the choices and range of spatial scale, and is closely connected to 'scale spatiality of politics.' Facilitating different forms of 'scales of regulation,' the Korean central government included Chaebols and upper- and middle-income groups for the legitimization of housing projects, but excluded local-scale grassroots organizations and unprivileged social groups as decision-makers.

  • In this paper, a geometric similarity law is introduced to the performance test of a large-sized silencer used in ship engine or plant system. A test of scale-down model enable to yield the cost and time saving in developing large-sized silencer considerably. Two types of silencer, resonator and expansion chamber, were analyzed by a theoretical method and an acoustical FEM(finite element method) in order to obtain geometric similarity variables. A method is proposed to estimate the transmission loss of prototype model using the test results of scale-down model. Two actual large-sized silencer, which consist of resonator and expansion chamber, were analysed by an acoustical FE analysis. Consequently, the proposed method predicts effectively the performance of prototype silencers using those of scale-down models.

  • Nano-imprint lithography(NIL) is a polymer embossing technique, capable of transferring nano-scale patterns onto a thin film of thermoplastics such as polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) using this parallel process. Feature size down 10 nm have been demonstrated. In NIL, the pattern is formed by displacing polymer material, which can be squeeze flow of a viscous liquid. Due to the size of the pattern, a thorough understood of the process through experiments may be very different. Therefore we nead to resort to numerical simulation on the embossing process. Generally, there are two ways of numerical simulation on nano-scale flow, namely top-down and bottom-up approach. Top-down approach is a way to simulate the flow assuming that polymer is a continuum. On the contrary, in the bottom-up approach, simulation is peformed using molecular dynamics(MD). However, as latter method is not feasible yet. we chose the top-down approach. For the numerical analysis, two dimensional moving grid was used since the moving grid can predict the flow front. Effects of surface tension as well as the slip at the boundary were also considered.
