  • In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision method for temporal and spatial scalability to reduce computational complexity of mode decision that used to be computationally one of the most intensive processes of the MPEG-4 AVC|H.264 SE(Scalable Extension) encoding. For temporal scalability, we propose an early skip method and MHM(mode history map) method. The early skip method confines macroblock modes of backward and forward frames within selected a few candidates. The MHM method utilizes stored information of frames inside a GOP of lower levels for the decision of MHM at higher level. For the spatial scalability, we propose the method that uses a candidate mode according to the MHM method and adds the BL_mode as candidates. The proposed scheme reduces the number of candidate modes to reduce computational complexity in mode decision. The proposed scheme reduces total encoding time by about 52% for temporal scalability and 47% for spatial scalability without significant loss of RD performance.

  • Integrated services networks should guarantee end-to-end delay bounds for real-time applications to provide high quality services. A real-time scheduler is installed on all the output ports to provide such guaranteed service. However, scheduling algorithms studied so far have problems with either network utilization or scalability. Here, network utilization indicates how many real-time sessions can be admitted. In this paper, we propose service curve allocation schemes that result in both high network utilization and scalability in a service curve algorithm. In service curve algorithm, an adopted service curve allocation scheme determines both network utilization and scalability. Contrary to the common belief, we have proved that only a part of a service curve is used to compute deadlines, not the entire curve. From this fact, we propose service curve allocation schemes that result in a constant time for computing deadlines. We through a simulation study that our proposed schemes can achieve better network utilizations than Generalized processor Sharing (GPS) algorithms including the multirate algorithm. To our knowledge, the service curve algorithm adopting our schemes can achieve the widest network utilization among existing scheduling algorithms that have the same scalability.

  • We propose a heuristic buffer management scheme that uses both positive and negative acknowledgments to provide scalability and reliability. Under our scheme, most receiver nodes only send negative acknowledgments to their repair nodes to request packet retransmissions while some representative nodes also send positive acknowledgments to indicate which packets can be discarded from the repair node's buffer. Our scheme provides scalability because it significantly reduces the number of feedbacks sent by the receiver nodes. In addition, it provides fast recovery of transmission errors since the packets requested from the receiver nodes are almost always available in their buffers. Our scheme also reduces the number of additional retransmissions from the original sender node or upstream repair nodes. These features satisfy the original goal of treebased protocols since most packet retransmissions are performed within a local group.

  • Presented is a Genetic Algorithm(GA) for dynamic partitioning an ATM LANE(LAN Emulation) network. LANE proves to be one of the best solutions to provide guaranteed Quality of Service(QoS) for mid-size campus or enterprise networks with a little modification of legacy LAN facilities. However, there are few researches on the efficient LANE network operations to deal with scalability issues arising from broadcast traffic delivery. To cope with this scalability issue, proposed is a decision model named LANE Partitioning Problem(LPP) which aims at partitioning the entire LANE network into multiple Emulated LANs(ELANs), each of which works as an independent virtual LAN.

  • In this paper, we propose a low bit-rate embedded video compression scheme with 3-D block partition coding in the wavelet domain. The proposed video compression scheme includes multi-level 3-dimensional dyadic wavelet decomposition, raster scanning within each subband, formation of block, 3-D partitioning of block, and adaptive arithmetic entropy coding. Although the proposed video compression scheme is quit simple, it produces bit-stream with good features, including SNR scalability from the embedded nature. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed video compression scheme is quit competitive to other good wavelet-based video coders in the literature.

  • Scalability of clustering algorithms is critical issues facing the data mining community. This is particularly true for computationally intense tasks such as data clustering. Random sampling of instances is one possible means of achieving scalability but a pervasive problem with this approach is how to deal with the noise that this introduces in the evaluation of the learning algorithm. This paper develops a new optimization based clustering approach using an algorithms specifically designed for noisy performance. Numerical results illustrate that with this algorithm substantial benefits can be achieved in terms of computational time without sacrificing solution quality.

  • In order to accommodate current accelerated growth in customers and traffic. Internet has faced the demand to scale its network dimension both in size and bandwidth, and new service provisioning. One way to solve this problem is to forward If packets based on ATM switching technology. This paper briefly explained technical tasks to apply this If switching technique in ATM networks for building Internet backbone, and presented the directions to approach these tasks. Those tasks are scalability, ATM VC setup and mapping between VC and IP packet flow, traffic management and traffic engineering, multicast, and finally ATM switch architecture to provide multiservice.
