  • Though sensible heat flux is one of heat flux components, it is generally considered that the importance is low compared with other components because of the small value. Actually sensible heat flux over the tropical ocean is extremely small, less than $100\;W/m^2$ .. However, it should be noted that sensible heat flux in boreal winter over the western boundary current regions is considerably large, about $100\;W/m^2$, and not neglected. In this study we carry out intercomparison of various global sensible heat flux data including not only satellite-derived data but also reanalysis data in order to clarify the characteristics of those data.

  • Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) is quickly being adopted by aviation safety authorities around the world as the standard for aircraft tracking. The technology provides the opportunity for live tracking of aircraft positions within range of an ADS-B receiver stations. Currently these receiver stations are bound by land and local infrastructural constraints. As such there is little to no coverage over oceans and poles, over which many commercial flights routinely travel. A low cost space based ADS-B receiving system is proposed as a constellation of small satellites. The possibility for a link between aircraft and satellite is dependent primarily on proximity. Calculating the likelihood of a link between two moving targets when considering with the non-periodic and non-uniform nature of actual aircraft flight-paths is non-trivial. This analysis of the link likelihood and the performance of the tracking ability of the satellite constellation has been carried out by a direct simulation of satellites and aircraft. Parameters defining the constellation (satellite numbers, orbit size and shape, orbit configuration) were varied between reasonable limits. The recent MH370 disappearance was simulated and potential tracking and coverage was analysed using an example constellation. The trend of more satellites at a higher altitude inclined at 60 degrees was found to be the optimal solution.

  • This paper presents an efficient synchronizer architecture using a common autocorrelator for Digital Video Broadcasting via Satellite, Second generation (DVB-S2). To achieve the required performance under the worst channel condition and to implement the efficient H/W resource utilization of functional synchronization blocks, we propose a new efficient common autocorrelator structure. The proposed architecture can decrease about 92% of multipliers and 81% of adders compared with the direct implementation. Moreover, the proposed architecture has been thoroughly verified in XilinxTM Virtex IV and R&STM SFU (Signaling and Formatting Unit) broad-cast test equipment.

  • The main objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of newly available high spatial resolution satellite images, in evaluating vegetation environment of the urban areas. In doing so, we have used satellite images from QuickBird and selected some areas of Fukuoka City, Kyushu Japan, as study area. The results of the study revealed that, high resolution images are more effective in close monitoring of the vegetation status and green plants should be planted in open spaces and roofs of urban areas to increase vegetation, which will in turn act as a remedy to reduce heat island phenomenon.

  • A fault tolerant satellite attitude control scheme with a modified iterative learning law is proposed for dealing with actuator faults. The actuator fault is modeled to reflect the degradation of actuation effectiveness, and the solar array-induced disturbance is considered as an external disturbance. To estimate the magnitudes of the actuator fault and the external disturbance, a modified iterative learning law using only the information associated with the state error is applied. Stability analysis is performed to obtain the gain matrices of the modified iterative learning law using the Lyapunov theorem. The proposed fault tolerant control scheme is applied to the rest-to-rest maneuver of a large satellite system, and numerical simulations are performed to verify the performance of the proposed scheme.

  • Kojima Lake in Okayama prefecture is a freshing reservoir constructed adjacent to the oldest reclaimed land in Japan. This lake has a serious water quality problem because two urban rivers are flowing into it. In the present study, unsupervised classification was performed at intervals of several years using Landsat MSS data in the past 15 years. After geometric correction of these data, MSS data corresponding geographically to the field observation data were extracted and subjected to the multivariate analysis. Water quality distribution in the lake was estimated using the regression equation obtained as a result. In addition, two - dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed and compared with the distribution obtained from the satellite images. Behavior of the reservoir flows is complicated and water quality distribution varies greatly with the flows. Here, I report the results of analysis on three factors, field observation, numerical simulation and satellite images.

  • TRiplet Ionospheric Observatory-CubeSat for Ion, Neutron, Electron & MAgnetic fields (TRIO-CINEMA) is a CubeSat with 3.14 kg in weight and 3-U ($10{\times}10{\times}30$ cm) in size, jointly developed by Kyung Hee University and UC Berkeley to measure magnetic fields of near Earth space and detect plasma particles. When a satellite is launched into orbit, it encounters ultra-high vacuum and extreme temperature. To verify the operation and survivability of the satellite in such an extreme space environment, experimental tests are conducted on the ground using thermal vacuum chamber. This paper describes the temperature control device and monitoring system suitable for CubeSat test environment using the thermal vacuum chamber of the School of Space Research, Kyung Hee University. To build the chamber, we use a general purpose thermal analysis program and NX 6.0 TMG program. We carry out thermal vacuum tests on the two flight models developed by Kyung Hee University based on the thermal model of the TRIO-CINEMA satellite. It is expected from this experiment that proper operation of the satellite in the space environment will be achieved.

  • The surface observation probability system (SOPS) of the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) has been developed based on the climatological distribution of cloud coverage and the expected passage of satellite orbit. While the optical camera loaded on KOMPSAT series has been operated with the purpose of observing earth's surface, it cannot see the surface when an obstacle (i.e., cloud) exists between them. In the present study, cloud information of International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project incorporates into high resolution grid of the KOMPSAT-3 orbit. The characteristics of the KOMPSAT SOPS are discussed.

  • In these days, there have been numerous researches on nano and micro satellites under the slogan of "Faster, Smaller, Better, Cheaper". Since optical structure occupies large portion of satellite volume, research on deployable optical structure gains great attention to reduce total volume of the satellite. In this paper, we establish the requirement of deployable optical structure based on specification of conventional optical structure and propose two candidate mechanisms which can satisfy the degree of deployment precision. Then, in order to evaluate the degree of deployment precision, we carry out kinematic analysis on de-space among tilt, de-space and de-center which influences optical characteristic of a satellite.

  • This paper analyzes the characteristics of abnormal broadcast GPS ephemeris by comparing distances between the receiver and the satellites. Effects of abnormal ephemeris on receiver's position estimate are closely related with range errors caused by variations of satellite positions. In more detail each range error depends on the satellite position error and the line of sight vector. Based on the fact, the ephemeris parameters are classified into three types depending on the size, the shape, and the shape of the satellite orbit to analyze the fault characteristics. The effects of satellite position errors caused by the three type s of parameters on the receiver's position estimate are analyze d in detail.
