Image fusion is a technical method to integrate the spatial details of the high-resolution panchromatic (HRP) image and the spectral information of low-resolution multispectral (LRM) images to produce high-resolution multispectral images. The most important point in image fusion is enhancing the spatial details of the HRP image and simultaneously maintaining the spectral information of the LRM images. This implies that the physical characteristics of a satellite sensor should be considered in the fusion process. Also, to fuse massive satellite images, the fusion method should have low computation costs. In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient satellite image fusion method. The proposed method uses the spectral response functions of a satellite sensor; thus, it rationally reflects the physical characteristics of the satellite sensor to the fused image. As a result, the proposed method provides high-quality fused images in terms of spectral and spatial evaluations. The experimental results of IKONOS images indicate that the proposed method outperforms the intensity-hue-saturation and wavelet-based methods.
Ever since high resolution satellites were launched, high-resolution satellite images have been utilized in many areas. This paper proposed methods of generating simulated satellite image using DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and digital image such as aerial photograph. There are two methods proposed in the paper: one is Direct-Indirect method and the other Indirect-Indirect, method. It is assumed that satellite attitude is not changing and perspective center is moving in the direction of flight while image is captured. The proposed methods were implemented with aerial photograph, DEM data, arbitrary orbit parameters and attitude parameters of high resolution satellite image under generation. Furthermore, for the stereo viewing, different orientation parameters and perspective center were tested for generating simulated satellite image. In addition, the quality and accuracy of the simulated satellite image generated by the proposed methods were analyzed.

The backup site operation of the Image Data Acquisition and Control System (IDACS) for Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is discussed in terms of the ground station configuration, image data processing, and the characteristics of backup activities for both the meteorological image data and the ocean image data. The well-performed backup operation of the COMS IDACS is also confirmed with the first three years normal operation results from April, 2011 to March, 2014. The operation results are analyzed through statistical approach to provide the achieved operational performance of the image data reception, preprocessing, and broadcast.
Due to its inherent feature of high-resolution satellite, there is strong need in some specific area to minimize the processing time required to get a standard image on hand from downlink signal acquisition. However, in general image processing system, it takes considerable time to get image data up to certain level from raw data acquisition because the huge amount of data is dealt sequentially as input data. This paper introduces the high-speed image processing system which generates the image data only for the area selected by user. To achieve the high speed performance, this system includes Quick Look Image display function with sampling, ROI selection function, Image Line Index function, and Distributed processing function. The developed RPS was applied to KOMPSAT-2 320Mbps downlink channel and its effectiveness was successfully demonstrated. This feature to provide the image product very quickly is expected to promote the application of high resolution satellite image.
This special issue introduces recent researches on KOMPSAT(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) image processing and applications. In this paper, the status of KOMPSAT development and national satellite image application policy are introduced and the implications of the papers presented in the special issue are discussed. Satellite image resources and application policy that can be utilized through continuous satellite development are considered to be systematically prepared. Therefore, if data processing and application technology development for various fields such as forest and urban change detection, image correction technology introduced in this paper are continuously carried out, it is expected that the competitiveness of national satellite image will be further strengthened.

This paper analyzed the JPEG compression performance of MTSAT-1R(Multi-functional Transport Satellite - 1 Replacement), which is offering the LRIT/HRIT(Low Rate Information Transmissio / High Rate Information Transmission) service now, in order to design the system regarding LRIT/HRIT of COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite). To do so, we analysed Lossy and Lossless JPEG compression performance regarding the MTSAT-1R LRIT/HRIT data for 10 days, and made comparison to the image characteristics, and understood the JPEG compression characteristics regarding JPEG compression of geostationary meteorological satellite. This result of compression performance analysis is expected to be a reference not only to the system design and realization of COMS LRIT/HRIT but also to those who develop other meteorological satellite receiving systems.

The geometry of satellite image captured by linear pushbroom scanner is different from that of frame camera image. Since the exterior orientation parameters for satellite image will vary scan line by scan line, the epipolar geometry of satellite image differs from that of frame camera image. As we know, 2D affine orientation for the epipolar image of linear pushbroom scanners system are well-established by using the collinearity equation (Testsu Ono, 1999). Also, another epipolar geometry of linear pushbroom scanner system is recently established by Habib(2002). He reported that the epipolar geometry of linear push broom satellite image is realized by parallel projection based on 2D affine models. Here, in this paper, we compared the Ono's method with Habib's method. In addition, we proposed a method that generates epipolar resampled images. For the experiment, IKONOS stereo images were used in generating epipolar images.

Practical use is increasing on the aerial ortho image recently, and much researches for geographic information system build that use high resolution satellite image cause this are progressing. Also many researches that use KOMPSAT-1 satellite image of resolution 6.6m are performing in these days, estimation for between aerial photo and satellite image is needed. In this treatise scanned image of aerial photo, using aerial photo resampling image of resolution equal with KOMPSAT-1 image using aerial photo, and KOMPSAT-1 satellite image use for experimental image making each orthoimage, classified feature for estimate. We evaluated to what level that an separation item could be able to estimate in each orthoimage. As result of estimation analysis, In the classified feature in aerial photo orthoimage with aerial photo resampling image orthoimage is about 61%, KOMPSAT-1 satellite image orthoimage is almost 41% could estimated. Through this investigation estimate, KOMPSAT-1 satellite sue to map updating, geographic information og non-approach area and environment inspect.

The escalating demands for high-resolution satellite imagery necessitate the dissemination of geospatial data with superior accuracy.Achieving precise positioning is imperative for mitigating geometric distortions inherent in high-resolution satellite imagery. However, maintaining sub-pixel level accuracy poses significant challenges within the current technological landscape. This research introduces an approach wherein upsampling is employed on both the satellite image and ground control points (GCPs) chip, facilitating the establishment of a high-resolution satellite image precision sensor orientation. The ensuing analysis entails a comprehensive comparison of matching performance. To evaluate the proposed methodology, the Compact Advanced Satellite 500-1 (CAS500-1), boasting a resolution of 0.5 m, serves as the high-resolution satellite image. Correspondingly, GCP chips with resolutions of 0.25 m and 0.5 m are utilized for the South Korean and North Korean regions, respectively. Results from the experiment reveal that concurrent upsampling of satellite imagery and GCP chips enhances matching performance by up to 50% in comparison to the original resolution. Furthermore, the position error only improved with 2x upsampling. However, with 3x upsampling, the position error tended to increase. This study affirms that meticulous upsampling of high-resolution satellite imagery and GCP chips can yield sub-pixel-level positioning accuracy, thereby advancing the state-of-the-art in the field.
