Assessment of Subsoil Compaction by Soil Texture on Field Scale

  • It is necessary to assess soil physical properties and crop growth treated by compaction to establish the soil management standard. This study evaluated the bulk density, strength and crop growth after subsoil compaction for sandy loam and loam on the field in Suwon, Korea. The treatments were compaction and deep tillage. Sandy loam and loam were classified to coarse soil and fine soil, respectively, depending on clay contents. In coarse soil, bulk density of compacted plot was 8~17% greater than control and deep tilled plot. The root growth was worse in compacted plot compared with control. In fine soil, plow pan was not observed in deep tilled plot with 5~19% smaller bulk density than compacted plot and control. Deep tillage improved the crop growth. The soil physical properties by compaction were dependent on clay content and crop growth limit depended on the traffic driving.

1g shaking table tests on residual soils in Malaysia through different model setups

  • Studies of soil dynamic properties in Malaysia are still very limited. This study aims to investigate the dynamic properties of two selected tropical residual soils (i.e., Sandy Clay and Sandy Silt) and a sand mining trail (Silty Sand) in Peninsular Malaysia using 1g shaking table test. The use of 1g shaking table test for soil dynamic testing is often constrained to large strain level and small confining pressure only. Three new experimental setups, namely large laminar shear box test (LLSBT), small chamber test with positive air pressure (SCT), and small sample test with suction (SSTS) are attempted with the aims of these experimental setups are capable of evaluating the dynamic properties of soils covering a wider range of shear strain and confining pressure. The details of each experimental setup are described explicitly in this paper. Experimental results show that the combined use of the LLSBT and SCT is capable of rendering soil dynamic properties covering a strain range of 0.017%-1.48% under confining pressures of 5-100 kPa. The studied tropical residual soils in Malaysia behaved neither as pure sand nor clay, but show a relatively good agreement with the dynamic properties of residual soils in Singapore. Effects of confining pressure and plasticity index on the studied tropical residual soils are found to be insignificant in this particular study.

IBA Treatment of Poplar Cuttings and Soil Composition Amendment for Improved Adaptability and Survival

  • Poplar trees from the Salicaceae family over the years have been utilized for various reasons which include prevention of deforestation as well as phytoremediation. This study aims to determine the optimal pre-treatment and soil conditions required for propagation of poplar cuttings for increased initial adaptability and survival rate. Five poplar clones (Hanan, 110, 107, DN-34, 52-225) were selected for IBA, soil composition treatments on propagation. IBA pre-treatment of cuttings were utilized 0, 10, and 100 mg l-1 concentrations. Soil compositions were amended with TKS-2+perlite 2:1 (v:v) and sandy clay loam mixed with artificial soil. According to the greenhouse results 10 mg l-1 of IBA showed a significant increase in plant height whereas 100 mg l-1 inhibited plant growth except in clone 110. Soil composition severely affected root growth and hence overall growth of the clones. Sandy clay loam soil had poor to stunted growth compared to TKS-2+perlite.

동결·융해 이력을 받은 점성토의 미시적 구조 변화 특성 (Micro-Structure Change Characteristics of Clay Suffered Freeze and Thaw Hysteresis)

  • There is the freezing method as one of the ground improvement methods for excavating an underground tunnel, and due to its improved reliability, recently construction cases of applying this method into sandy soil grounds as well as cohesive soil grounds of cities have been reported. But, applying the freezing method into cohesive soil grounds could bring concerns of the expansion of the whole ground and the settlements from thawing of ground. In this study, the deformation strength characteristics of cohesive soil which received freezing and thawing hysteresis were examined using the sample collected from the site of cohesive soil ground applied with the freezing method and its structural characteristics were analyzed using an electronic microscope. And, the test with cohesive soil reconstituted from cohesive soil which received freezing and thawing hysteresis was carried out and its result was analyzed comparatively. The result of this test showed that the structure of natural clay was significantly changed due to freezing and thawing hysteresis.

강제치환 거동특성에 관한 원심모형실험 (Centrifuge Model Experiments on Behaviour Characterisitc in Forced Replacement Method)

  • This thesis is results of centrifuge model experiments to investigate the behavior of replacement method in dredged and reclaimed ground. For experimental works, centrifuge model tests were carried out to investigate the behavior of replacement method in soft clay ground. Basic soil property tests were performed to find mechanical properties of clay soil sampled from the southern coast of Korea which was used for ground material in the centrifuge model tests. Reconstituted clay ground of model was prepared by applying preconsolidation pressure in 1g condition with specially built model container. Centrifuge model tests were carried out under the artificially accelerated gravitational level of 50g. Replacing material of leads having a certain degree of angularity was used and placed until the settlement of embankment of replacing material was reached to the equilibrium state. Vertical displacement of replacing material was monitored during tests. Depth and shape of replacement, especially the slope of penetrated replacing material and water contents of clay ground were measured after finishing tests. Model tests of investigating the stability of embankment after backfilling were also performed to simulate the behavior of the dike treated with replacement and backfilled with sandy material. As a result of centrifuge model test, the behavior of replacement, the mechanism of the replacing material being penetrated into clay ground and depth of replacement were evaluated.

토양 column을 이용한 토성 및 자갈함량별 농약 이동특성 (Mobility of pesticides in different soil textures and gravel contents under soil column)

  • 토성(미사질식양토, 태백; 사양토, 횡성; 양토, 춘천) 및 자갈 함량(0%, 20%, 40%, 60%)에 따라 7종 (carbendazim, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, dimethomorph, diniconazole, endosulfan)의 농약을 토양 컬럼에 처리한 후 증류수로 담수상태를 유지하며 수거한 용탈수와 용탈수 수거 후 채취한 토양 중 농약 잔류량을 파악하여 수계 및 토양으로의 농약 이동특성을 평가하였다. 토성 별 용탈수 중 농약은 수용해도가 가장 높은 carbofuran이 세 토양 모두에서 총 검출량의 87% 이상 초기 $2{\sim}4$ L 채취시료에서 검출되었으며, 토양중 carbendazim과 carbofuran을 제외한 5종의 농약 검출량은 미사질식양토 > 양토 > 사양토 순이었다. 컬럼의 상, 중 및 하단의 토양 중 농약 검출량은 carbofuran을 제외한 6종의 농약이 clay 함량이 유사한 미사질식양토 및 양토의 컬럼 상단에서 $50{\sim}92%$ 수준으로 검출되는 경향을 보여 수계로의 농약 이동성 및 토양잔류성은 각 농약의 수용해도와 토양 중 clay 함량에 의존하는 것으로 파악되었다. 자갈함량에 따른 농약의 잔류경향은 토성별 실험과 유사한 결과를 얻었으며, 이동특성 또한 큰 차이를 볼 수 없었으나 자갈함량이 증가할수록 용탈수의 이동 속도 증가와 함께 시간당 농약의 이동량도 증가하였다.

사질답(砂質畓)에서 객토원별(客土源別) 객토량(客土量)이 토양(土壤) 및 수도수량(水稻收量)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of Red Earth Addition on Soil Properties and Rice Yields)

  • 사질답(砂質畓)에서 우량객토원(優良客土源)인 식양토(埴壤土)와 약간 불량(不良)한 양토(壤土)를 각각(各各) 3수준(水準)으로 객토(客土)하고, 객토(客土) 수준별(水準別)로 표준시비(標準施肥) 및 화학성(化學性) 개량(改良)의 시비수준(施肥水準)을 두어 토양(土壤)의 이화학성(理化學性)과 수량(收量)과의 관계(關係)에 대(對)하여 시험(試驗)한 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 작토(作土)의 점토(粘土) 함량(含量)을 같은 수준(水準)으로 조절(調節)할 경우 객토원(客土源)의 점토(粘土) 함량(含量)이 낮더라도 객토량(客土量)이 많아지면 감수심(減水深)이 줄어졌다. 객사(客士)는 토양중(土壤中) CEC 및 $SiO_2$의 함량(含量)을 증가(增加)시켰고, 화학성(化學性) 개량구(改良區)에서는 pH가 높아지고 Eh는 떨어지는 경향(傾向)이었다. 점토(粘土) 함량(含量)이 낮은 양질(壤質) 객토원(客土源)을 50~80ton/10a 객토(客土)할 경우 표준시비구(標準施肥區)에서는 약간 감수(減收)되었고 화학성(化學性) 개량(改良)은 2~4% 증수(增收)되었다. 반면(反面)에 우량객토원(優良客土源) 처리구(處理區)에서 표준시비구(標準施肥區)는 1~4%, 화학성(化學性) 개량구(改良區)는 3~8% 증수(增收)되었다.

우리나라 토양의 유효토심 결정시 저해인자에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Limiting Factor to Determine Available Soil Depth in Korea)

  • 유효토심은 작물의 선택, 시비, 토양관리 등에 중요한 역할을 하므로 우리니라 토양조사 결과 밝혀진 390개 토양통에 관한 토양단면기술과 물리화학성을 가지고 유효토심 결정시 고려해야 할 저해인자들에 대한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 유효토심 결정시 저해인자는 경반, 경사, 미숙, 분석, 사질, 석력, 암반, 염해, 저습, 중점, 특이산성, 화산회 토양과 저해인자가 없는 토양으로 구분하였다. 경반층이 저해인자인 토양통수는 5개, 경사 93, 미숙 29, 분석 5, 사질 42, 석력 47, 암반 19, 염해 8, 저습 22, 중점 32, 특이산성 3, 화산회 27개 토양통이었으 며, 저해인자가 없는 토양은 58개 토양통으로 구분되었다. 저해인자별로 평균 유효토심이 깊은 순서는 미숙 > 경사 > 화산회 > 중점 > 사질 > 석력 > 경반 > 분석 > 저습 > 암반 > 특이산성 > 염해 순인 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 저해인자를 가지고 있는 토양은 토지이용시 적절한 관리를 통하여 저해인자별로 개량함으로써 작물 뿌리를 충실하게 하여 생산성을 높일 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

동중국해 99MAP-P63 코어 퇴적물의 기원지 연구 (Provenance Study of 99MAP-P63 Core Sediments in the East China Sea)

  • 동중국해는 황하(Huanghe), 장강(Changjiang) 및 한국의 여러 강들로부터 많은 양의 퇴적물을 공급받는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 각 강들의 영향 및 퇴적과정을 밝혀내기 위해 많은 연구가 수행되었으나, 의견일치가 이루어지지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 동중국해 퇴적물의 기원지 및 퇴적 환경 유추를 위해, 99MAP-P63 코어 퇴적물에 대해 입도, 점토광물 및 희토류원소 분석을 수행하였다. 점토광물 분석 결과, 일라이트(illite)의 함량이 가장 높고, 카올리나이트(kaolinite) 및 녹니석(chlorite), 스멕타이트(smectite)의 순으로 풍부하며, 점토광물을 이용한 99MAP-P63 퇴적물의 기원지는 깊이에 관계없이 모두 장강인 것으로 판단된다. 희토류원소 분석 결과, 99MAP-P63 퇴적물들은 중국 강 퇴적물의 희토류원소 함량과 매우 유사하다. 따라서 99MAP-P63 퇴적물들의 기원지는 장강이며, 한국 강의 영향은 미미하거나 없을 것으로 판단된다. 99MAP-P63 퇴적물은 대체로 사질 실트로 구분되지만, 코어의 최상부는 모래의 함량이 85 %인 사질로 구분된다. 주변 코어들과 비교한 결과, 사질 실트는 해수면이 낮았던 저수위기(lowstand stage)에 해당되며, 장강의 고수로를 통해 퇴적물들이 직접 공급되었을 것으로 판단된다. 코어 최상부의 사질 퇴적물은 해침기(transgressive stage)에 해당되며 해수면 상승으로 인해 강 하구와의 거리는 멀어졌지만, 현재보다 높은 해저면의 응력으로 인해 조립질 퇴적물들이 공급될 수 있었으며, 인근에 퇴적되었던 고 장강(paleo-Changjiang) 퇴적물들이 재동된 것으로 해석된다.

Forest Floor Biomass, Litterfall and Physico-chemical Properties of Soil along the Anthropogenic Disturbance Regimes in Tropics of Chhattisgarh, India

  • The long term ecological effects have been reported in natural forest ecosystem due to various anthropogenic disturbances, especially in tropics of the world. The present study was carried out in the sanctuary area of central India to assess the changes on litter biomass, litterfall pattern and soil attributes under different disturbance regimes. The study area includes three forest circles i.e., Bhoramdeo, Jamunpani and Salehwara each comprising three disturbances regimes viz., high, medium and low severity of biotic pressure. A noticeable variation and impact were recorded in different sites. The impact varies significantly from least disturbed sites to highly disturbed sites across the circle and among different disturbances level. The seasonal mean total forest floor biomass across the forest circles varied from 2.18 to $3.30t\;ha^{-1}$. It was found highest under lightly disturbed site and lowest under heavily disturbed site. Total litterfall varied from 5.11 to $7.06t\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ across the forest circle. Lowest litterfall was recorded at heavily disturbed site while highest in lightly disturbed site. Annual turnover of litter varied from 69-73% and the turnover time ranged between 1.37-1.45 years. The turn over time was higher for heavily disturbed site and lower for lightly disturbed site. The heavily disturbed site of all the circle showed the sandy loam soil texture, whereas moderately and lightly disturbed site comprised of sandy loam, sandy clay loam and clay soil texture, respectively. The bulk density decreases from heavily disturbed site to lightly disturbed site and the pH of soils ranged from 5.57-6.89 across the circle. Across the circle the total soil nitrogen ranged from 0.12-0.21%, phosphorus from 10.03-24.00 kg and Potassium from $139.88-448.35kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Our results demonstrate that anthropogenic disturbances regime significantly influences forest floors in terms of mass, composition and dynamics along with litterfall rate and soil properties.
